Drag show ban complicates Pride celebrations at US bases in Japan

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — Canceling drag shows on U.S. military bases constitutes discrimination and misinterprets an art form that’s been part of the military for more than 100 years, according to event organizers at installations in Japan.
President Joe Biden’s administration banned drag shows on U.S. military bases on June 1, the start of Pride Month, following criticism from Republican lawmakers amid a general campaign against LGBTQ+ events, The Associated Press reported.
Hosting drag shows is inconsistent with regulations governing the use of Defense Department resources, according to a statement from Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh on June 1.
“Enacting this policy on the first day of Pride Month truly added insult to injury,” said Xander Ready, president of Out in Oki, a private organization registered with the 18th Force Support Squadron at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa.
The ‘Out in Oki’ folks were forced to move the venue from the base Officer’s Club. The humanity! This is Pulitzer level stuff and Stars and Stripes is there.

Personally I agree with the ban. I don’t see any relationship requirement between “drag shows” and the mission of any of the Military branches.
When it comes down to it the Veterans who actually serve the nation get only about 3 days of recognition for their service and in too many cases sacrifice. Why the hell do deviants deserve a month of recognition and celebration? Also why do they think they deserve to push their “ideology” onto others, especially children, with govt funding and assistance?
If you can’t have the ladies from the Pink Pony or Cheetah Lounge practice their “art form” on base, then you can’t have a drag show either.

It seems to me that ANYONE can cite discrimination, against ANYTHING that does not follow their personal views, practices, beliefs, etc. there is a time and a place for everything. I don’t see how drag shows during the work day or at school provide a return investment for the salary earned or the education expected. If a little more time was spent on working and/or learning, we might have avoided the mess that we now find ourselves in.
Drag is not a federally-protected class.

The Power that Be put a stop to strippers in the Clubs/On Base decades ago as they appealed to the Prurient interests of some and offended others so were contrary to good order and discipline. I believe the same can be said of drag shows, so why are we allowing them?
Steam & Creams were also cancelled on military bases in Korea. I arrived at Camp Casey in 1988 and was told they were cancelled a year or two prior.
Got the same story at Camp Humphreys in ‘88. Although… we still had dancers at the NCO club.

Oh no, but the strong tradition of male Service Members dressing in drag to entertain themselves and each other throughout history is at risk! I’ve read a number of comments and articles elsewhere. The thing is, while drag has been used to lighten the mood in the past, in the military, Hollywood, and elsewhere, there is a key difference between a young Soldier or Sailor putting on a wig and dress along with a little makeup and parodying the girls back home that are so missed and what passes for drag today. We do silly things, and the majority of Service Members are young, or at least young at heart.
Today’s drag queens are a whole different matter. Rather than over-the-top silliness that’s mostly PG-rated at most, they put the words “Service” and “Member” together in the most sexually vulgar and offensive way imaginable. I have few doubts that a lot of these caricatures would render services to a willing (or even unwilling) person regardless of their age, and too many of them are eager to flash their members.
A lot of drag queens might be having fun and may not experience any gratification, but nowadays we have the Agenda that forces LBGTQ ideologies on our children, and which wishes to shame the stereotypical alpha male military man into accepting those unfit for sustained combat service. First, it was DADT, then women in Combat Arms followed shortly by DOD’s embracing the trans community and a few “Stunning and Brave women” coming out. Funny how there’s not much publication of trans men setting new standards in the military or athletics.

In my very humble opinion, ninja, the best recruiting tool that Navy ever had was a documentary (or two) that was produced showing the glory of Naval Aviation. The Documentary made an impact to goose certain mavericks, that wanted to fly into a danger zone, into putting any thoughts of joining another branch on ice, man. Wearing dark glasses in a club, playing volley ball on the beach, and finding a loving feelin’ beat a full tank of gas and a half of pack of cigarettes driving to Chicago all to hell.

Drag shows as adult entertainment is fine, it can be really fun. It’s not for children. Would we allow pole-dancer story hour in our libraries? How about we have NAMBLA storytime? My dad was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He was in Air Force Intelligence, and I never knew what he did. I’m pretty sure he’s not just turning over in his grave; he’s most likely spinning around like a damn gyroscope. I’ll check for soil disturbances the next time I go to Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
