WASHINGTON, Kan. — Former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas has been promoted from captain to colonel for his service in the Army during World War II.

The Wichita Eagle reports both chambers of the U.S. Congress have unanimously passed a bill promoting the 95-year-old Dole.

Considering everything he’s been through, this is well-deserved. He may not be with us much longer.

Well deserved to a congress critter who WAS actually a War Hero Warrior. One who did not apparently use his service as a stepping stone for self promotion. Though it may be merely symbolic at this point in time, to me, it is a nannie, nannie, boo, boo to the embellishing, self serving, hypocritical, asinine POSs that we have seen so much of. And we all know of whom I speak of.

The Other Whitey

“And we all know of whom I speak of.”

Does his name rhyme with Dick Blumenthal?

I don’t remember his wartime exploits even coming up during the ’96 campaign, where he was the diametric opposite of the draft dodger in chief. In fact, I remember wondering why his arm was dead. Then gave him much respect when I found out why. He was lucky to survive. That he’s made it to 95 is a testament to his will.

Sparks

Congratulations and well deserved Sir.

Retired Grunt

Congratulations Colonel… a little above the zone, but well deserved sir.

OWB

Nice. Very nice.

In the old days they used to name buildings, bridges, airports and roads as tribute.

BlueCord Dad

Not to mention the privy….”It sings”.

SFC D

SGT Provo approves.

Tallywhagger

Haha, I had to look that one up, what a great story.

W Bush had a sewage treatment facility named for him in Oceanside, California.

On the Simpsons they had a bit about the “U.S.S Walter Mondale. It’s a laundry ship!”

Tallywhagger

ROTF! Never saw the episode but love the context.

Bless his heart, his tenure marked the end of my liberal era.

To this day, I still only think of Washington National airport as DCA. RR was very important in my political evolution.

I took the Private Pilot written examination at the FAA office, there.
Pencils, paper, E6B, and a few weeks waiting time for results from the FAA in Oklahoma.

Memory is that I got a 97 out of 100. They were wrong about one answer but I let it slide… close enough for government work.

I loved Bob Dole’s “endorsement” of Viagra but SNL’s take-off skit on the theme was even better when they had Libby doing a promo for “Niagra”!

To my rudimentary way of thinking, a Colonel is roughly the equivalent of Senior Chief/1st Sergeant. They don’t give that shit out to just everyone.

You gotta earn it. Dole is “all that” for his service. And so are millions of others who will not be so honored.

But, WTF? They made Washington a Six Star General. We take our blessings as we find them.

You have it wrong. A colonel is equivalent to a chief warrant officer. But do not take my word for it, ask any chief warrant officer.

Had the good fortune to work for a CW4 at Ft. Carson, a very classy guy, he loved his job and made people glad just to be around him. As much could also be said for the SGM.

Implausible as it may sound, I only ran across a couple of genuine assholes during my tour, the worst of which was a brand new 1st Sgt. Bless his heart, he persuaded me not to reenlist, even though I was up for E-5.

I heard that the USS Walter Mondale simply follows the USS Jimmy Carter and goes belly-up whenever the USS Ronald Reagan is nearby!

Tallywhagger

IIRC, Carter was a graduate of the US Naval Academy. Maybe his family had some connections.

Years ago before my retirement from corporate aviation Mr. now Colonel Dole was an occasional guest flying on the companies G4 or G5 and a guest speaker at the management conference the company would have annually in Aspen. The man was always gracious and friendly to those of us who maintained the aircraft and always took time to talk to us as well as knew our names, a genuinely friendly man, quite unlike that dipshit who ran against him for POTUS(I have 2 Clinton stories from those days also, for another time) and of course that overbearing sanctimonious fake ass Dick from Connecticut who protected the toys for tots box from juvenile insurgents pretending in his own mind he was part of the southeast Asian war games.

Tallywhagger

Dang! You had it all!

As I understand it, John “Fonda” Kerry is type rated for “the family jet”, of some Gulf Stream variation.

USMC Steve

In the Dole Library in Kansas, when you walk in, there is a photo enlarged of him in the hospital. Guy looked rough. He got all torn up by a machine gun that destroyed his shoulder.

luddite4change

A well deserved honor, but I think the title is a little premature as the President does have to actually sign the legislation.

AnotherPat

Both the House and Senate unanimously passed legislation to promote former U.S. Senator Bob Dole to the grade of Colonel in the U.S. Army.

And we know President Trump will put his signature on it.

Congress and the President agreeing on this. That speaks alot for Senator Dole, who received a Bronze Star
with Valor and a Purple Heart when he served with the 10th Mountain Division during World War Two.

A well-deserved recognition and honor.

Salute, Colonel Dole.

Thank You for sharing this story, Ex-PH2.

In case you were not aware of the 10th Veterans Association. My wifes uncle served in the 10th, went ashore in Italy, fought most of the way into Germany before being wounded. Bronze Star with “V” device, Purple Heart and several campaign medals in his shadow box.

Mr. Pete

I’m self identifying as a Field Marshal these days.

I get to do that, right?

Tallywhagger

Yes, but you have to wear a traffic cone on your head and exhibit good posture.

Prior Service

I had to work for my promotion to colonel, but his is probably much more well deserved.

Tallywhagger

Amen. I wonder what John Glenn might have had to say about the matter.
