USS Nitze responds to attacks from Yemen

USS_Nitze_DDG94

Mick sends us a link from Fox News which reports that USS Nitze, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, fired cruise missiles at, and destroyed radar installations on the coast of Yemen that had been targeting missiles on US ships that were in international waters.

Cook said President Barack Obama authorized the strikes at the recommendation of Defense Secretary Ash Carter and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford. He added that these were limited self-defense strikes conducted to protect U.S. personnel, ships and freedom of navigation.

Meanwhile, the state news agency Saba— under Houthis’ control— quoted an unnamed military official as saying that US accusations that a US destroyer had come under attack from areas under control of Houthis were false. He said, “all these claims are totally untrue and that the popular committees (Houthi militias) have nothing to do with such action.”

There is no word on casualties related to the strike on Iranian-backed Houthi installations – my guess would be “not enough”.

About effing time. IMO that should have happened within 30 min of the initial missile launch and should never have required a decision by the POTUS – local commanders should have ROI giving them that much leeway.

Also IMO the only acceptable reason for a longer delay would have been to plan and execute a carrier strike mission.

Bingo!

MustangCryppie

Just heard that the Iranians are sending a couple of ships to the area.

Bring it on, motherfuckers.

Hayabusa

Well, that should provide the men and women of the Fifth Fleet with an afternoon of quality entertainment. I hope someone remembers to bring the popcorn.

ex-OS2

Did someone say popcorn?

HMC Ret

ANY aggression from the goat humping, women beating Iranians should be met with overwhelming force, sufficient to sink their shitty little ships. And when they send a larger force to retaliate, sink that shit, too.

Any survivors in the water? Throw them ham sandwiches and tell them an Iranian rescue ship will come by shortly. Maybe the sandwiches will attract sharks. Works for me, but then, again, I’m a grungy old bastard sick of this shit.

Yemen. Is there anything there that DOESN’T warrant bombardment? Also we need to dig out some of those old 16 inch guns, there’s a load of old munitions in storage that needs disposal. In Yemen.

Ex-PH2

Radar installations destroyed – Good. More, please.

Why is Iran sticking its oar into this? Oh, that’s right, they have some cash to spare and they can spend it on warfare junk.

I posted this on the other ‘Yemen shoots missiles’ thread:

In Jan.1998, Brzezinski said, in an interview with Le Nouvel Observateur “What is more important to the history of the world? The end of the Soviet empire or the Taliban? The end of Soviet control of eastern Europe and a free Europe, or a few disgruntled muslims?”

That’s Zbigniew Brzezinski, in case anyone was wondering. Jimmy Carter’s foreign policy advisor. He’s the one who convinced Peanuts Carter to support the Taliban against the USSR in Afghanistan.

He also advised bodaprez to start reducing the military’s strength back in 2009, when he went back into the White House.

And just look where we are now.

I blame him for everything that is wrong now.

OldSoldier54

Whoa … Jimah the Peanut … the gift that just keeps on giving. More’s the pity …

Hondo

“Gift that keeps on giving?” I prefer to think of him as the rotten peanut that’s still giving us heartburn 35 years later.

Grimmy

“…Taliban against the USSR in Afghanistan.”

That’s dead wrong. I hate Jimmeh teh Carteh with a passion, but the Taliban didn’t come into Afghanistan from it’s place of creation (Pakistan) until AFTER the Sovs left Afghanistan.

The ones we in the US supported were still fighting the Taliban when we went into Afghanistan post 9/11.

We fucked that up by being the Weak Horse in Afghan and making it damn clear from day one that we had no hope of figuring out how to fight to win a war.

Ex-PH2

Carter was advised by Brzezkinski to support al Qaida and the Taliban and lure the Soviets into Afghanistan. The CIA was heavily involved in this business. I found plenty of documentation to support that, not some crank website full of conspiracy theories.

Everything fucking thing that is wrong in the world today can be blamed on Brzezinski, starting back when he was Johnson’s advisor in 1966-1968. If you were around in 1968, that was the year of the Tet Offensive, and also the year that LBJ said he would not run for a 2nd term.

Graybeard

Ah, yes. The Tet Offensive. The battle we won on the ground, and lost in the newspapers. The war micro-managed by the Administration, despised by the media, and lost by a lack of willpower.

Amazing how we see so many parallels…

Jeffro

Iran has been involved here for a loooooong time. They are supporting the Houthis'( hoping to destabilize the Saudis ) and trying to win a toehold on the peninsula. They are also involved in Somalia and Kenya.

Graybeard

Another thing the clowns in this Admin need to understand: These folks attacking us are looking to provoke an apocalypse. They want one.
Therefore, they will keep pushing until they get one.
The only question is – how widespread will it need to be to put an end to the threat to the West and free people everywhere?
Like an untreated cancer, the longer you wait, the greater the damage, and the greater the chance that we don’t survive.

Ex-PH2

How long will it be until a real shooting war starts? That’s the real question. YOu guys all natter on about using nukes, as if that would be effective.

Sorry, but a nuclear explosion does not leave a glassed surface. It leaves behind granulated microscopic pellets called trinitite.

And if there is a shooting war, whoever is in the seat in the Oval Office will either be blamed or praised for the results.

Graybeard

I beg to differ, Ex-PH2. I don’t natter about nukes. I’m not sure we want to go there.

But looking at what the Imams preach, an Armageddon is what they want and are driving toward, thinking it will bring in their champion warrior to usher in a new world. I think they are mis-reading the Book of Revelation, but never mind.

The point is – do we beat them early, when the movement is still small (ok, a bit late for that one) or wait until they have most of the muslim world under their control, and fight them everywhere?

If we have a coyote who kills chickens, and teaches her whelps to kill chickens, the sooner you exterminate the coyote and all her whelps, the safer the chickens will be.

Ex-PH2

No, you don’t ‘natter’ about nukes, but there are several who do so. I have no quarrel with your take on this, but as I said, the real fault lies with Brzezinski, for his dismissive response to the interviewer’s question in the 1998 Paris interview. The interviewer asked him THEN what made him think there was no global threat from Islam, and his response was ‘a few disgruntled muslims’.

And look where we are now.

The Other Whitey

Considering the source, who wants to bet it was really some poor dumb random Arab trying to improve his TV reception?

David

Yesterday the administration was “considering” a response. Today we read of it. Tomorrow we will hear that the captain has been relieved for exceeding his command authority…NO BODY upstages the White House and actually makes a decision like this in less than 30 days.

Pinto Nag

YES!!!!

OldManchu

Wait a second? Is this part of the Navy Birthday celebration? Cool.

Bill M

One should always celebrate by setting off fireworks.

And, between Jawn Fraud sKerry and Wide Load Clintoon, the bungling has been wide-spread on getting worse, as if that were possible.
