SWAT shootout in Atlanta suburb kills a man and wounds an officer

ROSWELL, Ga. (AP) — A bulletproof vest saved a SWAT police officer’s life just before he returned fire and killed a fleeing man Friday in an Atlanta suburb, the police chief said.

A SWAT team in Roswell was serving arrest and search warrants when a man ran out the back of a house and encountered an officer, said Police Chief James Conroy at a news conference. The fleeing man fired a handgun, twice striking the officer in the chest, before the officer shot back and killed the man, Conroy said.

The chief said the officer was hit by shrapnel but protected from more serious wounds by his bulletproof vest.

“It appears the vest has saved his life, but he did suffer injuries from the incident,” Conroy said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now leading the inquiry into the shooting by the officer, as is typical in Georgia.

Officers came to the house looking to arrest a man accused of firing a gun into the air on New Year’s Eve after being asked to leave a party. Conroy said that after officers investigated, they found the man had a violent criminal history.

That’s when police decided to call in the SWAT team jointly operated by four cities in northern Fulton County to serve warrants, Conroy said. Those were for reckless conduct, firing a gun on someone else’s property and being a convicted felon in possession of a gun.

Hopes for a swift and complete recovery for the LEO. Thanks, Gun Bunny.

If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 50 years ago, a liberal 25 years ago, and a racist today.

Vest saved the officer’s life? You bet’cha!
But the force of those bullets has to go somewhere. That officer has (at minimum) bruises and broken ribs. After getting out of the hospital, he’s going to be riding a desk for awhile.

Yep. One thing that I don’t have is “body armor”. Need to take care of that “missing link”. Pro tip for dummies…don’t shoot at LEOs. Tends to piss them off…and they shoot back. Good job on taking out the trash after becoming wounded, Officer.

Ain’t everything RAAAAYYCISS today? ‘specially if one is a whyte male?

Plink, plink, plink, plink is all well and good but there is nothing that stirs the blood like an Earth Shattering KA-BOOOOM.

Bruising? Yup. Broken ribs from a “standard” pistol? Not likely. The guy that invented soft body armor Mr. Davis, demonstrated his product by shooting himself in the chest or abdomen with a 6″ 357 magnum, then turning and shooting the rest of the rounds at a target. He had bruising but never broken ribs. There have been several pictures of the results of being hit in the vest and they showed circular bruising. Had the Officer suffered broken ribs it would have severely degraded his ability to return fire rapidly.

On behalf of taxpayers everywhere, I appreciate the SWAT team for taking this problem out of the gene pool and saving the Georgia taxpayers the expenses of a trial, incarceration, etc.
