Man dead after attempted carjacking in Cooper-Young

by: Megan Fayard, Harrison Klopp
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after an attempted carjacking at a Midtown gas station on Monday morning, according to the Memphis Police Department.

The MPD responded to the shooting at 2:16 a.m. at a gas station on East Parkway and Young Avenue, across the street from the Liberty Bowl. A man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Preliminary information shows this was the result of an attempted carjacking.

Police said the suspect in the case was the person who was shot. It was unclear whether he was shot by the victim or another person.

“I love this city, but I’m disappointed in what’s happening here,” said one former Cooper-Young resident.

“Well, this is Memphis, this is Memphis, you gotta keep your head on a swivel, you gotta be aware of your surroundings, I guess that’s anywhere on earth, but it’s kinda prominent in Memphis. You gotta keep your head on a swivel,” said another Cooper-Young resident.

The Navy’s schoolhouse for aspiring AW’s was located just outside of Memphis years ago. The place was sketchy then, too. Thanks Gun Bunny.

I tried being reasonable, I didn’t like it.

Perp tried to pay the FA card, and got soundly trumped by the FO card.

Been a loooong minute since I had to go thru Memphis. Had family that relocated there back in the mid-60s that realized in the early 70s it was time to move across the border to Mississippi, tho they still had to work in town. My last trip thru was in 2015 and I purposely laid over in Jonesboro AK and timed my trip thru to be about 10ish in the morning and only stopped for fuel in a very busy truck stop on the outskirts. Even that early of a mid morning it was sketchy as all hell. Strange how removing the gravesite of Bedford and his wife didn’t solve all the problems of that sh*thole. If we were posting stories of crime instead of FGS, this page would be filled everyday.

I don’t think its unreasonable for people to do things my way and being damned quick about it.

Just cause its built like a 1911, looks like a 1911, and kinda sorta works like a 1911, if it is not in His Holy Caliber of .45, it is NOT a 1911.

Hopefully, the new Ms Thang Chancre Mechanic I’m gonna see today can make me feel good. But then again…Hope is no battle plan. See y’all this pm.

I was seriously considering this 2311 as something interesting until I finally got to the bottom of the article and read that it was chambered for 9mm. No wonder QA was able to safely make all those changes to St JMB greatest creation. 45ACP vs 9mm. Stronger vs weaker. No gonna argue effectiveness, just recoil strength. Nope, that 2311 can just fade into the background with all the other 1911 clones in 9mm.

So what makes it a 2011 or 2311? Is it just some random person says ” Well, we started with a 1911…then we changed it…!”?

Several of our compatriots are older than the Interstate highway system. As a child in the 1950s my family traveled quite a bit, at least annually between Texas and Pennsylvania.

Those trips were largely on US Highways with frequent excursions on state, county and municipal roads. Memphis was a regular waypoint, right through downtown.

It was a pretty city, parkways, gardens, signs of prosperity but definitely a community. Until “something” happened and the people who made Memphis such a quaint southern venue decided to move.

I’ve been back several times over the years and still look forward to stopping off at local BBQ joints. I don’t stop there at night.

Still use the US highways when touring about on the motorcycle and often look for the slowest and longest way to go just about anywhere.

My brother is 10 years younger and won’t ride with me anymore. He’s still in a hurry to get somewhere. I like that start the day off somewhere, go somewhere else for awhile until I get there and then spend the night there 🙂

I remember when Texas highways were the fastest ways to get around.
They were 2 lane (1 each direction), no median, had maybe 10′ to the trees on the shoulders.
Spent many a mile laying on the shelf under the back window watching the stars overhead.
I’d hate to see todays’ traffic (and drivers) attempt to drive those roads. The gene pool would rapidly get significantly smaller.

Just saw 2 stories involving JBLM in the local paper online:
