Guns News
Colt is out of the long gun business for civilians for now. The company is busy making military weapons.
From the article: Legendary small arms manufacturer Colt has officially bowed away from producing long guns for the civilian market.
The Truth About Guns reported that the move came to light after one of Colt’s numerous retailers, RSR Group, announced to their customers that the company had made it known that they would cease building and selling rifles to the civilian market in order to pay more attention to regaining lost ground on vital military contracts.
Colt’s current lineup of rifles is all based entirely on the AR platform.
Colt made waves in the long gun market in the 1960s after buying the design and trademarks associated with ArmaLite’s select-fire AR-15 and AR-10 rifles, the former of which was adopted by the US military as the M16 assault rifle.
By the mid-1960s, Colt began selling a semi-automatic version, dubbed the Colt AR-15, to the civilian market, and the rifle began steadily ascending in popularity among a variety of consumers, from recreational shooters, hunters, and law enforcement. – article
Sorry, guys, you’ll have to stick with getting short guns from Colt for a while.
Oh, yeah – if I understand it correctly, the “AR” prefix for things like AR-15, etc., is derived from ARmalite, and does not mean automatic rifle…. right?

“Oh, yeah – if I understand it correctly, the “AR” prefix for things like AR-15, etc., is derived from ARmalite, and does not mean automatic rifle…. right?”.. You are correct M’Lady
I thought it was “A”rmalight “R”ifle…….. but close enough. We all know what we mean.
The AR-17 is a shotgun.
I thought the “AR” meant they were made in Arkansas. After all, the AK47 is made in Alaska, right?
Oh, well, what do I know???
I know nothing! Nothing, I tell ya! Nothing!!
Sorry, Ex-PH2, but some of use have been around long enough to know that is… shall we say… a “mis-characterization”?
Yep. That includes the AR-7 takedown .22 and the AR-17 shotgun.
I wanted one of those (AR-7) so bad when I was a kid.
You can still have one. Henry Repeating Arms maks one just like the old one, and it floats.
Lots of Colt AR clones out there to choose from. Mine would be a Bushmaster. If I had one, that is.
Heard a rumor that the S&W version is pretty good as well. No personal experience, of course, just passing along what somebody said about something or another.
Pssst… get the Sig. Trust me.
An object of my private lust, the Sig…
Got one. It’s a shooter.
If you want a Bushmaster, get one from the old Windham factory. Or you could buy a Windham Weaponry AR. It’s the old Bushmaster factory, run by the former Bushmaster employees, using the old tooling. Much better than the new Bushmaster rifles.
Concur on that. The new Bushmaster kept only the name.
Colt squandered their purchase from Armalite.
They sat on it. The market passed them by.
Hell, I’m surprised Starbucks hasn’t come out with
their version yet.
I thought it was AR Mattel. I shouldn’t have sold my AR 180.
IMHO, the suits at Colt have long ago squandered their legacy by failing to keep up with the markets.
Their condition at current is self-inflicted. Perhaps they can recover, but…
The men’s Barbie doll. Accessorize, swap, change, interchange, with no or few tools, change calibers from .22LR to .50 caliber in seconds… a truly lovely piece of engineering.
It’s like cars back in the 60’s.
Everything could be swapped out across makes.
Bell housings, trannies, rear ends etc.
Being a backyard motorhead was lots of fun.
Just look at the street rod industry and the
market for kit cars.
GM has the market with the LS and LT used
in modern “slammed” classic cars.
Somebody gonna put a rear view mirror on an AR.
And a USB charging port. And GPS.
“…you’ll have to stick with getting short guns…”
Yep, that’s what I told her when I left.
I always considered the AR stood for Awesome Rifle… Leastways, mine was!
Colt consistently tries to bankrupt itself.
Stop selling the Colt SAA (“Peacemaker”) as the Western boom was booming. Enter a guy named Ruger and the Single Six and Blackhawk. Oops. And restart production just in time for the tapering off of Westerns. Oooooooops…..
They dropped making many civilian arms to concentrate on military sales. The Army promptly went to FN for rifles. Oops.
The dropped small guns like the “detective special” to focus on full size guns and military arms. Then the concealed carry boom happened. Oops. They stayed out of it until everyone else was selling pocket guns, then jumped back in at maximum competition. Ooooooooooooops…..
Wondernine craze? Colt 2000. Oops.
Latest version: appease the anti-freedom lunatics while continuing to rent-seek from Uncle Sugar. (“Oops” pending)
They had a gem in the Colt Commander but alas
let the market sit idle until everyone else
was selling pocket pistols galore.
And the Mustang was marketed to women way too
late in game. The pink and lavender models
from the competion sealed that market.
My M-16 in basic training was stamped “M16A1 (AR15 MOD) GM HYDRAMATIC DIV.
Mine in OSUT was a GM Hydramatic M16, overstamped A1. It had the old-style bulls-eye forward assist.
Mine was stamped Harrison and Richardson.
Yeah, I know.. M14
The barrel turned white and when I showed
it to the DI he took it from me.
One more round and I would be missing some
body parts.
Colt goes “woke”… betcha. (Been jackin’ things up for so long, wouldn’t be surpised.)
They will still sell 1911’s and revolvers to civilians.
Colt gets a royalty for every military M-16 and M-4 until 2050! Even on those made by other companies.
How did they ever negotiate that kind of deal?
