Seems Like the Times That Try Men’s Souls….
Yesterday, I watched an idiotic video of a millennial trying to open a can of beans with a can opener. His entire class applauded when he completed that task. Since I knew how to do that when I was 5, this seems like a moron learning to do something that most of us take for granted. I really thought the squirrels around here are smarter.
But I realized, in watching that video, that those kids born between 1998 and 2018 have no clue on how to do anything, including feeding themselves. This is a golden opportunity to take a mind that is a blank sheet of paper and steer it in a more productive direction, isn’t it?
It’s my considered opinion that they are ripe for the plucking by those who like to corrupt people into doing stupid things. They are directionless, clueless, leaderless and nearly incompetent because they have been coddled their entire lives and will have to be on their own before long, if they aren’t already there.
Now is the time to grab those empty minds and get them on the track that will keep them from becoming the gullible prey of people like Gore and other corrupt political people. They have enough followers, as we’ve already seen.
These young people aren’t stupid. They are John Locke’s blank slates, ripe for corruption by the most corrupt people you can imagine. They can easily learn how to do something as simple as opening a can of beans. They are simply lost souls.
Note: My disclaimer is that the same generation of kids in my area are generally driven, ambitious, smart, bright, and hard working, and have specific goals for themselves.
But this generational naiveté is the reason that they’re falling for a strange political ideology called ‘climate change’ (used to be ‘global warming’). It’s the reason that Mao Tse-Tung, Pol Pot and other corrupt creatures were so successful. It’s the reason that Hitler’s Brown Shirts grew and the Jugend movement he wanted was so mindlessly enslaved to him. It’s the reason that the quack Trofim Lysenko was so quickly accepted by Stalin and made the head of Soviet agriculture, and millions of people starved in the USSR and China because of him.
The verbal attacks on climate skeptics and on political conservatives have some of the same characteristics as the Brown Shirt attacks on dissenters and other specific groups in Germany when Hitler was building his Reich. They also display that same kind of fanaticism that is evident in those films of Hitler giving speeches, where his Jugend followers look absolutely hypnotized by him.
Therein lies the real danger: when anyone is misled by turning a branch of science into a political base for a new belief system, a new ideology or a new religion, it is corruption at its most obvious and insidious level, and it depends on the naiveté and gullibility of the target audience.
The issue is how to stop it before it gets so bad that it turns into physical attacks. There is no easy answer to that.
This happened in Europe during the rise of the Roman church, which became the Roman Catholic church and gave authority to the Inquisition to destroy people who disagreed with its demands. You caved or you died.
Therein lies the mistake made by these power-hungry, money-grubbing con artists: this isn’t Europe in the 9th century. This isn’t the Soviet Union under Stalin and it isn’t Mussolini’s Italy (which didn’t last very long), nor is it Hitler’s Reichstag or Mao’s Red China, and it certainly isn’t the Dork From Nork’s Hermit Country. There is not and never has been a dynastic class in this country, no matter how much money those infamous robber barons of the 19th century made and no matter how much the MSM want it now. They and their families have faded away to a few straggling remainders. The foundations are slowly disappearing. In my view, that is all the losing end of what was once a sweeping grab of power in the European manner, and the world no longer works that way.
We are not peasants with no minds of our own, and those millennials who seem so laughably inept aren’t quite the mindless drones they seem to be, either.
If you were around back in 1960, you may recall Jack Kennedy’s simple message in his inauguration speech: ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. This is a message they haven’t heard just yet. It needs to be thrown at them now, today.
Instead of letting them be fruit loops, point them in the direction of being productive, having something to show for the time they spend, and always clean up after themselves. That’s a skill set they seem to have missed.
In spite of what you may think, while the military can be a harsh mistress, it can also get lost souls to straighten up if it’s done in a rigid enough manner. I read up on the history of Women Marines. It seems that the USMC women’s boot camp in 1967 was far harsher and more tight-assed than anything I saw at RTC(W) Bainbridge, right up to Carter’s interference in the world, and a lot harsher than it is today. But it certainly did build those women into cohesive units.
And if you will recall, during the Depression, the Roosevelt administration started work programs like the WPA, PWA, and CCC to get people back to work. My understanding of the CCC is that it was run like a military program. What a way to prepare people to defend their country!
Maybe this is what we need now – something that puts this clueless, directionless, leaderless group to work, gives them a purpose, and gets them to stop throwing temper tantrums at the Sky Gods.
There is, of course, an alternative, which is that we send them all to Dave Hardin’s house for pre-bootcamp indoctrination before they’re shipped off to Parris Island.
Just an idea I thought I’d throw at you all.

I’ll just leave this here…..

Gee whiz Ex-PH2, was it the video I shared yesterday? And I couldn’t tell if the Millenial Snowflake with the can opener was a boy or a girl, I ass-u-me’d it was a girl. You’re right on the money though, ignorance is a weapon utilized by tyrants, look at how the likes of Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Castro, Ho Chi Minh and Pol Pot used uneducated and clueless “Useful Idiots” to achieve their agenda and IMHO that’s why the political left wants as many clueless useful idiots as they can cultivate!
API, you ass-u-me’d correctly.
If not, the can opener kid needs to be slapped about the head and shoulders for wearing maroon colored fingernail polish and sporting a man-bun.
He (the kid) is in training to become a modern metrosexual, if it was a male in the video.
Here is some info about Fidel. The reason Batista hated his wife was because she slept on a “Castro” for you younger Vets out there, There was a bed that pulled out of a couch which was called a Castro Convertible.
Ok. Do we have to ask?
Link please for the can opener test of glory.
Here it is. SO FUCKING SAD
If we don’t do something, they’re gonna starve. Not every store has Ho-Hos and Hostess cupcakes. If you give one of them a box of cornbread mix, they will probably try to eat it with a spoon.
DARWIN AKHBAR!!!
I had a feeling from the cuts that it was taken out of context. A quick perusal of the comments and lo and behold: https://www.snopes.com/woman-struggles-to-open-can-of-spaghetti-os/
TL;DR: “The Spaghetti-Os video was misleadingly edited to suggest that millennials (perhaps routinely) struggle with mundane tasks such as using can openers, doing so for large assembled crowds to copious plaudits. But the shortened video was in fact a widely-known (and mocked) March 2010 performance art piece and was not intended to be a genuine depiction of the millennial incompetence. The complete performance went viral in its own right in 2010 and was jeered as an art form that many onlines felt was pretentious and pointless, but the clip did not depict a young woman struggling to open a can of food because she lacked the basic skills to do so.”
Yes, but is there any other depiction of millennial incompetence? Why, there seem to be many of them.
It seems that Snopes can’t tell the difference between male and female people, either.
If there’s such a plethora to pick from, why pick one that’s not true? This only undermines your argument.
The real explanation is actually worse: “Interior Semiotics is a video depicting an art student’s performance, in which she opens a can of expired Spaghetti-Os, rubs them on her shirt, and proceeds to finger herself while urinating in a can. The video also depicts a large number of stereotypically hipster-looking audience members and their enthusiastic response to the performance. Consequently, the video became popular for exemplifying the ridiculousness of hipster culture and for personifying the stereotypes of the culturally-imagined hipster phenomenon of the late 2000s and early 2010s.”
I kinda wanna watch the full version now…
😄💧
Meh, Snopes …
Thanks for pointing this out, “Some Guy”.
My rule of thumb for any info I receive be it from the net, news, or a guy at the bar is that if just so perfectly matches my biases, then I check it out. As human beings we are subject to conformation bias.
That kid looks like Bradley’s younger brother/sister/whatsit.
What is really frightening is that this is the generation that is going to be running our country in 30 to 40 years. Glad our generation won’t be around to see it. Looks like “Idiocracy” (the movie) is just around the corner.
Not so fast, there rgr769. There is a generation ahead of them that is the precise opposite, and we see them being brought up for doing good stuff all the time. They are the examples these overgrown children should follow, and (I hope) will follow.
I hope you are right. But most young people have their personalities and values fully formed by the time they are in their early 20’s. When you consider the current millennial generation thinks its cool to smoke dope daily, I am not as hopeful as you are. Also, keep in mind they have been brainwashed with proggie values and false narratives since kindergarten. You might also want to consider that less than 1% of the present population under 50 has served or is serving in the military, where there is a dose of reality.
My job as a high school teacher makes me think of Idiocracy all the time. We’re headed there.
Honestly, most of the time, I just find myself praying that my two beautiful children (toddler and infant) don’t end up as idiotic and pointless as the teenagers I deal with constantly.
You, unfortunately, likely have your finger on the pulse of our yutes, and what you see daily does not likely bode well for the future.
The look on their faces, during this exercise, was priceless! It’s the kind of look that you expect people, having learned a new skill but don’t know if they’ve quite mastered it, watching one of their own struggle to accomplish said task.
Except, it was the use of a can opener. You could tell by how the individual was struggling that this wasn’t something they did on a regular basis, that this was something that was just learned.
whoever taught them this proably wasn’t comfortable with this task either, and forget to provide safety procedures, like having a butter knife or something similar to “lift” the newly freed lid up.
…Or this is a spoof and the joke is on us! 🙄
the latter is the case.
Good grief we got it, we got it. Are you the internet accuracy police or what?
No, the purpose of the exercise was “art.” The very disgusting description of what the “artist” did with the contents of the can and the emptied can is in my 4:14 cmt. There was no artsy allusion regarding her inability to use a can opener. That. evidently, was real.
We may disagree with the “art”, but like writing, there’s decent, average, and BS. Look at Dennis Howard Chevalier’s blog, that’s “writing”, despite the fact that we’ve pulverized his commentary and arguments from that blog.
So yes, the later, the joke is on us.
Given what she was about to do, and the psychology related to that, I’m not surprised that she’d appear to struggle with the can opener; however, the full video shows parts where she demonstrated a level of comfort of operating the can opener. She admitted to eating a lot of that stuff as a kid.
The actual version paints a different picture than the original one linked to here; hence the original being the spoof, and the joke being on us.
I have to say this: It looks very similar to a monkey trying to fuck a football.
USMC Steve,
I’m adding this to the Wall of Insults®™ for our phonies.
(Edited to fit the WOI)
” If this wasn’t so sad, it would be as funny as watching a monkey try to fuck a football”
BWHAHAHAHAHAHA We say that here in the office all the time! Glad to see it being incorporated, thanks USMC Steve and ChipNASA.
We have three millennial types working on our team at the moment, hence I really do feel kind of Dino-like. These young’uns are smart, but we had to show them how to jump start a car.
The other thing seems to be that a couple of them were waiting for permission to be smart…these people are an Industrial Hygienist, Radio-Chemist and a Biochemist (as opposed to my biologist self). They came to me one day, and asked if it was ok to do something. A bit startled, I said, whats the boss going to do to you “Shave your head and send you to Viet Nam?” (That went over their heads by the way)
The response was; we can do this? Yep ya can, if you need someone to take any heat send them my way.
Turns out one of them was thinking about quitting, this made all the difference to her.
My Pa, LtCol D, used monkey fucking a football on a regular basis. In polite company, it became a simian prodding the pigskin. Other favorites were fanfuckingtastic, outfuckingstanding, infuckingcredible, you get the gist. A master of artful profanity on the scale of the father in “A Christmas Story”. And you’re right about the millennial bunch, somewhere incentive and looking for a better way to accomplish a job got lost.
I can only imagine what the end result would have been if the “can opener” would have been a P38.
It would have suicided.
I have to add to my skills as a 5-year-old that because my mother had the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook, with the buffalo plaid red & white cover, I was also making spice cake, brownies and all kinds of cookies, and that was supposed to be for dessert, right? But no!
My sister found what I made, and ate all of it, every time, and there was nothing for dessert. She weighed 180 lbs by the time she left 8th grade. So I quit cooking until she left for graduate school.
I have the cookbook, with my mother’s and grandmother’s notes in the margins.
So all these kids were misunderstanding their feelings of being ‘triggered’….they were all really just hangry
What DOESN’T trigger today’s snowflake millenials? That Millenial girl was struggling to open that can like an Ethiopian trying to swallow a grain of rice and if that was “Performance Art” then IMHO that shit’s pretty pathetic. I’ve heard that even addressing those mental midgets with the term “snowflake” triggers them, so SNOWFLAKES, SNOWFLAKES, SNOWFLAKES!!!
Waiting for someone to say the term snowflake is “racist”
Some guy will do that, as soon as he gets done trying to open a can of beans, for supper.
Vegan beans, no animal fat used in processing.
Lard is a food group.
Too late. Someone already (falsely) did exactly that by claiming it was a a Nazi term and a reference to the Holocaust.
http://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=74780
The title of this post is sexist 😉
Tough bananas, SFC.
You know I love ya, Ex!
In Florida, A snowflake is a snowbird that comes down to Florida during the off season as well as the snowbird, winter season on multiple visits.
I watched my whole VFW post triggered by a few millionaire’s kneeling for the national anthem.
Hell, they were so triggered that they banned the NFL from my post so they didn’t dare have to see something that was offensive to them.
Then they all went back to the bar and bitched about “Millennials” and “Snowflakes” being too damn sensitive now days. LOL
Protesting for some cause du jour is one thing, but intentionally disrespecting our Flag and National Anthem to do so is another, thus I said TO HELL WITH THE NFL along with many others.
I can see why. Shitting all over your national symbol, and thus by extension shitting all over your country for cheap publicity, is pretty crappy behavior. It also serves no useful purpose other than to eventually make you poor.
This is the same generation that thinks eating Tide pods is a good idea.
You’re onto something here….
RTC Bainbridge…as in Bainbridge Island, Wa?
No, Bainbridge, MD.
That’s what I thought too, Atkron, I think Bainbridge Island used to have an old Coast Artillery fort or battery there. Wouldn’t have surprised me that there was a naval training base or other naval station on the island at all.
Funny how military stuff pops up all over Washington. One of the buildings at the Seattle Center used to be the riding/drill hall for the horse cavalry units of the Washington National Guard back in the 20’s, 30’s early 40’s if I remember right. There were two art deco eagles flanking the main entrance. Not sure if the building is still there. Magnuson Park used to be Sandpoint Naval Air Station, started out as a flying boat base and operated through the early to mid-70’s. How could I have forgotten that most of Fort Lawton is now called Discovery Park?
And now for something completely different:
Today is National Winnie the Pooh Day.
Enjoy!!
What do Winnie the Pooh and Vlad the Impaler have in common?
Their middle name.
“Oh bother!” said Vlad as he sharpened another stake….
Vlad was the original hemmoroid remover.

Prolonged Adolescence has evolved during my lifetime. Korea veterans were expected to be out of the house and feeding themselves by 18.
The drinking age was 18 when I was at that moment in time. Wolfman Jack ushered in voting at 18. I had my permit to drive for 1 day, got my licence the next day at 15 and a half.
High School parking lot had many student trucks with shotguns in the back window, we often went hunting before and after school.
Started working in the Mill at 15 (lied and said I was 16). I turned 18 in boot camp. Paid my first Stripper not long there after. (Buck toothed broad that could eat an apple through a picket fence).
Ah, the good ole days…when Marines were expected to get shit faced and laid before they charged a Machine Gun.
I held every rank from Pvt through Sgt…at least twice. Still had an NJP as a SNCO. The Corps didn’t always like it when I encouraged someone to self copulate.
Young people today are mostly a protuberance on my gluteus maximus. Except the Strippers who don’t mind making money the old fashioned way…they still work it.
They sorely need your guidance and your wisdom, Dave Hardin.
Put a sign out front that reads “Helpful Hints Here”. They will flock to you in droves and sit staring you, open-mouthed, while you show them how to light a match on the side of the matchbox.
Imagine their rapt attention, amazement or fear, if he showed them how to light a match on the leg of his blue jeans?
He’d do it on his pants zipper.
You guys could post a spew alert, y’know. Just for pity’s sake.
There’s also the lost art of opening a beer with a seat belt buckle
Belt buckle, pocket knife, flathead screwdriver, tire iron, I can use them and many other objects to open a longneck bottle, one of many reasons my Dad refers to me as a “Third Degree Redneck”
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Millennials are going to be one of the most Conservative generations in US history. Their politics are Libertarian having grown up with failed drug and fiscal policies, NSA domestic spying and the coddling in their upbringing. They’ve tasted freedom after leaving their homes, the hardest lesson learned is the one you can not anticipate. They’ve seen the flagrant cultural editing by Facebook and google, they are PISSED.
Not all, but enough and I’d say most.
This is performance art. You see a lot of this poking fun at forced normalization/ineptitude in the memes. If you speak the language of this dada-esque art you’d see it.
If I’m wrong, I’ll admit it. But look at the rise of Milo, Ben Sapiro, Steve Crowder, Republican groups on campuses.
This IS happening, they want to break the machine and with their numbers, they can.
You could be right.
I took it at face value the first time I saw it, because of the way the kid with the bun fumbled setting up the can opener in the first place.
If it’s a joke or performance art, with intentional clutzky behavior, it fooled me, the way truly good satire will fool most of us until we realize what really happened.
I couldn’t agree more Roh.
I work in finance (Merrill Lynch) which, granted is a conservative field, and the Younger men and women I work with who are coming out of college have a pretty well honed B.S. Meter. I guess growing up being able to search the internet for facts instead of just having to believe what you’re told helps.
Most hated Hillary and tolerated Trump enough to vote for him.
Once again, this is my personal experiences in my small area of life.
I do some work as a security guard for extra cash. The millennials they hire always show up late and sometimes don’t show up at all without even calling in to let us know they’re not coming. No is firing them for this behavior either.
They feel so entitled to the best positions too. After a year they all are lining up to be a supervisor. One guy I met years ago who was a complete screw up got a job as an account manager where I work recently. The other day him and 10 other people working there all got fired. I have no idea what they did but it was very, very bad. Right now they have another millennial acting as the temporary account manager and this guy could hardly tie his shoes.
Thank goodness we have Velcro, huh?
I firmly believe Velcro shoes started the whole dumbing down process. No one under the age of 70 should be allowed Velcro shoes.
Hey, I like Velcro shoe closures; but I am over 70 and lazy.
You’ve earned yours, enjoy!
My wife for a big Blue box store for about 8 years. They had the problem you describe.
The millenials would apply, maybe 8 or 10 get hired, bitch and moan after the first day, because they had to work so hard. Half would be gone the next day.
Then half of the half left would quit 3 or 4 hours into their Friday shift, because they didn’t want to work on the weekend, and, they hadn’t been promoted yet to assistant store manager. So those remaining would take the weekend off, because……..
By Sunday, all but maybe 1 of the group that had been hired would remain, the rest having been fired for not showing up.
“My wife worked”. Duh, not enough coffee today.
On the upside, if your kids/grandkids know how to put in a day’s work for a day’s pay, plus some – employers fall all over themselves to keep them – and beg them to come back whenever they move on.
Talk about an “unfair advantage”…::snerk::
It’s sometimes strange how unintended consequences can work in both good and bad ways. One of the things I’ve been interested in is the craft of photojournalism, particularly black and white work done prior to the failures of large newsweekly magazines such as Life and Look in the 1970s.
While wandering around through the available online photo archives, I’ve also often been struck by the quality of the depression-era images done on behalf of the Roosevelt-created Farm Security Administration. This includes photography by people such as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and others. While critics who have said the FSA was socialist and a pork barrel might have had a point, it’s also true the work of Lange and the others is remarkable. The historical record would be poorer without it.
It also makes you wonder what the record will show for the generation of millennials. Selfies?
I’ve watched the video in question, at the time of viewing I was hoping it was some sort of performance art.
Surely they couldn’t be that stupid, right?
They are. And don’t call me Shirley.
Sorry, I have a drinking problem.
Do you like movies about gladiators?
Have you ever seen a grown man naked?
FWIW, our grandkids already know how to work and work hard, those who are old enough know how to shoot, how to take care of themselves in the woods, how to think for themselves, how to raise a garden or bait a hook…
In other words: our kids are raising survivors.
There may be a large number of non-survivors our there, but time and natural selection may help us out some.
Yep. The parenting aspect matters. Tolerate a male child acting like a pussy and that’s what you get. I recently pointed out to no one in particular that TV commercials rarely depict actual men under 35. They’re all a bunch of pansies, with a two-day old beard. If they’re over 35, they’re depicted as just stupid, gay, or both.
Looked at the Disney shows lately?
If “Dad” exists in the show at all, he’s a bumbling idiot/clown. “Brother” is usually a brat. “Daughter/Heroine” is smarter than all the males combined – and somehow stronger as well.
For the longest time the only channel worth watching in my brother’s nursing home was Disney – but he finally found some channel that plays 1940’s & 1950’s movies.
2/17, don’t forget those under 35 have a two day-old beard and a man bun. Standard equipment nowadays.
“If they’re over 35, they’re depicted as just stupid, gay, or both.”
And that shit gets real old, real fast.
Part of the gender bias relates to demographics. According to marketers, women make a clear majority of purchasing decisions, particularly in the category of non-durable goods. There was also a sea change starting a few years ago. At some point, advertising shifted from pitching the benefit of a product to instead making more of an effort to win the loyalty of a targeted group. Whether the actual product is any good or not is almost irrelevant.
It’s all bullshit. Few things are more dangerous now than a market-droid with a bright idea. They’re like cats constantly on the hunt for the next shiny object. Remember QR codes?
Loyalty of a targeted group – isn’t that what the auto corporations like GM and Ford did until Detroit’s auto industry pretty much imploded?
Remember this one?
See the USA in your Chevrolet. America is asking you to call.
There’s a Ford in your future.
If you haven’t looked at Ford lately, look again.
Built Ford tough.
And who can forget the ads for the pony car?
Cobra bites man.
It has a checkered future.
Brand loyalty has always been a big deal in the advertising business.
Ex, automobiles aren’t a good example because they aren’t a non-durable good. The kind of advertising I’m talking about relates to products you might see coming from companies such as Procter & Gamble or Kellogg’s. Tide Pods or Fruit Loops. Marketers are no longer all that interested in establishing loyalty to a specific brand because it’s a superior product. Instead, largely because of current social media, they want you to have a “relationship” with the product. Follow #tidepodlove on Twitter, say, or watch the Fruit Loops channel on YouTube.
Automobile advertising has its own set of problems, one of which is also demographic related but in a different way. Walk into any dealership in the country, and they will probably tell you the largest group of non-fleet new vehicle purchasers tend to be age 55+ and male. However, if you look at advertising done for cars now it’s almost always pitching to a different age and gender cohort. One of the comments I remember from not long ago is that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to try to sell new cars to Millennials if they don’t have any money.
I don’t have a TV. No wonder I am completely out of the loop now. Poor old me.
I’m going to sit in my rocker with an old Sears & Roebucks catalog and pout.
That ‘relationship’ thing will probably fade away at some point, but I do get the message. Marshall McCluhan was quite perceptive when he said in the 1960s ‘the medium is the message’, which must be true more now than ever.
And selfies? 15 minutes of fame – Andy Warhol.
I think I’ll stay out of the loop.
Good stuff, Perry, both your comments.
I remember sitting in an advertising/salesmanship class in my vocational high school, and the teacher calmly informing us that “Sex sells.”
Put another way, the marketing department is looking for a way to make us think that purchasing their product increases our attractiveness to folks we want to please.
Once folks understand the trick is a trick, it becomes much less effective.
“She thought everything was fine, until THIS happened!”
‘Someone asked the other day, ‘What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?’ ‘We didn’t have fast food when I was growing up,’ I informed him. ‘All the food was slow.’ ‘C’mon, seriously. Where did you eat?’ ‘It was a place called ‘at home,” I explained! ‘Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn’t like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.’ By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn’t tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it : Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levis, never set foot on a golf course, never traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died. My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow) We didn’t have a television in our house until I was 19. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a..m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people. I was 21 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called ‘pizza pie.’ When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against… Read more »
Check, check, check, all of the above.
Milk was delivered to our house by a horse-drawn wagon from the dairy. The horse was a Belgian mare. The horses disappeared when stores started stocking milk in waxed cardboard cartons.
You had to use a match to light the burners on the stove.
The washer was Maytag and my sister was the only one of us allowed to use the wringer because we were “too small”.
The guy who bought my car is a Packard fan. He has several.

Hopalong Cassidy, Fury, Lone Ranger, Sky King, Blue Angels, Maverick, Cheyenne, Sugarfoot, The Alaskans, Yancy Derringer, Sea Hunt, The Big Picture, Hennessy, 77th Bengal Lancers, Mickey Mouse Club, Spin & Marty, Betty Boop, Popeye, The Ed Sullivan Show (originally Toast of the Town), Gunsmoke, Have Gun – Will Travel, Rawhide, Lawman, SGT Preston of the Northwest Mounted Police, Rin Tin Tin, My Friend Flicka, DuPont Theater, GE Theater, The 3rd Man.
Life seems so much simpler but it was a lot more work. We had a garden, raised just about everything and canned or froze everything we raised. Never a dull or non-busy moment.
I have a Hopalong Cassidy pocket knife, do I get bonus points?
I’m 55, scored a 22 on your test. I’m very proud of my score!
P.F. Flyers was the only one I had to look up. It might be a regional thing. In my own neck of the woods, the go-to sneakers were either Converse All-Stars, or those navy blue Keds boat shoes that were good for hangin’ ten on your gnarly Hobie skateboard…
Age 50 and I scored 21!
That was a breeze for an old geezer like me.
Hey, “Breeze and Geeze”. That Sings!!

0230 hrs trip to the bathroom for #2 involves a flashlight and the Spiegel catalog.
I’m 30 and I got a 1. My mother was stationed at Rota when I was a kid, and going to the drive-in was fun. Sometimes, when we did our boy scout camping trips on the base, we’d sneak to the southern part of the camping area and watch movies via binoculars and a handheld radio.
I’d support extra points for knowing there were two kinds of drive-in. One was where you went to watch movies. The other was a kind of restaurant where you parked your car and a waitress would come out to take your order for, say, a cheeseburger and a milkshake…
I’ve been to Sonic. Does this mean I get a 2?
Only if the Sonic waitress had the job title of “car hop” and only if she came out to the car on roller skates…
I scored the full 25, but mostly it’s stuff I remember from when I was 6 to 12 years old.
We’ve heard this all before.
(Disclaimer, I’m Gen X. Graduated HS in 1992)
The kids who fought the first world war, well, all they cared about was hot rods, speakeasies, and partying.
The boomers only cared about sex, drugs and rock and roll.
Gen X were slackers who were nihilistic and didn’t care about anything at all.
These Millennials are very different people. But judging them on this video is like judging the Boomers on a a video of hippies freaking out at Woodstock or taking over the deans office.
So far Millennials have a lower drug use than any generation in 40 years. Lower teen pregnancy rate, lower tobacco use than any generation in 60 years. And they have fought our nation’s longest war without us needing to draft. Any Millennial joining the service after 2002 pretty much knew they were going to war, yet they joined anyway.
They volunteer at a higher rate than previous generations. And most came of age watching the largest recession since the 30’s. That leaves a mark.
Yes, they are very different. They have been exposed to more information at a young age than any other gen in human history.
On a personal level, I find them very kind, open minded and tolerant. They younger guys I work with (25 and under) Are just of mixed bag as my generation. Some very hard workers, some medium hard workers and the 10% that just suck, like every generation.
Don’t let the bad press fool you. Just like the bad press for every generation. They are good kids who are in the middle of a social upheaval (the internet, smart phones ect) And they lean to the left now, but so did my generation and now we are starting to lean right.
“Same as it ever was.. same as it ever was…”
Here here. Class of ‘98 and at college now.
One of the things that gets me about the teens/early 20’s kids I run into is their nostalgia for the late ‘90s…
I have to remind myself constantly that they’ve never seen a truly great American economy and culture, without war.
It’s kind of like 90s kids reverence for the 70s, thunder rock, big muscle cars, dazed and confused.
Same as it ever was.
Well put, Roh.
Ex-PH2:
I usually agree with EVERYTHING you say, as you and I are pretty much on the same sheet of music on everything, HOWEVER
your attack on the “Roman” Church was a bit off beat. I know it was part of your other wise excellent monologue, however I am many things that I would die for, however first and foremost is my Catholic faith.
Second is my 2A values.
I just felt I needed to say that.

Perhaps I misunderstood your comments; if so I am deeply sorry.
Understood, but I was referencing the part of history of the early Church, which engaged in extortionate practices such as the Inquisition to get people to convert to Christianity/Catholicism. The head of the Church also approved the persecution of Jewish people, so it ws either cave in and agree, or face torture and death. That was the EARLY church, after Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire.
Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary), a devout Catholic, insisted upon restoring Rome as the ruling body of England after Henry VIII died.
She ordered the executions by fire of the people who had translated the Bible into English under Henry VIII’s orders, when HE broke away from Rome and established the Church of England.
“early”…. interesting description of ‘several centuries old’. Most of what you described occurred a thousand years or more after the founding of the Church.
Having seen the whole video, that is an edit. It was a ‘performance art’ thing, where after she got the can open (it was filled with black goo of some sort), she took off her clothes and smeared herself with it while going on about whatever the hell she was ranting about.
Still, the can opener kicked her ass pretty hard…
I’ just glad to hear that was actually a flat chested female instead of a “transgender” whatsit.
