Flag burning at RNC leads to 18 arrests
Yahoo News reports that 18 people were arrested outside the Republican National Convention when their little protest got out of hand during the burning of an American flag. The Cleveland police claim that none were arrested for actually burning the flag, but rather felony assault on a police officer, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said during a press briefing Wednesday night that the protester who set the flag alight inadvertently set his pants leg on fire. When police officers tried to extinguish the flames, he fought back, which led to the felony assault charge.
The melee involved a group, identified by local media as the Revolutionary Communist Party, outside the secure delegate entrance to the Republican National Convention hall and near Cleveland’s East Fourth Street entertainment district.
Protesters Joseph Scogin, 38, of Oxnard, Calif., and Dominique Knox, age unknown, of Cleveland, were charged with felony assault on a police officer.

Williams said that the suspects were not arrested for lighting the flag on fire, but rather for inciting violence and assault.
“[The protester] lit himself on fire … he lit other people on fire,” which turned the demonstration into what police deemed an “unlawful assembly,” Williams said.

One of the flag burners was Gregory Lee “Joey” Johnson who burned a flag at the 1984 GOP Convention – his arrest went to the Supreme Court. I guess he missed the attention.

“Dominique Knox, age unknown” is a 23-year old black male and “community activist” (If oBaMa had a son…) who was also arrested last October for acting the fool at a Cleveland City Council meeting. Of course, there could be more than one Dominique Knox who lives in Cleveland, participates in protests there, and gets himself arrested.

You might first want to check the city codes about open burning. Of anything. That is the proper way to stop flag burners – when it doesn’t matter what the object is that is ignited, the ticket and/or arrest will stand Constitutional muster.
Without a city code precluding open burning, however, it can’t be done easily. Cleveland may well have that code and would have been what the protesters were cited with to get them to quit, but the escalated situation necessitated the greater charges.
The cockles of my heart certainly were warmed at the sight of those stinking hippies being arrested.

Contrary to what some here seem to think, ‘Leftists’ (by which I mean the crazies who are always protesting and identify as being on the ‘Left’ politically) are but a small number of the full ‘Left’. I have never once in my life argued that a protest should be shut down. And I have never once thought it was OK for the state to use violence to end a peaceful protest.

Hmm. I guess that means you were OK with the “Occupy (Whatever)” morons crapping on police cars and ruining numerous public parks a couple of years ago through continuous unlawful occupation of public property. But I’ll bet you’d change your tune if they were protesting by unlawfully occupying and damaging or destroying property you owned – like your house, or a piece of property on which you planned (after obtaining all required local permits and approvals) to build a home or business. In that latter case, sooner or later you’d be screaming for the local authorities to evict the trespassers; my guess is that would take maybe 5 minutes.
I also suspect you’d have a problem with someone camping out for months on end on the National Mall, sans permits, as part of a protest campaign advocating modification of the 1st Amendment to prohibit, say, the sale of works by Marx – or to declare Islam “not a religion for the purposes of the 1st Amendment” – no matter how peaceful they were. Hell, my guess is that you’d be at the front of the line demanding the National Park Police “get rid of those un-American bastards”, no matter how peaceful their protests.
Society has the right to enforce its laws. If an idiot persists in demanding they be allowed to break the law, then at some point some level of violence may be required by LE to compel them to cease acting lawfully. (Remember: even being cuffed and carried to a police car for transport after arrest is in fact a low-level use of violence by LE.) Doing that is not un-American; rather, it’s nothing more than common sense and basic law enforcement. The former (common sense) is something obviously lacking in both you and your alma mater. You also seem to have a problem with the concept of the latter being a valid exercise of government authority.
I don’t mind smart, constructive protests. I abhor stupid, destructive protests.
Unfortunately we see too many of the latter these days. There are plenty of good causes that deserve attention, yes, so focus on bringing attention to them, not on castigating entire groups of people (eg, police, Republicans, whatever) and not putting forth a singular, notable idea for positive change.
As for flag burning, I recognize it’s someone’s right.. but I will absolutely have words with someone who chooses to do that. Calm, measured words because anger only makes other people defensive, but that’s what I feel we need more of – reasonable disagreement, not angry rhetoric.
One can rationally argue that burning the US Flag in front of Veterans is as just as much an emotionally-charged “fighting words” event as swinging nooses and shouting a particular nasty word at a gathering of NAACP members who sport a permanent sunscreen.
The key thing to remember is that the Communist/Anarchist/Dickhead -leadership- always convinces some expendable fools to burn a US flag, in the sincere hope that they get pounded into the sidewalk, thus providing another set of martyrs to the evil/stupid/crazy cause that is Marxism and its various collective-idiot offspring.

I was walking through a park with some very liberal friends during the Occupy Wall Street protests and saw a guy waving our flag upside down. Not burning it, mind you, just flying it upside down, which was actually somewhat shocking to see. I ended up going over to him and striking up a conversation, and while I’m not sure if that conversation had any effect or if it was some other action others had taken, he didn’t fly the flag that way again.
There is a long stretch of middle ground between lending people a match and stomping people into the ground when it comes to burning the flag. I think we’re stronger as a country the more people who take that middle ground, so I do my tiny part to help.
And thank you; I assure you I won’t let it go to my head. I’m too busy puzzling over how an Army man made a reference to leaning to’port’!
