Weekend Open Thread

| February 4, 2022

There is a repeated pattern in history, most recently in the 20th Century history. The people are disarmed, then the government ends up using the government’s guns to exert their way on the population. Many people end up dying in the hands of their government. Yet, the side of the argument that is usually not well versed in history advocate taking more types of guns away. Enjoy your weekend.

Had to do some escort duty for Lady Friend into the little Big Town and was off the net. Proud that you are offering rations, libations, and hand rolled seegars. Some of the Claimants are kinda chintzy in that respect *cough Chip *cough*. Can’t even get some Hardtack and beans out of him.

Birthday Greetings to the ones that completed another turn around Ol’ Sol. I’ll take Black Walnut Caramel Ice Cream with my cake.

Having lost the coveted FIRST to Roh-Dog, I hereby offer another weekly column of trivia. Enjoy!

DID YOU KNOW…?
For whom is the world’s tallest mountain named?
By Jack Bagley
didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com

Ah, February. The second month of the year. The month in which we recognize love and politics.
Love, of course, is recognized in the annual rituals associated with Valentine’s Day, on the 14th.
Politics rears its ugly head in the recognition of President’s Day, which this year falls on the 21st. President’s Day, of course, is a combination of two former holidays – Lincoln’s Birthday on the 12th, and Washington’s Birthday on the 22nd. It tosses in a nod to the other 43 people who’ve held the office.
One thing we don’t have to wait to celebrate in February, of course, is trivia, since we do that here every week. In fact, let’s celebrate some trivia right now.

Commissioner Wretched

Did you know …
… the popular snack “nachos” were named after a person called Nacho? In 1940, Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya (1895-1975) created the dish at the Victory Club in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, just over the border from Eagle Pass, Texas. Asked by a regular customer to bring a different snack than the usual, Anaya used triangularly-cut pieces of freshly fried corn tortillas and added melted cheese and jalapeño peppers. Asked what the delicious dish was called, Anaya said, “I guess we can just call them Nacho’s Special.” The popularity of the dish enabled Anaya to open his own restaurant in 1954. (And the snack-loving people of the world are joyous that he invented them!)
… the term for a group of giraffes is a “tower”? A typical tower of giraffes is made up of about ten to twenty individual animals. (If you’re wondering whether giraffes get angry about being stared at by humans, they don’t. They just overlook it.)

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

“Whose cheese is this?”
“Nacho cheese, get yer mitts off.”

Frankie Cee

“Giraffes, Towers, Overlook”, This is Rich! I’ll build that to a Meme.

Frankie Cee

Giraffe Tower.jpg
Commissioner Wretched

Love it!!! I am honored. I’ve acquired it for my own collection.

Commissioner Wretched

… a Japanese company has created a fire alarm for people who cannot hear? In 2008, the Japanese perfume company Seems developed a smoke detector that releases the pungent odor of wasabi, Japanese horseradish, into the air if it detects smoke. The odor wakes people up who otherwise would not hear an audible smoke alarm. (They use “hot stuff” to awaken you to the real hot stuff.)
… ounce for ounce, movie popcorn costs more than filet mignon steak? (But which one is better for you?)
… an oak forest in Sweden exists because of the country’s navy? In the 1830s, the Swedish government planted a forest of oak trees so that the wood could be harvested to build ships for the navy. However, before any of the wood was taken, metals were developed that could be used, and the forest stands today uncut. (And grateful, I’m sure.)

Commissioner Wretched

… the man for whom the tallest mountain on Earth is named was opposed to the idea? Sir George Everest (1790-1866) never actually saw the mountain that now bears his name. But he was active in the work of carrying out accurate measurements of the landforms of the Indian subcontinent, and when the determination of the tallest mountain was made, it was recommended that it be named after Everest. Sir George himself was opposed to the idea, however, saying that his name could not be translated into Hindi – the language spoken by people in the area of the mountain – nor could it properly be pronounced by them. Additional trivia note: We also have an apparent pronunciation problem with Everest’s name. During his lifetime he pronounced it “EE-ver-est.”

ninja

CW: Your trivia on Mount Everest reminds me of the time when HRC and WJC (you know who they are) told the story that Ole Hillary was named after Sir Edmund Hillary, the conqueror of Mount Everest.

Only thing is that Sir Edmund became famous only after climbing Everest in 1953. HRC was born in 1947.

Sheesh, Some People….

ninja

Oh, I forgot..Didn’t Ole WJC state “I did not have sex with that woman?”
*grin*

SFC D

He also didn’t inhale

Hondo

I believe he did when he smoked cigars . . . .

Commissioner Wretched

… an astronomer wanted to put a song by the Beatles on the Voyager “Sounds From Earth” disc? When Voyager 1 was being prepared for launch in 1977, Dr. Carl Sagan (1934-1996) wanted to include the Beatles’ hit song, “Here Comes the Sun.” Dr. Sagan said the song, to him, portrayed the diversity of life and culture on Earth. While the members of the group were in favor, their record label, EMI, refused to release the rights to the song. Voyager 1 went into space and out of the solar system without a Beatles hit on it. (Hard to collect royalties from aliens, you know.)
… the average person has more than 1,460 dreams a year? (How many nightmares do they have, I wonder?)
… about 72% of Americans sign their pets’ names to greeting cards they send out? (I don’t. I don’t send greeting cards. I’m a cheap old so-and-so.)

ninja

“….about 72% of Americans sign their pets’ names to greeting cards they send out?”

Yep.

Even though we do not have pets anymore, we DID put our pet’s names on SOME cards we send out (not Christmas)…and our Munchkins now put their pet’s names on cards they send to us.

Hey…Pets are family!

Mason

EMI wouldn’t release the rights to a put a song on an album that literally nobody would ever hear? That sounds about right for a record company.

Commissioner Wretched

… the first safety feature for an automobile was invented in 1908? John O’Leary (1855-1924) invented what was called the “O’Leary fender,” which was basically a large net installed on the car’s front fender, which was designed to “scoop pedestrians out of the way before they can be run over.” (If you think the description is amusing, you should see a photo of it.)
… most of human history is forever lost? According to scientists, modern humans first appeared on Earth about 200,000 years ago. However, record keeping in the form of oral or written traditions did not start until 6,000 years ago. So 194,000 years of human history is lost. (Knowing humans as I do, that is probably for the best.)

Mason

O’Leary Fender.

From another site,

The feature: pedestrian cow-catcher

The company: O’Leary Fender Company (1908)

The fail: New Yorker John O’Leary had a simple solution to pedestrian traffic accidents: install on the front of cars a mesh cradle or “fender” that would spring forward and safely scoop up a pedestrian when the vehicle struck him. People didn’t buy it not because it was crazy, but because it didn’t look good on a car. Other inventors pursued similar, better-looking devices into the 1920s.

… Ph.D. graduates in Finland get more than just a diploma when they graduate? If you go to a school in Finland and earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree, you are also awarded with a top hat and a sword. The sword, complete with scabbard, is the officially certified civilian sword of the Republic of Finland, and can be fitted with a golden university emblem. (The sharpest graduates get the sharpest gifts, eh?)
…you could be a sufferer of pteronophobia? If you’re wondering, pteronophobia is the fear of being tickled by feathers. (For some reason, this item just tickles me!)
Now … you know!

I have been waiting all week for this….

North Dakota woman arrested, faces six years in jail for ‘slapping sheriff’s deputy on the bum’

  • On Friday night, Sandra D. Kobs-Sabo was at the Crossroads Tavern in Bismarck when she ‘jogged’ over to a cop as he was conducting bar check
  • The 50-year-old said she has ‘a thing for a man in uniform’ and was arrested at the scene, facing up to six years in jail for ‘slapping sheriff’s deputy on the bum’

Kobs-Sabo’s advances did not end there, however, as she continued to catcall the deputy, calling him a ‘sexy cop’ even after she was taken into custody.
While en route to Burleigh Morton Detention Center, she also asked the officer multiple times if he was married while emphasizing the fact that she ‘loves a man in uniform.’

Here’s her picture from her younger days:

Sandra Kobs-Sabo.jpg

My LEO (Ret.) brother says their name for folks like Kobs-Sabo is “bar flys” and his response is usually “shoo-fly”.

That’s right. TAH is not your personal erotica site. However, it was IDC SARC’s personal erotica site….

NDHoosier

I haven’t seen IDC SARC in quite awhile, which is why I used the past tense.

For any FNGs out there, often when a picture of a (semi-)attractive woman was posted in a TAH thread, IDC SARC would respond with “I’d hit that.”

Perhaps an Admin will see his e-mail address and hit him with a “Welfare Check”… Just sayin’.

At around 0900 Hrs this morning, I lit off the PC and watch which was shut down all week due to a swollen big toe and foot either due to gout or when I may have bent it a little too much while getting up from the carpet and not wearing my sneakers. Toe was red on one side when I woke up last Saturday morning so Sis asks me if I have gout and I said I didn’t know. Saturday night I start running a fever which according to Doc Sis reading from her 10 inch thick medical book, a swollen foot/toe where the big toe is sensitive to the touch is an indication of gout so to make a short story long as usual, I went to the foot Doc and after taking the xrays, he asks me if I have a history of gout and I tell him no. Gives me a steriod 6 day pack. Fever doesn’t go with a swollen foot from a bent toe/toes so I did research and I could have been gout so I’ll watch what I eat. I was in the recliner all week and forwarded Mason the MIl stuff for TAH from my cell phone. My water pills are on the list.

Yay! CPL was just given his second federal felony conviction in NYC by the jury. He was found guilty of wire fraud, forgery and embezzlement of Clifford’s $300k in book advance payments. The documents, including his text messages, made his defense impossible. He forged her signature on a letter authorizing the payment money to go directly to a bank account he controlled. In Commiefornia, that alone would get him disbarred.

He still faces two more federal jury trials in LA. The documents and his clients’ testimony on those cases will kill his defense. I hope he will act as his own attorney again. He may likely spend the rest of his life in the federal pound since he will have to serve 75% of his multiple sentences before he is eligible for parole.

At one time, I had a nice collection of 78 rpm wax Bluegrass records ranging from the early part of the 20th century and when I moved 4 block west, I threw them out because I sort of lost interest. I should have kept them. I tried learning the 5 string banj but get the hang of it. Should have gone for lessons. Mom had a Violin/fiddle which she didn’t take to Fl. when she moved and I wanted to try the violin/fiddle. Still love the fiddlesticks old sound. Also love OLD Fashioned Country music and not the country nasal sound rock that is sung now a days. by some. Where is Hank Williams and Kitty Wells when you need them. Shame Flatt And Scrugg broke up. Foggy Mountain Break Down was nice.

And look what she said in June 2021:

“MSNBC Contributor: Recent New York City Crime Wave Is Actually The Fault Of The Police”

“I also want to set the proper historical context, because back in the day, by 1950, Missouri had the second-highest number of lynchings outside of the Deep South,” added Cunningham. “So when folks talk about ‘making America great again,’ that’s the kind of Missouri grand ol’ tradition that they want to return to. They want to return to days when you could lynch or murder Black folks and there would be absolutely no retribution for it. That’s not hyperbole. I’m telling you as a Black Missourian and as a protestor, that is reality.”

David

How she makes the jump from “authorities will only charge people who use defensive force if said use of force is unlawful” to “they want to lynch folks freely” is definitely a “huh?” question.

By the way, Missouri had 60 lynchings… in 73 years. For a state with a thriving Klan at the time, sounds relatively tame as a portion of the over 4000 committed in the rest of the nation. Also fails to mention the almost equal number (53) of whites lynched in the same time frame.

A Proud Infidel®™️

You’re using facts, logic and common sense along with actual History, something that liberal moonbats, especially those in the mainstream media are allergic as hell to! The Klan had it biggest heyday in the 1920’s with their upper echelons trying to make a comeback in the 60’s as I was taught, today it has lots and plenty of Informants in its ranks.

“Suspects in Vandalism Incident That Stranded Zoo Ride Passengers Are Marines: USMC: Witnesses told police four men were rocking their gondola back and forth as it carried riders above the San Diego Zoo”
https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/suspects-in-vandalism-incident-that-stranded-zoo-ride-passengers-are-san-diego-based-marines-usmc/2855451/

“Editor’s Note: A previous version of this article reported the Marines were San Diego-based. After publication, a Marine Corps spokesperson confirmed the Marines are stationed at MCAS Yuma but were in San Diego for training.
Four men arrested on felony vandalism charges after an alleged stunt on a San Diego Zoo ride have been identified as Marines assigned to the San Diego-based 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.”

ninja

“Major Mason Englehart, director of communications for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, confirmed to NBC 7 that the men are Marines assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 225 (VMFA 225), based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, but have been in San Diego for about a month while training at MCAS Miramar, where the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is based.”

“The men were identified by police and military officials as Sgt. Jacob Dean Bauer, 23, Lance Cpl. Brayden Stone Posey, 20, Cpl. Brandon Gregory Cook, 21, and Lance Cpl. Marquette Alexander Williams, 21. They were arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism, Savage said.
Witnesses claimed the Marines were rocking the Skyfari Aerial Tram gondola they were in back and forth, according to SDPD officer Darius Jamsetjee.”

“About 100 passengers were on the ride when it was forced to stop. It took a little more than two hours for zoo staff and San Diego Fire-Rescue crews to help them all off.”

ninja

“I can confirm that there was an incident involving U.S. Marines from 3d MAW that occurred on 29 January at the San Diego Zoo. We are committed to being good neighbors to the San Diego community and will continue to work with local authorities as they continue their investigation. Anyone found in violation of law or directive will be held appropriately accountable,” Englehart wrote in an email to NBC 7, adding, “Their behavior is contrary to our core values, and 3d MAW is conducting a separate investigation into the matter as we take misconduct very seriously.”

“Englehart also confirmed the Marines could be charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), federal laws that apply to all active-duty military members.”

“Marissa Florendo, a visitor at the zoo, told NBC 7 Saturday, “They had told everyone to get out of the line and we noticed as we were going through the park that pretty much it was stopped and people were up there for a really long time.”

ninja

“The four Marines were all released from the San Diego Central Jail at around 5 p.m. Saturday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.”

“Official charges will be announced at their arraignment, which is scheduled for Feb. 8, 2022, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.”

Hell Week had concluded, and more information doesn’t seem available on what happened – the Navy release simply says they had ‘symptoms’ after training concluded, but rumor has it being a pulmonary edema. Regardless, a tragic loss, and here’s to hoping the second guy pulls through whatever has him hospitalized.
