Arrest of mayoral candidate, for assaulting a federal agent, called threat to democracy
Brad Lander, New York Comptroller, is also running for New York Mayor. He allegedly assaulted a federal officer and ended up getting arrested. Charges were dropped against Landers as the U.S. Attorney’s Office is still investigating his actions. Donna Lieberman, executive director for the New York Civil Liberties Union, claimed that Lander’s arrest was based on his asking questions. Lieberman further claimed that this arrest was a threat to democracy.

New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman said the arrest, which she claimed was motivated by Lander “asking questions,” was an abuse of power and a threat to democracy.
“Arresting a public official, the duly-elected comptroller of the City of New York, for asking questions is dangerous intimidation and shows a wanton disregard for the will of the people of New York,” Lieberman wrote in a statement. “It sends an unmistakably authoritarian message — that ICE doesn’t care about the rule of law and that anyone exercising their right to challenge ICE and speak up for immigrants will be punished. All elected officials and candidates for office should condemn this arrest in the strongest terms and stand up for New Yorkers.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James described Lander’s actions as “standing up for immigrants.”
“This is profoundly unacceptable,” James wrote in a statement. “Arresting Comptroller Lander for the simple act of standing up for immigrants and their civil rights is a shocking abuse of power. No one should face fear and intimidation in a courthouse, and this is a grotesque escalation of tensions. The administration’s rampant targeting of New Yorkers only makes our communities less safe.”
Other public officials took to social media to react to the high-profile arrest.
“This is the latest example of the extreme thuggery of Trump’s ICE out of control — one can only imagine the fear families across our country feel when confronted with ICE,” former New York Governor and NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo wrote on X. “Fear of separation, fear of being taken from their schools, fear of being detained without just cause. This is not who we are. This must stop, and it must stop now.”

Five years ago all of the teenaged kids decided to follow the trend and declare themselves transgender in order to gain a bit of attention. Now we have politicians interfering with immigration enforcement in order to get places in handcuffs and gain some “street cred” within the Democrat Party.
Last week a politician who said that he was the “guardian” of a 21 year old illegal immigrant called for a flash mob to riot in order to prevent his boy Roy from being taken into custody.

Charges weren’t dropped, they are pending investigation.
Trying to prevent a lawful arrest through passive resistance is still resistance and obstruction. However I say keep it up, that way we know who you are and what you stand for.
The trend in reporting is that that Brad Lander showed up in court based on charges that he assaulted a federal agent. He could face those charges based on preliminary findings, or he could face them latter after an investigation provides a more thorough argument. It may be that the prosecution decided to pull the charges until they could complete that investigation, just to have the Democrats claim, without providing context, that the charges were dropped with no pending investigation or potential charges being brought against him later.

IMO dropping the charges was the atty gen deciding to throw the ICE agent(s) under the bus. There really shouldn’t be much more in the way of “investigation” to do unless the atty merely wants to take tie to view body camera footage or subpoena media footage.
Saying you were just “asking questions” is a play on words to gain sympathy. The time to ask questions is after the actions are over and not during an arrest where the “questioner” is actually interfering in an arrest as a means of passive confrontation.
I hope the prosecutor builds a good case or there will be more “asking questions” during ICE operations as a means of interference in enforcement actions. Anything to keep ICE / Trump from removing dems power grab.

I got out in ’87, and I was retro-fitting hotels, and apt/condos with fires sprinkler systems in Miami/Dade & Broward County for about year. I didn’t see many/any illegals working on job-sites. Maybe as laborers, but none of the trades.
Anything that involves an actual license is a bit tougher to get into. But around here they will pay around $30/hr to anyone that will swing a hammer, stack block or lay tile. That may seem like a lot but the average hourly wage in the US is now $36.
Shop time at a garage is now around $125/hr for small engines and $150 for bigger ones.
They were just starting to come in then.
