Veteran, previously court-martialed for killing Iraqi civilian, sentenced for his role in the J6 Capitol riot

Edward Richmond Jr, 41, was sentenced for his role in the Capitol riot of January 6, 2021. Richmond wore tactical gear that included a helmet and goggles. He was among those striking police officers at an entrance. In 2004, Richmond killed a handcuffed Iraqi civilian. He subsequently got court-martialed, got incarcerated at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and then received a dishonorable discharge.

From AP News:

Richmond was wearing a helmet, goggles and other military-style tactical gear when he attended then-President Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House on Jan. 6. After marching to the Capitol, he joined other rioters in a “heave ho” push against police officers guarding a tunnel entrance.

Richmond carried a police shield into the crowd and then returned to the mouth of the tunnel, where he attacked officers with a retractable metal baton, hitting their shields.

Before leaving, Richmond passed along a wooden board for rioters to use against police as a makeshift weapon. He also carried out office furniture from a broken window.

“He pumped it up in the air several times over his head and shouted, drawing huge cheers from the crowd and spurring the rioters on in their violent attack against police,” a prosecutor wrote.

Richmond was arrested in January and pleaded guilty to an assault charge in August.

Richmond was 20 when an Army court-martial panel convicted him of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced him to three years of military confinement for killing a handcuffed Iraqi civilian near Taal Al Jai in February 2004. Richmond was incarcerated at Fort Sill in Oklahoma and also received a dishonorable discharge from the Army.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Clearly this person is not playing with a full deck, but he’ll be used as an example of what all President Trump’s supporters/military veterans are like: unhinged and violent with no regards to the rule of law.

Green Thumb

Loser.

“He also carried out office furniture from a broken window”

I guess that’s a nice way of saying he threw a chair through
a window?

KoB

A POS through and through! Maybe they shoulda threw him in a chair…a chair named “Old Sparky”?

Jimbojszz

Killing your prisoner with handcuffed hands is murder. He should still be in prison. Just a bad apple, rotten to the core. The dude is unhinged and a menace to society. Your right about starting “Old Sparky” up for this dude.

Never heard the word “stealing” used so nicely. Perhaps he was a furniture resource limited person?

26Limabeans

I can just picture him as a furniture salesman on tv back in
the 60’s 70’s when the furniture and mattress business was
rivaled only by car dealers.
I could name a few but they may still be in business….

Once a turd criminal, almost always a turd criminal….

I’d like to know the circumstances surrounding his execution of the handcuffed individual. I’m not saying he might have been right for doing what he did, but the details may considerably humanize his actions….

I remember, early in the war, hearing some scuttlebutt about a soldier killing a detained individual in Iraq: He was patrolling a bazaar and someone threw oil on a female member of his team, then lit her on fire. He helped put out the fire while others on his team ran down and caught the blackguard. While the medics treated the women, they brought the individual back to the AA. Unfortunately, she did not survive the attack and, upon learning such, this joe pulled out his sidearm and executed the prisoner – the wrong thing to do, but perfectly understandable in the moment. I could also see him having an extreme reaction to what many see as an existential threat to our country after he’s been at the mercy of those who insist he’s nothing but a criminal.

I have no idea how much, if any, of that story is true (nor am I suggesting that the individual in the article was the same guy) – I’m just saying that we are all human and he may not be the monster he seems at first blush.

Army- Air Force Guy

If I woulda been in that guy’s squad I would’ve told them “must’ve had my head turned- I didn’t see anything.”

The court martial likely agreed as he only got three years for murder. Still, you would think he would have learned a lesson about a avoiding trouble.

Hate_me

Again, I’m not suggesting his situation was the same as the story, but I’m not sure I would have learned any such lesson, in such shoes.

Three years incarceration, a DD and everything that comes with it (no firearms, no vote, no benefits, very few options beyond shit jobs, etc.), dismissed by the country I love….

Avoiding trouble seems like a bitch move when the status quo is little beyond shame and stigma.

5JC

Sounds good till you go back to prison.

I’m not saying it’s the best approach to a happy life, but when happiness seems forevermore beyond one’s reach, revolution becomes much more appealing.

It doesn’t seem any less reasonable than rebelling over a 2% tax on tea.

5JC

The Tea Act actually made tea cheaper in the US. The reformed taxes were them used to pay the British Governors and other officials. The problem was that there were a lot of tea smugglers in the colonies who were being undercut by the way the tax was collected. They were the instigators behind the protests. A lot of people simply didn’t want to be rules by the empire any longer.

Funny how the whole picture gets lost when important details are left out of the frame, eh?

THAT boy is at least eleven cards shy of a dozen.

But I bet he got his free Slurpee from 7-11 on Veterans Day for his service to our nation…..

You know what I think?

Let him go.
This entire situation just sounds like the U.S. Government taking after one citizen.

So, fuck the goddamn government.
