Two Trident Group SEALs found dead on Maersk Alabama

| February 19, 2014

A Fox News link sent to us by Chip reports that two former SEALs, currently employed by the Trident Group were found dead on the container ship, Maersk Alabama, made famous by the movie “Captain Phillips” and the SEAL operation which freed the captain on Easter morning five years back.

The company said families of the two contractors have been notified and requested that their names not be released.

A spokesman from the shipping line only confirmed that two people had been found dead, citing the ongoing investigation.

[…]

The Maersk Alabama had been docked in Victoria, Seychelles, which is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

I’m sure there’s a longer version of the story somewhere.

UPDATE: From CNN:

Police in the Seychelles said the two men were part of a 24-member crew that arrived on Sunday and were expected to leave Tuesday. The two men worked for Trident Security Firm USA, police said.

[…]

The bodies were found by a colleague who went to check in on one of the men in a cabin at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Seychelles police said.

From The Virginian-Pilot;

Police said that Americans Jeffrey Reynolds and Mark Kennedy, both aged 44, were found dead Tuesday in Kennedy’s cabin on board the ship, as it was docked at Port Victoria in the capital.

[…]

The company said the cause of the deaths was under investigation but they were “not related to vessel operations or their duties as security personnel.”

I will look for the longer version.

I only found the same info in a Dutch site. …so far

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

If not gun, poisoning or drugs.

Sad!

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Carbon monoxide perhaps!

I don’t like this one bit. Former SEALs killed on a ship that was the focus of a SEAL operation?

Sounds like someone wanted some payback.

Just An Old Dog

Ships are just flat out dangerous places at times. It could have been some type of firearms mishap, but more than likely an accident dealing with bad ventilation or a fall.

I was also thinking the same thing…..carbon monoxide, industrial accident or the like. Could have been one brother trying to save another in some kind of incident and they both perished together.
Sad either way.

Green Thumb

Sad.

Two words: enclosed space.

Sea School for MARDET before they would allow us on board.

And they heavily emphasized the OBA requirement before attempting any form of rescue.

@12: Well, that raises more questions than it answers.

Is it a dry country?

I heard horror stories about a couple of airmen conducting field day in a working space on the USS Forrestal. They took a short cut and used Trichlorotrifluoroethane (FREON)to strip the deck of wax and displaced all the oxygen in the space and were found dead by another shipmate.

Dude. That ship seems cursed. If I was a merchant seaman, and someone offered me a contract to work on the Maersk Alabama, I think I would politely decline.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if that ship hit an iceberg in the Gulf of Aden, or got torpedoed by a WWI German U-Boat or whatever.

@3 Concur, Master Chief. Occam’s Razor, and a shame.

My son #2 is in the Merchant Marine, and has shipped on Maersk vessels. His take on movie is much like my mine on Top Gun: low comedy at best.

More…but no more answers but the article uses the words “sudden death”

This is a shame for two honorable men to pass this way. But that is the problem now. In what “way” did they die?

Ex-PH2

Only one was an ex-SEAL, per this story. http://news.msn.com/us/navy-man-who-died-on-ship-off-africa-an-ex-seal

There is still no cause of death released as yet. Best not to speculate for the time being.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

There is no speculation.

Considering the circumstances … The choices are few.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

Air (carbon monoxide), food (poison), drugs (bad heroin).

If a gun was involved … Accident/Suicide. However that is highly unlikely. But possible.

Although drugs is my first guess … Industrial accident is a second best explanation.
