Shane Ladner in court
You probably remember Shane Ladner, whose lies about a Purple Heart award put him and his wife on a float in Midland, Texas which collided with a train and cost his wife her leg. He was a Holly Springs, Georgia police officer at the time. When his lies were exposed by our friend Randy Travis at Fox 5 Atlanta, the police department fired him. That all happened nearly four years ago.
Ladner tried to sue Fox 5 and Randy last year for libel, and the case was tossed by the judge.
Now Ladner is facing criminal trial. Initially, Ladner claimed that he was awarded the Purple Heart for a wound he received in Panama during Operation Just Cause, but he was in high school during that operation, so he changed his story to drug interdiction operations in Central America, even though no one was awarded a Purple Heart during those missions.
He was in court yesterday, according to WSB-TV 2;
Shane Ladner faces theft by deception, false swearing and false statement charges from receiving free Purple Heart license plates for years.
Tuesday’s hearing was to determine what evidence can be used against him in the trial.
The state wants to include evidence of alleged tall tales that Ladner told to friends and family about being a sniper and army ranger involved in the Black Hawk Down battle in Somalia.
The commander of the drug interdiction operations in Honduras is testifying against Ladner;
Ladner’s attorney says he can prove his client was awarded a Purple Heart, but the general who was over Ladner says that can’t be the case because there was no combat.
“None of my people that were assigned to that base at my time as commander participated in any combat operations. It did not occur,” retired Gen. John Walsh said.

“Even Delta Force had to check in with me. There was no conceivable way that anybody could have been conducting any operation without my knowledge,” he said.

Oh, no, that’s not how it works.
What will happen is that when Ladner is convicted (or more likely when Ladner cops a plea because I can’t see taking this to trial since he will lose, and lose badly, unless the DA just wants to make an example of him) and admits to his lies the lawyer will say he was shocked – SHOCKED I SAY! – that Ladner lied to him.
Ladner seems determined to take this to his grave. I have no doubt that he’ll ride this out until he ends up in jail. I mean, he sued Fox5 knowing that he has no standing.

That’s a cheap attorney. I retained one a few weeks ago for a civil issue. $5,000.00 retainer, $450.00 an hour for office work, and $650.00 an hour for trial.
I can’t imagine his debt load right now.

tell ya what, If I were you, I most definitely would. I was called out for stolen valor not long ago after being seen in town wearing full dress (full medals). long story short, they filed a FOIA request through NPRC and my records came back incomplete. Granted, I’m still in and NPRC doesn’t have my most recent DD214s, but still. Make sure you cover your basis while you can. If you’re still active/reserve/guard/whatever, now is the time to ensure your record is correct before some asshat tries to call you out.

I have a few medals that aren’t on my DD214. they were authorized after I ETS’d. DD 214s can be incomplete. Sometimes you may not even know it.

He may never see jail, let alone prison, but he will be branded for life if he is convicted of one or more of the charges. Who would want to hire a man who is dishonest and deceitful? His atty’s saying that he will prove Ladner rec’d a PH can come only one way: by Ladner’s testifying, because there will be no source independent of Ladner for one to have been obtained. And if Ladner testifies, his goose will be cooked because he can then be subject, as any witness, to the tests for truthfulness and veracity. This house is falling down around Ladner. He’ll take a deal, if one is made available to him.
If GA is anything like here, he’ll never get hired as a meter maid. Seems when you get fired from a PD under similar circumstances, you get this really cool albatross to hang around your neck that follows everywhere you go that bars you from ever being LEO again.
Not to mention the fact that if any of the charges to which he pleads or is convicted is a felony, he is barred from legally possessing a firearm.
I also seem to remember that in GA, false swearing is in fact a felony. But it’s been a while since I looked that up, so I could be wrong.

False swearing is a felony in GA. And nobody but Shane can testify to the veracity of that made up DD214, so he will have to testify to it to prove its correct. I’m sure the prosecution has several people that can point out it’s inconsistencies.
As of April 20 Randy Travis reported that he was not testifying…..

If I were a Lawyer, I would check all my files to see if SHANE LADNER was named anywhere.
Every single conviction involving this asshole anywhere in the process is now subject to review for possible false claims or perjured testimony. How much do you suppose this is ultimately going to cost the taxpayers?
That was my immediate thought when all this broke. Some smart defense attorneys could file a legitimate appeal for their clients, but only if he is found guilty. That will definitely be a Pandora’s Box. An expensive one.
