Woman Pleads Guilty in Stolen Valor Case
A Georgia woman has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from lying about a Purple Heart as well as lying about her daughter having cancer.

LAVONIA, Ga. — A woman serving as a Veterans of Foreign Wars commander in Georgia was sentenced to prison on charges of impersonating a military veteran, forgery and first-degree cruelty to children.
Gabrielle Beutler pleaded guilty Wednesday in Franklin County, Georgia, after she lied on the paperwork she submitted to join the Lavonia VFW, WYFF reported.
Beutler was also accused of altering documents so that she would be promoted within the VFW, and used false documentation to get Purple Heart license plates for her vehicles, The Hartwell Sun reported. Beutler allegedly told people that she had been injured by an improvised explosive device while serving in Afghanistan and was a Purple Heart recipient.
“This individual had, in fact, altered and fabricated information on her form,” Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle told WYFF. “She reported she had been injured in the military to the extent of losing a leg in the military, when in fact, I believe it was determined she had never made it out of basic training.”
Beutler was sentenced to two years in prison, to be followed by 15 years of probation, and was also ordered to pay restitution, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. The amount of restitution has yet to be determined.
Prosecutors said that while acting as post commander of the VFW, Beutler lied about her daughter having terminal cancer, going so far as to shave the 9-year-old’s head, WYFF reported.
How does one get away with claiming they lost a leg when they didn’t? That’s a head-scratcher.

Decades ago, there was a “Doonesbury” cartoon that summed it up (yes, Garry Trudeau is a hard lefty, but even he occasionally called a spade a spade.) I can’t remember the exact context or words, but it went something like this:

The only “mental disorders” this woman suffered were (a) greed and (b) lack of conscience.

I thought the vetting process went like this: “your check/credit card payment cleared. Welcome to the VFW!”

What a YUTZ!
You know, it’s fine to “name and shame” Beutler for her lies, but I’d like to see the paperwork she submitted to the VFW to gain membership and hear from the other officers in that post who let her in.
Because liars gonna lie, and fakers gonna fake, especially if there’s money to be had. But they can only fake with either the willing assistance of the VFW post or by their utter incompetence.
Unless Beutler was some kind of master forger (and I’m going to guess she’s not quite Rocket Scientist material since she apparently couldn’t even make it out of basic training) then the answer as to how she got into her VFW post has to be either gross incompetence by whoever was in charge of vetting the vets, or that they allowed her to slide in on a nudge and a wink because she paid her money and they needed the membership numbers.
So it was either negligence or complicity. There is no third option.

I read elsewhere that she altered a DD214 she came across while she worked (volunteered?) at a VA Hospital, and submitted it as her own. If I can find that, I’ll post it.
I wonder when the VFW and Al will realize that these “stolen valor” claims are an existential threat to their organizations?
It’s like the water wearing away at the base of a rock tower. Little by little, every time one of these fakers gets busted while holding a high ranking position in a VSO, it undermines and chips away at the credibility they’ve built up since WW1.
Almost every issue of a VFW or Legion magazine laments the unwillingness of younger vets to join, but what are they offering? A magazine full of ads for Old People products? A reputation as an “old man’s drinking club? A place for valor vultures to burnish their fake credentials?
The question isn’t “why aren’t more younger veterans joining?” it’s “why in God’s name would ANY veteran want to join?”
Clean up your act, VSOs! Or, just admit that you are no longer worthy of respect and go quietly into that good night.
