Emily gets her gun permit

| February 25, 2015

Our buddy, Emily Miller, got her gun permit to carry a handgun in the District of Columbia. You might remember that she walked us through the process of qualifying for owning a gun in the nation’s capital while she was a reporter at the Washington Times, and in her book “Emily Gets Her Gun. Now she works at WTTG Fox5 and she navigated the hoops for a permit allowing her to take her handgun on the streets of DC.

DC News FOX 5 DC WTTG

Keep in mind, any American can apply for a D.C. gun permit. But so far, only 76 have done so. Thirty-one were denied. Five cancelled their own applications. And 16 were approved.

I was shocked to hear that I am the 15th person the police chief approved for a carry permit.

Why me?

[…]

I have only received preliminary approval. To get the permit, I have to take 18 hours of classes with an instructor certified by the police within 45 days. I’m taking the class, but my decision whether or not to carry a gun in public is a personal one and will remain private.

No one could legally carry a gun in D.C. a year ago. Today, there are 16 of us who may exercise our Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Emily was the victim of a violent crime a few years ago in DC, but so are many DC residents. I was assaulted a few times myself in the ten years I lived in the city. So, I’m sure there are many who will qualify, eventually. It’s a slow start, but it’s a good start.

“Today, there are 16 of us who may exercise our Second Amendment right to bear arms.” Therein lies the problem, no bureaucrat should be able to determine who can and cannot exercise their rights.

Obligatory…. (“I’ll give her a gun permit”)

Why did you live in DC? That sounds like a terrible experience.

Many folks I know who live there do it for the convenience. Those who work in the district find the Metro easier than living in the suburbs and driving in and paying to park. Much of the city is very nice, but like any other major city, there are areas that are less than desireable.

I’m laying here trying to fall asleep, and when I have nothing better to do I like to just hit Home every minute or so just to read the comments people write, just so you know why my response is so quick haha. I have only been once, and it was a long time ago and I remember the places outside of where the monuments are being rather shady. Of course that was just looking at them driving through. Besides that one experience, I am basically judging off of what I hear and read. It seems to me that living there you would either be living somewhere nice(which would be extremely expensive) or somewhere with a lot of crime. Haha but even when I type that it still sounds just like you said, just like pretty much every major city.

I’m glad Ms. Emily was able to secure her permit. I like her modeling the right to defend oneself. (I also think she’s very attractive, but that’s given.)

Sparks

DataDawgWP…She’s holding a weapon? Who knew?

If anyone believes that Emily was granted permission based on anything other than Chief Lanier now being able to point to this very public test as proof that the DC carry requirements are legal during the next round of court cases, you’re sadly mistaken. I defy any one of us who have had threats against our lives and our family’s safety by someone living just outside the beltway to try to get a DC carry permit. Unless you’re well connected or can be an easy legal/PR tool for Lanier or Mayor Bowser, you’re going to be SOL.

Sparks

Bobo…I agree. While I am glad she got her permit, it will be a long time before number 17 gets one. Unless they are a legislator, judiciary, administration or former LE (whom I think can already carry) or anyone with power. Many of them are permitted on the QT so as to supposedly “protect their privacy and security”. There are very many concealed weapons in DC. Just being carried by private security for the rich and powerful or the rich and powerful themselves.

Sparks

P.S. If I am wrong folks…please correct me.

Hondo

Exactly. The only reason Ms. Miller got her permit was that she’s a very public figure – a prominent journalist.

Contrast her story with that of Stephen Gutowski of the Washington Free Beacon. His application was summarily denied, with no real reason given. And his justification seems no less valid than does Ms. Miller’s.

I’d bet one of her upcoming articles will address that. I think they may have given her one thinking she’d do a positive report. They are mistaken.

Hondo

I certainly hope you’re correct.

How NOBLE and ELITE of the DC bureaucrats to grant Ms Miller a PRELIMINARY APPROVED permit to exercise a God given inalienable right. (/sarc off)

With respect to gun permits, DC is kind of like New Jersey and New York and California. Seems to me that I read that there was a recent court decision in California changing them to a “shall issue” state but it is being appealed. Are chicago, new York, and new jersey as bad as DC or is there something special about DC? If special, is there a reason that I can understand or are they just dicks — or whatever you choose to call the police chief?

FatCircles0311

18 hours!

“Shall not be infringed”

AW1Ed

Great for Emily, I’ve been following her DC journey with interest, and wish her all the best. I live in Maryland, another “shall issue” state, and just received my carry license.
From Utah.

One of the most uneasy feeling places in DC is across the street from the White House in that park where all the homeless creeps live. Not a safe place to be at night. You think they could clean out the bums and make it safe to visit DC parks. Lot of creepy people hanging around, and I’m not talking just about the White House!
Everyone in DC needs a weapon for protection. Just remember that when you need help from the Cops, they’ll be there in 5, no 10, well maybe 15 minutes. Unless when you call 911 and it’s busy ….jimW. Beeeep beeeeep
And I was visiting on the 4th of July.

Bobo

That park is mild. Try walkng a few blocks from the Navy Yard after dark. Even Capitol Hill is getting a little dicy.
