Teen dies from Russian Roulette

| November 4, 2017

SJ sends us a link to WCTI12 which reports that 17-year-old Tovaris DeLoach killed himself while playing Russian Roulette.

Columbus police spokesman Joe Dillion says three other males in the room told officers Deloach was discussing Russian Roulette as he took out a revolver and removed the bullets.

Dillion says Deloach put a bullet in the chamber, held the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn’t discharge. He later pulled the trigger for a second time and the weapon fired.

The Media clearly describes the firearm used in the tragic death as a revolver, so why do they use a scary, black semi-automatic pistol as a graphic for the article?

I don’t recommend using a semi-automatic handgun for your game of Russian Roulette.

The article says that there was “an apparent retaliation shooting” after DeLoach’s death. Whoever “retaliated” didn’t get the person responsible for DeLoach’s death.

CLAW!!! Pick up the red courtesy phone for a scrabble score report re Mr. Tovaris DeLoach .

Mick

Tovaris DeLoach

— sigh —

desert

Actually it should be “Tovarich” as per putin et al! lol

Jon The Mechanic

I know that I am not Claw, but my calculations from the Scrabble TAH Home Edition give him a score of Tovaris DeLoach 23 x(DOT) 3 = 69.

Claw

Roger. Was watching the snow fall and doing crossword puzzles while Mrs. Claw was hogging the computer playing AARP Bingo.

Thanks, Jon.

Sj

I would think a Supply Sgt could come up with a “Found on Post” computer?

Snow? Scooby must hate that.

Shades of JOHNNY ACE in the movie theater, 1954 RIP, Your song is still alive.

Ex-PH2

Oh, now, you know that reporters are all afraid of guns and can’t tell the difference between a revolver and a pistol!

The real question is how did this deceased 17-year-old get his hands on a gun in the first place?

The Other Whitey

A revolver *is* a pistol, Ex. But you are otherwise correct.

rgr769

Ex, all pistols are handguns, but consist of revolvers, semi-autos, derringers, and single-shot pistols; there are even a few full-auto pistols (the Mauser broomhandle Schnellfuer being one example). When it comes to firearms, the ignorance of the media is unrivaled.

Ex-PH2

Well, I was going on the differentiation between the two, which is that while both are handguns, a revolver contains a revolving cylinder in which bullets are loaded. Revolvers usually hold six shots. The ATF defines a pistol as any handgun that does not contain its ammunition in a revolving cylinder.

So technically, I’m still correct.

Smooches!!!

How deep is the snow where you are? Or are you getting any snow at all?

The Other Whitey

As an example: US Pistol, Caliber .45, Model 1873. Otherwise known as the Peacemaker or Single-Action Army Revolver. A pistol is a pistol, be it a semiauto, revolver, multibarrel, muzzleloader, etc.

Sorry, that just triggers my OCD/grammar-naziism. Besides, it wouldn’t be the first time ATF’s terminology utterly failed.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

That’s like everyone except the peeps that know their shit call a mag a clip but I think in the old Army 1911 manual, it is called a clip. Pistols/revolvers are usually generalized as pistols when they are mentioned unless the peeps who really know their shit are discussing the subject. Love to make a short story long.

desert

When I was a kid, (back when Noah was first mate!) they were ALL called clips! I still catch my self calling a mag. a clip!

OWB

You are not alone. A lot of folks who really should not be called ignorant still do.

Still not certain when it became so fashionable to act all arrogant about the nomenclature.

Roger in republic

No kidding. ATF defines a Mare’s Leg lever action Winchester as a pistol. The Chappia version has a 9 inch barrel.

jonp

It’s all length of barrel which is why you have pistol AR15’s and muzzle breaks that have pin holes to soldier or weld them on to make a 14in barrel a 16in and a legal rifle. Stupid but it is what it is

Reverend Pointy Head

That isn’t even a real gun they posted. That grip is not typical of a Beretta M92 nor is the position of the trigger relative to the hammer as it appears in “half-cock”.

Reverend Pointy Head

Plus the dimensions if it behind and below the safety look fucked up. I probably don’t have much room to weigh in on the debate considering I referred to the weapon in question as a “gun” but pistols are pistols. They were called that before revolvers were even dreamt of.

jonp

looks ok to me. I’m not sure what you are looking at that makes you think otherwise. The grip is typical and the trigger/hammer looks ok. I think it is the angle of the photo that is a little off

Reverend Pointy Head

Look closely at the grip panel. The thumb relief extends too far into the end of the frame close to the hammer guard. My guess is that it’s a blank replica like U.S. Cavalry used to sell in the late ’90s.

Reverend Pointy Head

Also lack of scrol marks both frame and slide, no lanyard loop, the Beretta logo is missing and the rear sight isn’t dovetailed but more of a high post. I could leave that to journalistic photoshoppinf to make a solid white background but the grip panel is a dead giceaway that it’s a fake.

gitarcarver

As I love mysteries like this, I took the image of the gun itself and did a Google search for it.

It appears to be an older version of a Swiss Arms CO2 / BB gun.

I then threw it into a program that can detect what changes have been done to an image and there has been color added to the slide where the Swiss Arms logo would be as well as color added in the circle on the handle were the Swiss Arms logo is embossed.

That’s my opinion.

Take it for what’s it’s worth.

Reverend Pointy Head

You’re probably spot on, gitarcarver.
I’m looking at a bunch of Beretta 92 knock-off blank firing replicas that fit the same grip panel screw-up but none have the blank circle where the Beretta logo should be. This looks like a job for NCIS considering the show hasn’t been military relevant in years.

Reverend Pointy Head

Also, my apologies for the thread high-jack, Ex-PH2.
Back to topic, I don’t think the odds for surviving a game of Russian Roulette are better than 1 in six but I’m going by Vegas numbers, here.

Hondo

That depends on the specific revolver used. Some revolvers hold more than six rounds; some less.

Of course, that assumes the fool playing Russian roulette is at least smart enough to use a revolver. If the fool uses a semiautomatic, well, the player’s odds of winning go down a bit. (smile)

And yeah, apparently that has happened on occasion.

http://darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin2000-04.html

Reverend Pointy Head

Indeed, Hondo. Most pocket revolvers only hold 5. Some hold more ( I actually managed to jam a Taurus. 22 that held ten). The Vegas odd remark poorly lampshaded the variable. I’m new despite being a longtime reader so I’m still feeling my posture out. Ok that just sounded gross.

Reverend Pointy Head

On that note I want to thank you all for having me, here. You guys are an honor to meet and much needed therapy for me, veterans who come here and we who make our careers many no longer in uniform but continue to fight for our country. God bless you all

Ex-PH2

I give up.

I try to understand this glomming onto weapons and discussing terminology and the finer points, but you guys wouldn’t understand me, either, if I launched into a discussion of the finer points of cooking specific foods. You’d just say ‘it’s food, it’s cooked, it’s good, where’s the beer?’ and I’d throw my hands up.

Ex-PH2

Oh, and this genius most likely didn’t know the difference between revolvers or pistols, either.

jonp

It think you have that whole statement backwards, PH2

desert

If you look up “freaking idiot” in the dictionary, this canary’s picture is there!
Tovarich that is lol

Reverend Pointy Head

It’s semantics. Curators and firearm geeks including myself have an organization disorder regarding what fits into which category. If you’re cool with considering the AKS-74U a submachinegun or a pdw or an assault rifle that alone draws unnecessary heated debate. Then again most of those opinions are drawn from video game experience and not the utility these weapons were made under in the real world.

MSGT Richard Deiters USMC(Retired)

The retaliation shooting may have been a relative aiming to get the person who allowed the deceased to have access to the gun.

Hondo

“Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”

Wish I could remember which of our commenters coined that phrase – it’s a keeper.

NHSparky

I never coined it, but I find myself using it quite often these days.

At some point the gun grabbers are going to realize a couple of things: first, the gun is a tool. Second, even if you somehow convinced every law-abiding citizen to turn in their guns (never happen) the criminals will ALWAYS find a way to get their hands on one.

CWORet

It’s been around for ages. Long before TAH. Applies here, though. Should be filed under ‘Dumb ass shit’. Which IS a TAH exclusive…

It’s been around since I was 8. That’s when I sprayed a wasps’ nest with a water hose, and what my Uncle Tom told me as my Mom and Grandmother were putting baking soda on the sting sites.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

worse mistake, buying the 92SF after the Mil. adopted it. Mine was made in Italy which uses the metric system so I had to order the pin punches etc. from Brownells in metric. Even had a problem trying to fit a comp. barrel for unclassified comp matches at the Freeport NY PD range I belonged to. Not that great as a smith so thank God I never touched the slide. Lots of red dycem dye and a good file was a no go and still have the two barrels in the cabinet.

Instinct

You could have ended that sentence after “buying the 92SF”

😀

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Love to make a short story long

Hondo

The Media clearly describes the firearm used in the tragic death as a revolver, so why do they use a scary, black semi-automatic pistol as a graphic for the article?

1. Because they’re clueless and ignorant concerning firearms?
2. Because they’re dumbasses idiots?
3. Because they have an agenda?
4. More than one of the above?

I’m guessing 4.

CCO

It’s a standard graphic that “they” use? (“They” went to a picture of a semi-auto as a generic pistol sometime after Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Saturday Night Special” fell off the charts; probably in the ’80s or early ’90s?)

And I was told that a gun was a crew-served weapon.

Sapper3307

Darwin award candidate.

Hondo

Candidate? I’d say “Winner” instead.

Wonder if he chugged a big bottle of Tiger’s Blood (thank you, Charlie Sheen) before the second trigger pull?

Sadness. This saddens me. Sometimes stupidity and immaturity do not allow for second chances. JMO

Mick

Not to mention the three moronic assclowns who were there when he did this, but apparently didn’t do anything to stop him.

Hondo

I can see that happening, Mick. People that age seem to think they’re bulletproof. This guy proved that’s not the case.

Mr. Pete

Yes, all joking aside, this is sad, really.

A young man is dead because of his incredible stupidity. Perhaps his “friends” egged him also; apparently they did nothing to stop him.

Bill M

I’d almost bet that his ‘friends’ (or a specific ‘friend’) egged him on, which might account for the retaliation shooting referenced.

Just An Old Dog

Amen to that.
At his age I had graduated high school and was going into the service.
I am betting this kid wasn’t fortunate enough to have the positive influences I had.

jonp

All kidding aside, your right. It is actually a tragedy.

CCO

Too true.

Perry Gaskill

There doesn’t seem to be an excess of Nobel laureates in the neighborhood. Some additional details are that a so-called retaliation following Deloach’s self-cancellation did indeed amount to shots fired. Unfortunately, the shooter apparently intended to blast the Deloach residence, for whatever reason, but got confused and shot at the neighbor’s house instead.

Claw

Have been rethinking the TAH Name Scrabble (Home Version) score of 69 awarded to Tovaris DeLoach.

Seems to me that since he was a Darwin Award Winner and is currently taking a DRT nap by his own hand, he should receive an exception to the standard multiplication rules and have the basic score quadrupled.

Therefore, I propose his score be bumped up to 92.

Can I get a Second/Aye?

Mr. Pete

Aye!

RetiredDevilDoc8404

More defective DNA removed from the gene pool, I’ve said for years some people are too stupid to live. This is just the latest to prove that statement correct… Note to morons, this is not a video game, there is no reset button. If you die you don’t go back to your last saved game, it’s game over…

OOH RAH! Absolutely correct Doc

RDD, Not necessarily true. In his demographic he could already have one or more shorties to his credit, each by different baby mommas.

rgr769

One would think that after he pulled the trigger the first time and didn’t blow his brains out, he would have said, “yay, I win; now its your turn.” Kid apparently didn’t understand Russian Roulette. Pulling the trigger the second time just cut the odds of him not blowing his brains out about in half.

The Stranger

I had a buddy that was working on a utility project down in Oklahoma. They had dug a trench for underground electrical conduit one day and when they returned the next day, there was a big old rattlesnake in the trench. The foreman told my buddy to jump in the trench and move the snake out of there. My buddy refused and was told, “Hey, don’t worry, rattlers only inject venom one out of every three strikes.” Ol’ Dave told the foreman, “I don’t like those odds. That’s like playing Russian Roulette with two bullets in the chamber. Fuck that.” Clearly, the subject of this article didn’t really think this through.

The Stranger

I’m kind of surprised nobody has posted the Robert De Niro “didi mao” clip.

NHSparky

Cause some poser fuck will claim that scene was based on his “experience” in RVN.
