A Blast from the Past, Rarities Edition – Part 4
The late David Bowie and Annie Lennox are two of my favorite vocalists. Both were IMO exceptional talents, both as singers and composers.
I wasn’t quite as big a fan of Queen’s music (though much of it is excellent also). But the late Freddy Mercury was indeed an exceptional vocalist as well as a fine songwriter.
Both Mercury and Lennox collaborated with Bowie on the tune “Under Pressure”. Mercury and Bowie did the original; Lennox and Bowie performed an exceptional version of the tune at Mercury’s tribute concert.
It’s not often you see a vocal performance that might outshine all three. This one IMO just might.
Recorded in the Netherlands in 1996; here ya go.
The lady singing Mercury’s part in the tune is named Gail Ann Dorsey. She’s an accomplished session musician (mostly on bass guitar), and has also released a few albums as a solo artist. She toured with Bowie from 1995 until his death in 2016.
And as the video above shows, Ms. Dorsey can also sing wonderfully.
Category: Pointless blather, Who knows
Excellent performance. Thanks, Hondo.
Okay, my day is complete. Bowie, a marvelous girl singer, and not whats-her-name but someone else gets the nod. I’m going to go fix pancakes now.
I gots some thick cut Applewood Smoked Bacon to go with the pancakes Mi’Lady. Maybe 26Limabeans can bring some real Maple Syrup to go with them. I do have a jug of the pure cane syrup left from last fall’s squeezing. Fresh strawberries are in abundance still, but the local blueberries aren’t quite ready. Least when we hijack a thread it gots something to do with food. Wonder why that is?
Tanks for the concert Hondo. Seeing/hearing a good bass thumping surely makes me regret not pursuing a musical career v a guaranteed paycheck in the business world.
Speaking of blast from the past, just watched at an episode of Have Gun Will Travel (c1958) with a very very young Charles Bronson. Paladin helped him win the girl. (Grace Raynor)

FWIW: Palance was indeed older than Bronson – but by less than 3 years. Palance was born in Feb 1919; Bronson, in Nov 1921. And both served in the US Army Air Forces during World War II.
But I also gotta say: Applewood smoked bacon? What, have you gone all Yuppie or Metro on us, 5/77?
What’s wrong with hickory-smoked bacon?
Oh not to worry Brother Hondo, I gots hickory smoked too…and some of the Hormel Black Label Maple. That one is getting harder to find of late. I merely mentioned the Applewood cause I think that Ex had mentioned before that she liked it. My overall bacon inventories are lower than ever right now, I thinks I’m down to less than 20 lbs. And I have been making the bacon coated pancakes for awhile too. They made an easy to snack on breakfast fill in when you’re 35 feet in the air and only got one spare hand.
Teaser from Boomer’s Sunday.
There’s an earworm clip I could post here that would fit perfectly. But I’ll spare everyone. (smile)
Heh. Sorry for abetting the thread-jack, and thanks for sparing us the earworm.
*grin*
Cinnamon rolls and hickory smoked bacon… not our normal breakfast but a good one on a sodden Saturday.
Pancakes and J’ville sausage…. and real maple syrup.
Big fan of Bowie, and Freddy Mercury. I appreciate a master vocalist, no matter the genre or style.
Here’s a kid, being called the greatest vocalist of the past 100 years, literally a one in a billion voice. Six octave range using head voice, chest voice, mixed voice, perfect breathe control. Simply inhuman but stunningly beautiful tone.
The song is in French, English subtitles, performed on a Chinese tv show singing competition by a kid from Kazakhstan. He also sings in 12 languages and speaks 4. Of course they didn’t let him win, he’s not Chinese, he came in 2nd or 3rd.
It may not be your taste in music (not really mine either), but do yourself a favor listen for the voice.
