‘I will kill you face’
A choir director charged Marine Colonel Joseph Murray with using his “I will kill you face” and knife hands in an encounter near Quantico Marine Corps base in Virginia, according to USA Today;
An inspector general’s inquiry found merit in DeSilva’s complaint that Murray had intimidated her when he confronted her in a rage, but could not determine if he had broken the law. The Marines also found “no probable cause supporting any misconduct” by Murray or the investigators in the case of Father Kieran Mandato, according to a Marine Corps spokesman.
The church flap joins a growing list of problems at Quantico, known as the “Crossroads of the Marine Corps,” involving allegations of sexual harassment and a toxic work environment. The base is about 30 miles south of Washington.
DeSilva and Mandato, a retired Navy chaplain and former contract priest at Quantico, said in interviews that Murray’s actions had terrified them. The incidents arose from disputes about payments to Mandato, a roster of parishioners he had at his home and perceived personal slights from the pulpit.
DeSilva in her complaint to the inspector general said, “While it may be appropriate for every Marine to have an ‘I will kill you face,’ it is not appropriate to use that face on a 52-year-old female choir director in church.”
“I feared for my life,” Mandato said.
So, apparently, folks can construe facial expressions as assault. The investigators found “No probable cause supporting any misconduct” by Colonel Murray.

I had a complaint lodged against me at my son’s daycare the other day. He’s lactose intolerant, and when I picked him up that day, he was eating a snack that we hadn’t provided. I asked his caretaker to show me the bag so that I could confirm that it was safe for him to eat, she responded, “oh, he can eat those!”
I said, “Then please show me the bag, and I’ll confirm it.” Just like that- didn’t raise my voice or curse or anything. Just directly and firmly made a request for the protection of my child.
But apparently I yelled at her, and am not to speak to her like that again.
Wear a camera and record everything. Then offer to show what happened to her supervisor.
My tolerance for these overgrown children is draining away, bit by bit.

Which I found to be a strangely inarticulate threat for a Marine Colonel to be making…but still makes more sense than “using his ‘I will kill you face’”.
I didn’t get it at first, either. It took me a while to realize the quote belonged to someone other than Murray in describing his face. In other words, if looks could kill, the choir director would have been DRT. I attribute my denseness to a lack of sleep. It’s as good as any reason.
What USA Today should have written was Murray had an “I-will-kill-you face.” That would have made the matter clear from the start.

I had to read the article three times to suss out wtf actually happened. My take, a Marine and a ‘contract priest’ pissed off a real Marine over improper Marine-ing, the real Marine confronted them and they proceeded to get really butthurt.

There is no description of these ‘slights’, or exactly what was said, but if it was personal stuff aired in church and aimed at the colonel, one would have to ask why. That kind of thing is grossly inappropriate and should be dealt with privately.
Some of this stuff is annoying, and some of it does not make any sense at all.
Ah yes, my home turf. I saw this early the other morning while prepping for the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon.
I agree with just about all of the comments above. This is the height of lunacy. The colonel is an intense guy and I’m sure that may be intimidating to your average mousey choir director. This is, however, a Marine base. It is in this place that the concepts were devised that won the Pacific war. It is where people come up with the concepts for defeating the next enemy way may face in the Pacific. Civilians on base generally have served, are retired or have grown up around Marines, e.g. spouses and children. They should know that Marines get intense. If you don’t like it, probably shouldn’t work at a place that SERVES MARINES!
This is just a bunch of bullshit typical of the kind of complaints that serves to put warfighting, and the development of TTPs, in second place.
Certainly can’t have people thinking about winning wars and making Marines when their are offended choir directors to pacify.
Well, I can only assume that Col. Murray is a flaming asshole – not because of this incident, but because he’s a Marine Colonel.
Not only is being a flaming asshole not a disqualifier for that position, from my experience, it’s a job requirement for any O-6. You don’t rise to that level in any branch of service by being Mister Rogers.
DeSilva might need to brush up on what the Marines are and what they do because it doesn’t seem like she understands the organization she’s working with.

List of the names the chaplain had purportedly contained PI so CID investigated. They found there was no PI in the list, cleared the chaplain and commander, and went away. Routine follow-up unless you believe the ‘chaplain’ that they stormed his house like Iwo Jima. Read the USA today article.
