Marine Corps Osprey crashes in Southern California desert

| June 9, 2022

Jeff LPH 3 sends in word of another Marine Corps tilt-rotor going down. From Marine Corps Times;

A Marine Corps aircraft crashed Wednesday in the Southern California desert and civilian and military emergency crews were responding, but there were no immediate details about those on board, the military said.

The MV-22B Osprey belonged to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Camp Pendleton, California, and went down at 12:25 p.m. during training, said Maj. Mason Englehart, spokesman for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, an aviation unit headquartered at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, about 115 miles west of the crash site near the community of Glamis in Imperial County.

The tilt-rotor aircraft can take off and land as a helicopter but transit as a turboprop aircraft.

Englehart said he had no further details yet to release about the five Marines who were on board.

Praying for good news, but that they aren’t saying anything leads me to fear the worst.

Our hearts and prayers goes out to their families and love ones. Sparks is correct when he wrote “Training for war is as dangerous as war.”

So Sad.

I am so sorry to read this ninja. I did not know at the time of my post.

God keep them and bless their families now.

None of us knew.

The updated article was posted on the Marine Corps Times way after your comment. When I provided the update and link, it was only 5 minutes old.

ninja,
Not much to recover.
Some news articles have a crash scene photo,
and it looks like a vertical drop,
with 1 rotor blade off to the side.

This is the area where my son learned
to land and take off in the “brown”,
0 visibility due to dirt and sand,
instruments only.

RIP x5.

Graybeard

Prayers for the families – biological and military.

RIP Warriors. God’s Peace bring His Comfort to their Families and Compatriots.

Wanna place $ on the “investigation” showing pilot error? We all know that maintenance needs haven’t been ignored or training hours used up in other more important lessons. And it’s not like the Osprey has a record of crashes.

Mick

I was offered the opportunity to fly in an MV-22 shortly before I retired from the Marine Corps.

I refused.

Sapper3307

RIP.
Slow salute.

Is it just me or are those Osprey’s not that safe? Someone with flying knowledge told me one of the worst things about them is that they cannot auto rotate to a safe landing. I saw a -46 do it once. It sure wasn’t soft, but everybody walked away, and the airframe wasn’t a right off.

MarineDad61

HT3,
Problematic 10-15 years ago,
but with a long recent good track record of safety and success.
2 crashes in 2022,
1 in the frigid mountains,
and now 1 in the “brown” of 0 visibility dirt/sand.
Bad (tragic) year for an overall fine aircraft.

This is my son, on his 1st public exhibition airshow flight.

Excellent zoom and camera work by the TV station.
