Look, VA Did It Again
This is disturbing. First of all, those monthly VA disability payments are supposed to be set up for XX months, aren’t they? And isn’t this all done on an autopay basis?
Or am I just assuming incorrectly that there are no government sandcrabs in cluttered cubicles who key in this stuff each month and manage to constantly screw up things for other people, who have to pay for their mistakes?
The man who caught the mistake did notify the VA, but despite his paying back part of it immediately, he was still penalized for the VA’s mistake.

Well, you must keep a weather eye on your accounts, but you should already know that, and do not ever think that Uncle Sam is benevolent or does not make mistakes. We all know better. If you assume otherwise, you get what that giant on the hillside wants to give you – and it will hurt.

Perhaps it’s cases like this that lead people to believe that veterans are not-too-bright children who need to be closely watched lest they hurt someone.
“. Despite Zink’s concerned phone calls to the VA, the agency kept paying him around $3,300 a month in disability.”
And despite his concern he kept spending it. In addition to his active duty pay. Not much sympathy here.
“We’re from the government, and we’re here to help you.” Which is the true statement?
Lady friend was drawing a little SS benefit, took on some contract engineering work. Told SS and they said no worry, we’ll monitor the income and when you make too much, we’ll notify you. She kept telling them to stop the benefit, no, no problem we got this. When they finally stopped it, the overpayment was into almost 20K. “We want our overpayment back with interest….right now!”
It was a real nightmare for her, took over a year to get their screw up fixed.
I’m currently receiving a overage in my monthly military retired pay. I’ve alerted DFAS to the error in writing but it will probably be another month or two before the error is corrected. I’m saving the surplus amount and plan to repay the debt fully in a lump sum. I’m just hoping my SBP premium will be recalculated and I’m reimbursed for my excess payments.
Kudos to the veteran in the article for alerting VA to its mistake. A damn shame he’s now experiencing financial stress while repaying his debt. I hope President Trump shuts the federal government down later this year to again show the public employee unions who the HMFIC really is.
When I was an S-1 rat, THIS was always my advice for those soldiers who were bright enough to notice an overage on their LES. (For the ones who chose to ignore it and not ask any questions, I had no pity…)
But the worst were those who asked, got the advice, and went out and bought a new car with the extra money as a down payment anyway. When those No Pay Due LESs came for three or four months in a row, they were suddenly very concerned about paying their new car payment…
I wouldn’t pay it back when they first ask for it as they will probably just withhold your payment before you get a notice that you owe the money.
Sit on the stash, invest it in something that you can get your hands on immediately and use the money to supplement yourself while they take all your pay.
Be careful, you’re dealing with AOC’s economics department, not #PresidentTrumps…
F/U bitch. I work at the VA Pension Center and I do a motherfukn’ amazing job.
Well, good for you.
But you might want to, you know, actually read the article before complaining about it and calling the author names. The article deals with an error re: VA disability compensation – not a VA pension.
You may (or may not) do a “amazing” job, but some of your colleagues decidely do not.
Feel free to congratulate yourself for doing the job you are paid to do and, by your standards, doing it well.
I have some bad news for you. If you have to tell people you are “amazing”; you’re not.
Excellence is apparent to all. It does not need a PAO.
Those ancient Briton infantrymen could have put some more work into the giant dick. Would it have killed them to add a few veins and ball hairs?
That particular English hill figure (the Cerne Abbas Giant) might not be ancient. There’s some strong circumstantial evidence that it dates from the 17th Century and is political satire re: Cromwell.

That’s even better! Thanks Hondo
