Weekend Open Thread

Fresh veggies

I’ve had a couple of requests for an open thread for the weekend already. Ex-PH2 sends us a basket of fresh vegetables.

We tried something different to block some trolls and such and some of our regulars were blocked for a few minutes. If you have the same trouble, it wasn’t meant for you, trust me. Just email me your IP address and I’ll get my code monkey to straighten it out.

Enjoy.

Happy weekend everyone 😀

CWO5USMC

My wife and I are going to Vietnam in August for about three weeks. We’re flying into Hanoi and spending a few days there. After that, we’re catching a local flight to DaNang and spending a few days there. Finally, we’re catching another flight to Saigon and spending the remainder of our days before leaving country. My lovely wife was born just south of Saigon in 71 and left when she was six, having never returned until our upcoming trip. I know there’s alot of Vietnam Vets who read TAH, so if there are any good ideas from anyone who’s been back there recently or if I can grab a few photos of a certain region, just let me know and we can work out a way to get my email address to you. I’m currently out in 29 Palms on another exercise, so my responses may be a bit delayed. Have a great weekend folks.

Twist

Everything is going fine up here in Alaska. We are going to make an offer on a house on Monday. The kids fell in love with it and are already arguing on who gets what room.

SJ

The MGYSGT Bowden thread is disturbing, IMHO. A gent who made E8 in the Marines didn’t deserve this. Suggest some Hot Wash discussion on this in an open thread.

Sarasnipe

I feel sick, and I did not even participate in the dog pile. Can you imagine? When I am aged & infirm and I want to wear my uniform but I fuck it up somehow and get jumped on by everybody. How would that feel? Usually, I do try to stay out of it, I enjoy seeing those that deserve it get what they deserve when they ask for it. I started having misgivings about some of the ones that are clearly in a different world mentally ie. Downs syndrome kids, people with brain injuries etc… when I saw a picture of a guy wearing a jacked up SFC uniform on Mary’s site. At the time I just thought he was some clown being cute. After thinking about it a while, I started wondering he looked like an old friend of mine that was at Death’s door during that time. He has since recovered, and has been given a few more years to live (courtesy of a new liver). The picture has been taken down, and I cannot confirm whether it was him or not. During that time, I was on deployment and did not see him for quite some time. I see him all the time now, and have not asked him if it were him. If I could see that picture to confirm that it was him, I would definitely give him shit about it, but he would still be my friend, and maybe if I thought I were going to die within a few days, I might play dress up and impress people at Walmart too. SFC would not be my choice though, maybe an astronaut or fireman (the kind that ride on fire trucks, I already was a fireman in the USN).

SJ

Sarasnipe: thank you. Lot of emotion in what you painstakingly wrote. That wasn’t an easy write. I’m 72. I don’t have any uniforms left but then, I’m blessed with a fantastic family and don’t need to seek adulation.

I hate what happened to this career Marine. We stepped on our cranks. Thus the need for a hot wash and recalibrate.

BUT, I can see Chevy, Short Bus rider, Round Ranger, West-Coast-no-gas-in-the airplane-lawyer, et al salivating. Sorry guys: your shameful actions extend so far beyond this. You clowns are despicable and have been proven so.

Enigma4you

I have thought about the allot. We see pictures with little or no back story and everything points to a fake. Jonn does a fantastic job of picking who to put up and who not to. Other valor sites not so much. In the case of pictures only it is often more of a “has anyone else seen or do anyone know” type situation but without fail it turns into a feeding frenzy at times. In the case of the Mater Gunnery Sgt it started with a person trying to do an act of kindness for a stranger. It got taken from facebook to another Valor site. Within a day they had contact from him family and did a FOIA. It took three weeks for it to come back and pretty much validate what the family had said. Now everyone who was critical of him, with a few exceptions are still trying to make an issue out of how he wore his uniform and 2 medals. Now I dont know if he earned those Medals. I do know that he had a great career and its has been reported that he has Dementia/Alzheimer. It irritates me that the what ifs and maybes start. I have no reason to doubt his or his families honesty. I have no desire to see a man who serves his nation in a time of war further harmed. We talk about a pattern and profile for fakes and frauds. This man simply does not fit the pattern. there are some realities that have to be faced. He has every right to wear the uniform. While we would hope he would wear it properly I cannot fault him for how he had it on. I have seen Vets in parades get ovations who did not wear their uniform any where near as well as he did. We like to think that as a community we are never wrong when it come to stolen Valor. The truth is it happens. Not very often on this site but it does happen. Each case and each person has to… Read more »

Since TODAY is the Twenty-Fifth, I want to wish everyone a “MERRY CHRISTMAS ! ! !”

I can hardly wait to rush outside and go ice skating on the Gulf of Mexico!

John Robert Mallernee

Yesterday was PIONEER DAY, the 167th anniversary of when Brigham Young led the Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley.

Due to employment obligations, most Mormons will celebrate tomorrow.

I’m celebrating right NOW, awaiting delivery of my order from Domino’s Pizza:

43 years ago today my boots were on the ground in Cam Ranh Bay.

John Robert Mallernee

CONGRATULATIONS!

I arrived in Cam Ranh Bay on 12 December 1969.

I left from Da Nang on 21 February 1972.

3/17 Air Cav

Claw……forty three years ago, you were north of me. I was boots on the ground in Phu Loi.

My how time has passed quickly!

CLAW131

Yep,and my brother was also north of me at that time. He had already been in country about three months (on his second sight seeing tour) and was at Tuy Hoa with 1/22 IN,1st Field Force. But after going north to Phu Bai, then he was “down south” from me. In the few in country letters we wrote to each other I would refer to him as a Reb and he would call me a Damn Yankee. Ah,Brothers, gotta love em cause you can’t disown them.

Marine_7002

I’m waaaaaay out of town in Southern Utah (St George), volunteering at the Thunder Over Utah airshow. We have the Blue Angels, the Army’s Golden Knights, a TA-4, a red-tail P-51C, a T-6, a Twin Beech, an aerobatic act, one or more MIG-15s, some WW2 re-enactors with a Patton tank, a German tank and halftrack, and a 155 howitzer (!) all here. http://www.thunderoverutah.com Now if someone would just turn the thermostat down a bit…

AW1Ed

Man, I’ll never forget, in the pattern at NAS Patuxent River Maryland in the mighty P-3 Orion after the Cold War was done and gone, on final approach overhearing the tower state, “Juliette Alfa 05, you are number two behind the MiG-15 for landing.”
Just surreal.
And have a great air show!

John Robert Mallernee

Hey, you’re celebrating PIONEER DAY, the biggest holiday of the year in Utah, and throughout the Mormon church!

AW1Ed

Red letter day- both sons are home at the same time! One’s Air Force, the other Merchant Marine, so the planets don’t often align. They’re out tonight doing DC, so I don’t expect the see them again until the afternoon tomorrow. I have a Boston Butt all rubbed up in the reefer- the smoker lights off at 0500 tomorrow. Pulled pork sammiches will be served with North Carolina Clear Sauce, slaw, tater salad, baked beans, and sliced tomatoes. There will be beer and music. Key Lime pie and single barrel bourbon with stogies to follow.
That is all.

Enigma4you

Congrats and the menu sounds wonderful

OWB

Got some bread & butters pickles that just came out of the canner. If I leave now, might make it in time to set them on your table for the feast and reunion tomorrow!

Enjoy your time with your sons. And I dare you to sit down with all that wonderful food and not think about having had an offer for some really good home made pickles!

AW1Ed

Bring ’em on Big Cat, there’s plenty to be had and you’re more than welcome!
Mmmmm, pickles…

Guess I’ll have to make TWO Key lime pies, no problem.

Joe Williams

I suggest that you make at least two pies. Your sons will devour the home cooking. One pie each is more like it. Joe

AW1Ed

At least two! I know my sons well; doubtless they will bring along a couple lovely young women with them, no doubt enticed by my mad culinary skilz.
Or something.
😉

I thought I’d take this opportunity to say hello. I read this everyday but think I’ve only commented once or twice. 11B with the 101st 2000-2008. Just finished summer semester with a stastics final today and start fall semester in a few weeks. VFW district meeting tomorrow morning, I’m the district chaplain so I suppose I need to be there. I’m going to use my time off school to work on finishing the garage so no rest for me.

No, John we are standby status for when things really get bad. That is when our old skills will be needed. The Ugly Angels(HMM-362 was disbanded last August. My orginal MOS and Helo were gone. After leaving Nam they started flying the 53 and became HHM-362 until they folded their colors. Joe

SJ

Nah JRM. You did your duty and soldiers today benefit from what you did. After I left Phu Bai and the same Signal BN as you, I was on the Army Staff in the Pentagon. I personally briefed the Chief of Staff of the Army on cosmic commo technology: one was facsimile. It was a wet dream when I did that and now it has come and gone. The other was GPS…it has now exceeded anything we could have ever imagined. The third was a program in the 6.1 R&D thingy where we’d park a truck and GI’s could wander in the battlefield with a telephone like handset. He looked at me like I was an idiot…what I briefed is what became cell phones.

What you did in that suck hole dust filled repair shop at Eagle contributed hugely to combat operations in the Au Shau Valley and to lessons learned on that radio and MUX equipment. As the BDE SigO for the 3/82nd(ABN) and 1/101(ABN), I lived and died by making sure that commo was 5×5 from Eagle out to those Fire Bases for combat operations and Dustoff’s. Troopers like you made that happen. Soldiers that followed us benefited from what you did and don’t you forget it.

Sully

I’ll always be thankful for the generations that came before me and blazed the trail. I often think about the support mechanisms it took for us to do what we did. We were supported by some real professionals and it was you guys who set the standard for them. Thank you.

JONN LILYEA, Et Alii:

We really need an editing and/or deleting feature on this web site.

Then, I could dump the previous redundant comments.

Thank you.

John Robert Mallernee

Hip! Hip! Hooray!

Today is a MAJOR Communist holiday in Cube, commemorating the 61st anniversary of the failed Rebel attack on the Moncada Barracks, beginning Fidel Castro’s, “Movimiento 26 de Julio”,(i.e., the “Twenty-Sixth of July Movement”).

The rebel flag was red and black, with “M-26-7” on it.

At the time, I think I was ten years old, and in the Fourth (or Fifth?) Grade, at Spring Lake School in Spring Lake, North Carolina, and thus, can vaguely recall a couple of details about the Cuban revolution reported in the “WEEKLY READER” newspaper.

According to the “WEEKLY READER” (a weekly newspaper for elementary school students), Fidel Castro was the “George Washington” of Cuba, and if you’re in Cuba, don’t get caught driving a red and black automobile (a popular Ford color scheme!), and Fulgencio Batista was the corrupt dictator viciously oppressing the Cuban people.

Do any of you guys remember when all that was going on?

It’s featured in, “THE GODFATHER: PART II”.

Viva la Revolution!

(Yeah, I’m just having a bit of fun!)

At the “CHICAGO SUN-TIMES” newspaper’s web site, the “SATURDAY STUMPER” crossword puzzle is especially good.

It took me exactly two (02) hours to solve it, without searching the Internet for answers to any of the clues, nor did I use the crossword puzzle’s answer checking feature.

I did the whole thing with just my brain.

It was tough, and I began having doubts about whether I would solve it without resorting to using either the Internet, a dictionary, or the crossword puzzle’s answer checking feature.

But, that’s how I like my crossword puzzles – – – , i.e., tough and mentally challenging.

If you’re interested, here’s the URL for today’s “SATURDAY STUMPER” crossword puzzle at the “CHICAGO SUN-TIMES” newspaper’s web site:

At the “MERRIAM-WEBSTER” dictionary’s web site, I also did the “CROSS WINDER” word puzzle:

And, I did the “UNIVERSAL CRYPTOGRAM”:

And finally, I did my favorite “MERRIAM-WEBSTER” puzzle, the “DICTIONARY DEVIL”:

Also, don’t forget this weekend’s crossword puzzles at the “WASHINGTON POST” and “LOS ANGELES TIMES” newspaper web sites.

Y’all have fun, now!

I certainly did.

From my connections at CIA, NSA, PMS, DIA, NBA, NRA, PGA and other classerfried sources:

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake, which struck the southeast coast of Alaska early Friday morning, caused little or no surface damage but it appears to have affected internet and cellular service for residents in southeastern communities.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 Alaska Power & Telephone customers are without internet and cellular service and the company speculates that a major underwater fiber optic cable near Juneau was affected.  AP&T is one of the primary internet and cell providers for Haines, Skagway, and other small southeastern communities.

“It sounds like the majority of our southeast Alaska customers are affected because, I believe, that particular highway was our primary link between Seattle and Alaska to the rest of the world,” an AP&T spokesman said. “So, at this point you basically have a lot of the carriers—long distance and data carriers—scrambling to reroute and talking to each other to determine how best to get that accomplished in the shortest time frame.”

The fiber optic cable is owned by Alaska Communication Services (ACS) but is used by several providers, including AP&T. ACS has not released any details of the outage or an exact cause, except to say it is working to restore service. There was no information from AP&T or ACS about how long the outage might last.

John Robert Mallernee

I know this is going to come as a shock to most of you here…Hamas has resumed its rocket attacks. Good job dipshit Kerry you worthless pathetic fuck. Ditto. Hamas rejected Israel’s truce offers. Am I supposed to feel sympathy for them? I don’t.

What is it with this rabid animal behavior these (Hamas & others) people are displaying? Who is motivating them? They’re too stupid to cook it up themselves.

Ex-PH2: from what I’ve seen, IMO that idiocy is 100% natural and home-grown. They may be getting financial and other support from outside, but the Hamas leadership IMO really is willing to mix it up with Israel regardless of the damage they sustain.

Mustang1LT

You know, this whole State Department keeps fucking up royally and our personnel are getting run out of everywhere. I can’t believe the ineptitude, cowardice, and lack of leadership. Right now, more than ever, we need that “Man On A Horse”. I am at a loss for words. What have we sacrificed for these past 13 years? How can the sacrifice of our brothers and sisters be tossed aside so cheaply? We stand ready and will carry out what is asked of us no matter the cost, however there is no one at the wheel. These are grave times indeed. Benjamin Franklin would be rolling in his grave for now is the time for our generation to “keep” the Republic or lose it forever and once again consign the world to the darkness that seems its natural state. Looking at history, it seems that barbarism is the natural order of things except for brief moments when civilization holds sway. I fear that if we don’t stop this now, human freedom will die out again and may not return from a new Dark Age ruled by savages with modern weapons and the will to terrorize those who would stand against them.

OWB

Amen, brother! Fortunately, at least this time around, we infidels still have some very smart people on our side, and plenty who are willing to continue to fight the good fight in spite of the ignorance of others.

Salt and Pepper to taste

I’m starving here, and I have no shrimp. I do have chicken, however.

The deer and horse flies have arrived at FOB. What do I do now?

The leader keeps stinging me on the same exact place on the back of my head.

OVER and out!

Ex-PH2

Bug spray, Master Chief. By bug spray, I mean repellent like Deep Woods Off! Burn some citronella candles.

Those flies love sweat and blood. They will drain you dry. 🙂

An interesting article in today’s Washington Post. Military folks getting hustled by easy credit companies? Say it isn’t so.

Reminds me of the Devon Home Furniture stores that only seem to be set outside of military installations.

Speaking of stupid…I’m squeezing another season of life out of my charcoal grille and it breaks. The legs are gone. So, I improvise. I take the legs, place them under a metal rack atop a section of plywood, the grille sits on the rack, and the whole mess sits on a metal chair. What could go wrong? I light the Kingsford, go to the store, return, and instead of smelling charcoal, I am smelling burning wood. The plywood is engulfed. Thankfully, it was not bear the house, garage, or shed–and a garden hose was a few feet away.

CAV … I am a Weber man.

I was taught the “Ways of Weber” when I lived in SD and I never considered any other form of BBQing.

The standard Weber can last 20 to 30 years if you hose it out after each or every other use, apply the standard MIL SPEC wire brush when needed, and store it off season.

So how and why do know this?

I still use a 1989 Weber I purchased in SD. Replace wheels, wooden lid handle and made it taller with 3/4 inch conduit.

Just sayin’.

Just wanted to let you folks know that some parts of America are still working fine without Facebook, cell phones, pierced nipples and baggy pants. At the county fair back in rural Indiana where I’m originally from, the Grand Champion Cross Bred Barrow (that’s a full grown bacon seed (Hog) was sold at buyer’s auction for $3,001.50. It weighed in at 261 and sold for $11.50 a pound. The hog belonged to the little 4-H gal that is the grand daughter of a high school classmate of mine. Also, the kiss from the newly crowned county queen went to the highest bidder for $1,200.00. Yep, it’s still the kind of place where the youngsters still address their elders as Sir and Ma’am and are seen but not heard.
