Retired General Mark Milley’s official portrait taken down at Pentagon
On Monday afternoon, people noticed an empty spot at a Pentagon wall where Retired General Mark Milley’s portrait hung. Milley’s portrait was among the portraits of previous Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on display. Although ABC News didn’t get a definite response on why this occurred, recent history provides hints.

The portrait was unveiled on Friday, Jan. 10, at a ceremony in that hallway, with both Milley and then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin present. The portrait’s disappearance was first noted by reporters at the Pentagon who observed the empty space where the portrait hung just a few hours before. It is not clear why the portrait was removed from the hallway, but ABC News has reached out to the White House for comment.
Milley, who was preemptively pardoned on Monday by then-President Joe Biden as part of a last-minute slate of pardons, retired as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2023. Appointed by Trump during is first administration in July 2018, Milley drew ire from Republican officials following the United States’ military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
“My family and I are deeply grateful for the President’s action today,” he said. “After forty-three years of faithful service in uniform to our Nation, protecting and defending the Constitution, I do not wish to spend whatever remaining time the Lord grants me fighting those who unjustly might seek retribution for perceived slights. I do not want to put my family, my friends, and those with whom I served through the resulting distraction, expense, and anxiety.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve our great country in uniform for over four decades, and I will continue to keep faith and loyalty to our nation and Constitution until my dying breath,” Milley added.

Keep yer fingers crossed – SCOTUS long ago ruled that if you accepted a pardon, you are admitting guilt. So somebody ought to be quietly asking the Boeing or Raytheon boards (for instance) if they want an admitted felon in the boardroom.

If he was granted a pardon by Joe Biden, that means that he committed crimes at a federal level. And we are not supposed to hold criminals in high esteem, correct?
It also infers those crimes were committed while he was in uniform and subject to the UCMJ, yet he was permitted to retire and draw a pension.

Veterans from the war that I spoke to in my youth loved, worshipped and even feared the men who wore stars. Nimitz, Halsey, Patton, Bradley and Ike (to name a few) were more than just leaders of war fighters — they were heroes and household names back in the states.

I forgot to mention the Marine generals in the Pacific — men who actually respected the boys on the ground fighting a horrific and dirty war. I believe it was General Vandegrift who, when seeing a salty old senior noncom walk out to receive a medal in his beat up dungarees simply smiled and carried on with the ceremony.
The respect was deep and mutual, the love of country was even deeper.
