I teach at the high school level, and I’ve had a couple of black students who sit through the pledge.
One of them explained herself by saying that the pledge references slavery. When I corrected her by saying that she was thinking of the Star Spangled Banner, and that references to slavery in that song are actually referring to the British practice of conscription, she asked, “do you want me to Google it for you?” I laughed in her face and walked away.
The other two notable “protesters” I’ve had are even less intellectually impressive than her, if that’s possible.
So I’ve got better things to do than waste my time, and imperil my own ambitions, with the thoughtless actions of a few ungrateful imbeciles.
But they’re so woke, yo…
I googled it for you. Prior to 9/11 there was a move afoot to call the flag racist really for no good reason. It kind of went away after 9/11. I guess it is coming back.
