Licensed Guides at Gettysburg raise alarm of “major threat” to Civil War monuments

| August 8, 2020

Battle of Gettysburg

CBS21 reports that the Licensed Battlefield Guides at Gettysburg have sounded the alarm regarding the House of Representatives assault on history. Specifically the House-passed bill would remove all Confederate monuments, statues, and commemorative plaques that help guide visitors through the historic battlefield.

From the article;

“We urge the U.S. Senate to strip out this provision that would destroy the unequaled collection of monuments, Union and Confederate, that set Gettysburg apart as a great battlefield park and a top visitor destination,” said Les Fowler, president of the Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides.

According to Fowler, the legislation in question, HR-7608, would direct the National Park Service to remove all Confederate monuments, memorials, placards and statues at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Antietam, Chickamauga, Manassas, Petersburg, Fredericksburg and 18 other battlefields and historic sites within six months.

Fowler says that these Civil War battlefields and their monuments and interpretive plaques have been preserved to help Americans and foreign guests visualize and understand the terrible ordeal that forged this nation. The monuments at Gettysburg from both sides allow us to interpret this national struggle for freedom as it continues today.

“The monuments representing all of the soldiers who fought here are a critical component of interpreting these sacred grounds,” Fowler said. Veteran battlefield guide Deb Novotny said, “The monuments serve as tools for us to tell the story not only of this battle but of the struggle of our nation to heal itself after the war.”

As George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

I think those that willfully and purposefully destroy the past are intending to repeat it.

Kind of hard to teach history without the historical facts.

Dastardly, evil racist RepubliKKKans wanted to keep slavery for Capitalism, but the valiant Democrats (Vote Joe 2020!) stopped it, you see…

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day be day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except the endless present in which the party is always right.” –George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four

May the Spirits of the Dead haunt these destroyers of our history for all eternity.

As I have posted/commented before, if you want to see these type of War Memorials/Battlefield Parks, you better hurry up. The domestic enemies of our Republic know that in order to fully destroy us, they must also destroy the history.

It was bad enough when we had to fight off the developers attempting to destroy these sites.

I’ll just leave this here as one example:

I personally view those who want and try to rewrite and “sanitize” American History to their liking as I do the Nazis and Communists who did so in other nations, little more than sniveling little useful idiots doing the bidding of their herders and handlers.

Ex-PH2

Well, API, if they really want a knockdown drag-out fight, they should be careful what they wish for. It might happen.

I also cook, you know.

RGR 4-78

History is not neat and clean, it is disorderly and at times, downright nasty.

It should be taught and remembered that way.

Learn from your mistakes or repeat them at your peril.

Combat Historian

Demonrats attempting to erase and whitewash (pun intended?) their previous history of slavery, racism, and treason all the way from the Capital building to the smallest battlefield. No surprises here…

Just Lurkin

Up next-the monuments to the 7th Cav will be removed from Little Big Horn.

Ex-PH2

Santayana’s right: delete history and you’ll repeat it ad nauseum until there is nothing left.

The ignorance of that crowd of yahoos on the Lefterd side of the fence is wide, deep and full of mucky that will swallow them, if they stumble into it by mistake.

Ret_25X

It is precisely because they believe that their vision of the future is deified and sanctified that they believe all references to the past be removed. History is an obstacle to be demolished in the quest for utopia.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” CS Lewis

Ex-PH2

Yeah, I believe Stalin and Hitler thought that way, too. So I’m wondering how many real history books I should start collecting. I have some room on my bookshelves, you see.

IS the FBI going to be the equivalent of the Stasi? God, I hope not.

Well, if the gubmint idjits ever agree on another stimulus check, I’m going to get a few things from Lodge for cooking. I also cook, you know.

Nice place for a decisive battle. Just sayin.

My Great-Great Grandfather served with the CSA, Company H, 26th Regiment, Moore County, North Carolina and was wounded on 1 July 1963 at the Battle of Gettysburg.

And now the Left wants to dishonor/destroy History:

Beware of the REBEL YELL. And I am not speaking of Billy Idol.

Here is a 4 minute video of a rare footage of Civil War Veterans doing the Rebel Yell. Footage was recorded in the 1930s.

As someone commented: “They still had the spirit in em”.

Ex-PH2

Sometimes, the only way to protect that kind of history is to remove it to safekeeping from the sight of the snotty little offendeds.

Put it somewhere for safekeeping until things clear up.

I have no issues with Confederate statues. My great-grandfather, his three brothers and their uncle and my grandmother’s uncle all fought on the side of the Union Army.

Frankly, I’m waiting for these ignorant asses to try to deface the statue of Martin Luther King in WDC. It’s gonna happen, because they are that ignorant.

The Other Whitey

The crazy-eyed rich bitch pretending to be poor from the Bronx claimed just the other day that the statue of Saint Damian of Molokai is “a symbol of white supremacy.” I doubt the little retard has any idea who he was, she just found a statue of a Catholic priest and thought she picked an easy target.

ninja, I gave my Daughter the copy of the 26th NC History. Her GGGrandfather and uncles on her Mama’s Daddy’s side were Company B. One died as the 8th Color Guard to pick up and advance the Colors.

Ex, we’ve tried that, out of sight out of mind thing. Yeah…no that doesn’t work either. You may recall when all of the “stuff” FIRST started happening in Richmond this past June, the UDC HQs was firebombed. Priceless hand written documents, uniforms, and the Jackson flag were lost forever. Among other statues, one in a cemetery in Sylvania, Screven County just north of Savannah, was pulled down and busted all over hell. Appeasement does NOT work. Destroying all things Confederate is just the beginning. As you and others have pointed out, their ignorance has no bounds. This is the destruction of the core history of the United States. It needs to stop…NOW.

SFC D, she’d say the same thing that she said of Saint Damian.

SEAL TWO

In the early Twentieth Century a Civil War veteran was asked to exhibit the the “Rebel Yell” for the interviewers. He responded “With a mouth full of false teeth and a belly of food, it just can’t be done.”

My ancestors served with the 7th and 8th Mississippi, Barksdale’s Brigade under Lee, and with the 84th (?) Ohio.

A very astute and pertinent observation, right there.

Cameron

If these guys are looking for a fight, I suggest they look at what happened to the video game character Colonel Henry Favors (who’s pretty much an expy of George Armstrong Custer) from Red Dead Redemption II who kept provoking a Native American tribe into fighting his regiment because he was apparently known for being a coward during the Civil War so he could repair his reputation along with claiming the glory of victory, and minor spoiler alert, when he got the fight he wanted, it didn’t go his way at all.

The Other Whitey

I still have the T-shirt I got from Gettysburg when I went there in 2009, because I found it to be quite profound. It says “Gettysburg” across the top, with a Rebel flag and vintage US flag in the center, and “Our country’s common ground” below.

I hiked Little Round Top with my Dad, where we were both quite impressed by the sheer determination and balls it must have taken for the 15th Alabama to charge up the steep-ass slope under fire, and the sheer determination and balls it took for the 20th Maine to make their bayonet charge down that same steep-ass slope under fire. My parents, my sister, and I, stood at the spot where General Lee watched Pickett’s Charge fail, and where George Pickett famously cried “General, I have no division!” We stood on the other side of the field, the “High-Water Mark” where a mortally-wounded Lewis Armistead broke down sobbing not for his own wounds, but because his best friend Winfield Scott Hancock had also been severely wounded. We saw the Wheatfield (according to the tour guide “the only one on earth spelled with a capital W), where Meagher’s Irish Brigade, depleted to regiment-size and armed with obsolete M1842 smoothbores firing buck & ball, held off Joseph Kershaw’s South Carolinians. We also visited the site where they received their general absolution from Father William Corby before the fight. We ate dinner at a restaurant in an old stone house that had once been an Underground Railroad stop.

It was a hell of a trip, and I hope to take my kids there some day. There is so much history in that place, to lose it is to cut off a vital part of America’s soul.

I still have my “Killer Angels” T-shirt that I was given for being in the movie “Gettysburg” as one of the cavalry re-enactors. The movie was named for the book of the same name but changed to “Gettysburg” because Hollywierd marketing gurus thought too many people would think “Killer Angels” was an outlaw biker movie. The infantry guys were only given the T-shirt and five bucks for travel, whereas we cav troopers with horses were paid $110 per day. As you can see from all the infantry re-enactors (about 5,000) in Pickett’s charge in the movie, money was not a motivating factor for participating in the filming.

For the benefit of those who have not been to Gettysburg, the idea that all the Confederate monuments should be removed from the park is insane, as there are monuments and statues dedicated to confederate soldiers and officers located all over the park. There are literally hundreds of them scattered over every portion of the park where there was any engagement. Plus, there are several hundred Confederate artillery pieces located wherever a significant artillery engagement occurred. There are also monuments denoting where every Union or Confederate general officer was killed during the battle. Too bad D-rat swamp rats are oblivious to these facts. Trump needs to veto this legislation if it passes the Senate.

gitarcarver

An interesting question would be if you allow “Union” monuments that for example, denote where a unit was during a battle, but exclude “Confederate” monuments that say the same thing but for Confederate units, isn’t that a restriction based on the content of what is being said?

Apparently we are willing to continue to kill the First Amendment as well.

irongrampa

Listen to those words from that proud old Civil War vet “we ain’t got much left, but we’ll give you what we got.”

Refer to it if you wonder how this nation has endured.

KoB

Billy Yank…”Hey Johnny Reb, how many you got left over there?”

Johnny Reb…”Oh we got about enough for one more good killing.”

That conversation supposedly happened at Spotsylvania. Been attributed to Petersburg also, among other places.

Been to G’Burg twice, visiting the Battlefield Park both times and helping do the re-enactment. It is a very spiritual and haunted place. A number of ancestors that were there are still there in Spirit. I have the same sentiments and experiences as TOW. You can bet that rgr769 will chime in with his visits.

You don’t have to pay Honors to the War, but you MUST pay Honors to the Warrior.

Just Lurkin

I have been to Gettysburg six times, Shiloh and Antietam three times, Monocacy and Ft. Fisher twice, Chickamauga God knows how many times (I used to drill in Chattanooga) and many other battlefields to include Ft. Donelson, Stones River, Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge, Petersburg, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Manassas, Kennesaw Mountain and Appomattox. As perhaps you can tell this is one of my favorite things to do on vacation. The humorless scolds of the left want to strip these places bare of anything that offends their precious sensibilities, but I doubt many of them enjoy visiting such places (and, more to the point, most of those of us who do don’t vote for them). They want a nation stripped of its history so that the people will not understand the long struggle that was needed to forge this great nation-to hell with them!

SEAL TWO

During the winter of 1863 while Yanks and Rebs were facing each other across the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, one of the Yanks belittled a Reb for the rags he was wearing. The Confederate responded “We don’t wear our Sunday best for killin’ hogs…”

GeorgeV

At this rate, at Gettysburg and other battlefields from the Civil War will only be able to say “Union troops fought a battle here because some people did something.”

The more they want to erase American History, the more convinced I am that they want it to repeat itself.
