Shots fired, suspect injured during Lakeview Drive truck theft Thursday morning

A vehicle theft suspect ended up at Swedish Edmonds Hospital after being shot by the truck owner’s relative while leaving the scene in the 23000 block of Lakeview Drive in Mountlake Terrace Thursday morning.

Mountlake Terrace Police Cmdr. Scott King said the suspect was in the process of stealing a truck around 4:30 a.m. Thursday and was confronted by the truck owner’s relative. The thief pointed a pistol at the relative in response, but the relative was also armed with a handgun and fired at the suspect.

The person stealing the truck was successful and drove away, not to freedom, but to the hospital.

“A short time later, we received a report of a subject at Swedish Edmonds with gunshot wounds,” King said. “Investigators were able to determine this subject was the person who stole the truck.”

He didn’t get to enjoy the stolen truck very much. Hardly seems worth it, getting shot and all.

17-year-old boy opens fire on Columbus police responding to domestic violence call

Bailey Gallion, Columbus Dispatch
Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to reflect additional information.
Columbus police took a teenager into custody Thursday morning after he exchanged gunshots while fleeing officers in the Driving Park neighborhood.

Neither the officers nor the male juvenile, whom The Dispatch is only identifying as a 17-year-old, were struck by gunfire, police said in a news release.

Police responded just before 11 a.m. to a gun-related domestic violence incident in the 1000 block of Lockbourne Road in which the teen boy was accused of threatening to shoot his girlfriend.

When officers arrived, police said the teen fired at them with a rifle and then ran away. The teen disappeared for a time, but when officers found him a short time later in an alley, the youth once again fired at police and struck their cruiser multiple times. Multiple officers fired back at the teen as he again fled on foot.

The teen was eventually taken into custody in the 1200 block of East Columbus Street. A rifle was recovered from a nearby rooftop near where the teen was arrested with the help of the police helicopter unit and a Columbus Division of Fire ladder truck. A handgun also was recovered by police in the 1000 block of Studer Avenue.

The teenager was taken to a hospital for a medical check after complaining of chest pain, then was later taken to police headquarters. He is expected to initially face a juvenile charge of assault on a police officer, and will likely face additional charges as the investigation progresses.

The suspect has a prior juvenile criminal history.
