California shooting: Twelve dead at Thousand Oaks music bar
A gunman has opened fire at a bar in the city of Thousand Oaks. The shooter stormed the venue armed with guns and smoke grenades. A deputy sheriff was killed during the attack.
Tattooed trenchcoat-wearing ex-Marine, 29, is identified as gunman who massacred twelve people during student night at country bar: Suspect killed himself after hurling smoke grenades onto dance floor and slaying cop in California
- Ian Long, 29, opened fire at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Southern California, at 11.20pm
- He was dressed in all-black and let off at least 30 shots from a pistol with extended mags
- Long also let off smoke grenades to confuse the terrified crowds
- He killed himself after killing 11 people inside the bar and a sheriff’s sergeant who responded to the scene
- There were around 100 people inside the bar, including some who were under 21, who were there to dance
- The College Country Night is a regular fixture and youngsters from nearby colleges can go and stamp black X’s on their hands to mark that they won’t drink
- Some of those inside were students at Pepperdine University and others are thought to have gone to California Lutheran University – both are Christian schools

Why is it, if someone was ever even in a recruiting station 40 years ago, the press ballyhoos “EX-MARINE”. You never see “ex-ironworker” or whatever. A sore spot with me… EX-COLLEGE STUDENT COMMITS HIT AND RUN” would make as much sense. Fu**ing press.
“Why is it … ‘EX-MARINE’?”
Two reasons come to mind:
1. Military people are almost all, to one degree or another, trained in doing violence, though obviously in service to noble principles. And Marine infantry are better trained at violence than, say, fighter jet mechanics. So when a person becomes *criminally* violent, their past training and experience in violence may have bearing.
2. Veterans are veterans—regardless of whether the do good or ill in their civilian lives. And Americans (more or less) hold vets in high regard. So “Marine Veteran KillS Teelve In Shooting Spree” is just as valid a headliine as “Marine Veteran Opens His Home to Poor on Thanksgiving,”
I feel your pain. It sucks when “one of your own goes” off the rails—whether you’re a vet, an MD, or a minister.
But like it or not, the fact he was a former Marine does have bearing on the story.
Well, here we go.
Dancing ghouls in 5, 4, 3…
Well here we go with some more laws. Wonder what triggered this one. Being a Marine?, Too many tats? Trench coat too tight? Wanted a live band instead of a DJ? Carry concealed, have situational awareness. Be prepared to defend yourselves. Sad that it has come to this. Will probably only get worse. Nut case?
Never mind that California has insanely strict Gun Laws like Chicongo does, I’m sure that the left will be screeching for more Laws before the blood is even dry.
^word^
Of course they will. The left doesn’t want to punish criminals for gun crimes, they want to punish law-abiding citizens for crimes they didn’t commit.
Had heard snippets about this on radio news a few times this morning with no mention of military service. Very nice, for a change.
Difficult to find appropriate words for this sort of abomination. So sad.
He was a mental case, for sure. Earlier this year, some PD crisis intervention team visited him and determined that he was NOT in need of a mental health evaluation. My guess is that, in retrospect, that might not have been a good conclusion. Police were called by a neighbor of the shooter’s because he was banging his head against a wall and screaming to no one. Banging another person’s head against a wall makes sense. Banging your own doesn’t.
Dunno, Cav. I’m not sure I’d blame the cops. In California, someone usually has to get outrageously sideways to warrant a 5150 psych hold. If the disturbance complaint was from the neighbors, and Long was able to calm down and show some control, an on-site decision was probably made to let him slide with a warning.
Part of the reason for this, so I’ve been told, is that California doesn’t have a lot of mental hospital capacity. Nor an inclination to store resident loons in local jails which are also maxed out. Instead, the current strategy is apparently to counsel and medicate.
It’s likely one reason why you can run across local news stories from time to time where a relative will say his homicidal psycho nephew is a good boy, and wouldn’t have robbed the 7-Eleven if he had been taking his meds.
Perry, “In California, someone usually has to get outrageously sideways to warrant a 5150 psych hold.”
Could it possibly be that they seem so normal?
Poe, with all due respect, if you’re suggesting that would include myself, I’d like to cheerfully suggest that you eat Hillary’s shorts.
What?
Was that my other voice talking?…
burn
laughs and ducks
Perry, just checked back a day later. No, there was no intent to suggest you were among the California crazies although I must say your response tends to indicate a bit of hysteria in that “other” voice of yours. Ahem…
I have it on good authority that Hillary and Bill both wear Depends.
Industrial Strength Depends.
5150s are indeed a pain in the ass in this Soviet Socialist Republic in which I live and work. We report them all the time, nothing happens. Cops are right there with us, best they can do is catch and release.
Thank the dems.
It’s like that nationwide. Deinstitutionalized all the mental hospitals, there’s nowhere for them to go except jail and hospital.
Most of the crazies aren’t breaking the law, they’re just nuts. So jail doesn’t work, and won’t help them even if they are breaking the law and get arrested.
Hospitals are a revolving door for psych cases. I’ve seen a guy get released from a hospital because he was “no longer a danger” after slitting both his wrists. In and out of the hospital in less than a few hours.
Wasn’t that the shit that we have to thank Geraldo Moustache for?
Can somebody bitch slap Geraldo for me, please. I’ll give a cookie and a war sorrtory
Thank the constitution.
You cannot be denied your rights except through due process as a result of actions for which the government had probable cause to believe you were a threat to yourself or others.
It is the same in red states.
Not surprised you blame the dems. You blame the dems for everything because you are an entitled moron who thinks he deserved more in life than he got and blame others for not getting it.
Thank the Kennedy’s.
I grew up with their closing of the state institutions including the Fernald School in Massachusetts. Due process had nothing to do with it.
Amen, It hasn’t slowed down either, if anything it has picked up. They should feel guilty for what they did to Rosemary but now the whole country has to suffer.
“…because you are an entitled moron who thinks he deserved more in life than he got and blame others for not getting it.”
Not surprised by your nonsensical accusation. Show us somewhere, anywhere, that TOW has indicated any sort of entitlement feelings, or that he has blamed anyone for not getting what he deserved? Reality is that TOW has expressed quite the opposite.
But, fine. Attack posters here. And lie about them. You are just showing your true character.
TOW doesn’t really need my support, but didn’t want you making any assumptions that silence translates into agreement with your silliness.
No need to white knight him. He is a coward that hides behind anonymity but man enough to deal with my posts.
My post was referring to his post history where he constantly blames other groups for things not going his way in the U.S.
The guy is a petty little weasel who likes to libel and slander people while hiding behind anonymity.
Irritating little cocksucker, ain’t ya? Got an answer for everything. Usually misguided and uninformed, but I guess that’s not terribly important to you.
The more he posts, the more it appears that he’s really Lars, who’s slowly weaning himself off of his psychotropic drugs.
“…a coward that hides behind anonymity…”
And you posting at chthulhu does NOT make you the same thing?
Wow. That is REALLY the big, fat pot calling the kettle black, SPORT!
phew boy, did someone pinch your bag of lollies or something?
Never heard them called “lollies” before.
“hiding behind anonymity”
Now that is just rich.
Anonymity is the only thing that let us say what we really believe.
Negative.
The 1st ammendment covers that quite nicely. The need for the mask is unfortunately self protection.
Anyone on this blog can be easily identified without too much effort.
Ever have a CB handle?
Nickname?
Alias?
Secret friend?
That permanent record your teachers warned about is out there.
DMV is a good place to start.
Or you can sue the admin.
“The guy is a petty little weasel who likes to libel and slander people while hiding behind anonymity.”
Wow! I’m sure the irony flew right over your pointy little head.
SR-71
No, you aren’t. TOW doesn’t talk, or write, like that. You are just jealous because you aren’t mature enough to do what TOW has done, is doing, and will continue to do. Instead of talking about stuff, TOW, and a lot of other posters around here, actually did things like save lives and protect the property of fellow Americans and citizens of the world without regard for their ethnicity, age, or any of the crap you claim we discriminate against.
Who is the hater? Best go look in the mirror, very small person.
“He is a coward that hides behind anonymity”
Kind of like you “Cthulhu”, or is that your real name?
“You cannot be denied your rights except through due process as a result of actions for which the government had probable cause to believe you were a threat to yourself or others.”
This just drips with irony.
Believe, the blame lies with the ACLU. They took up the cause to release the folks from, and close institutions in the 70’s. Guess they were looking for more work. Now they’ve got it.
It’s really sad actually. Most of the people that are in these group homes and “community care facilities” should not be out here, for their own safety and that of the rest of the public.
There’s now a HUGE industry set up to cater to the needs of these people that should properly be in a locked care facility. Most of it flies under the radar, but if you start looking around you’ll see there’s a group home on every block now in the cities and suburbs.
Sure people feel better by taking away the (admittedly) sad mental hospitals, but it does them and the public no favors to have them out in the community.
When these unfortunate souls were turned out on the streets by some bleeding heart libretard governenor in Illinois, because they shouldn’t be “locked up” (they weren’t), the majority of them had no place to go. Some of them died of starvation and exposure to foul weather; one man, who was quite harmless, was set on fire by some creatures from hell while he was sitting on a park bench; others spent their time wandering from one bus stop to another to get out of the cold and, like that man on the park bench, were lost souls who were completely unable to take care of themselves.
Many, many thanks to the DEMOCRATS in Springfield for deciding in the 1980s that this was the more “HUMANE” way to treat them, more humane than keeping them in supervised care where they were at least kept clean, given decent food and needed medication.
Human, my fat Aunt Harriet. It was just the Dumbocraps’ way of getting rid of an expensive nuisance.
They can’t generally vote as wards of the state
They can vote if they are dumped on the street. Or, of course, “someone” can vote for them.
“It was just the Dumbocraps’ way of getting rid of an expensive nuisance”. Nailed it.
We had a woman who was homeless, she lived out of her car, and sold newspapers at the bars downtown. She had been institutionalized, but was set free, along with lots of other folks.
Long story short, another whack-job stalked her for a short time, then raped and murdered her, leaving the body in the window well of the public library, which cause a bit of a stir the next morning. They both should have still been in an institution.
And you’re an arrogant shitbird who thinks he/she/it/whatever is smarter than everyone else. Thanks for clearing that up, Cuntholio.
Anyone got any clue to the character, length, or type of this guys service? From the looks of the pic above….he didn’t do much in service, unless its a YOUNG pic.
So far only that he served from 2008 – 2013.
From what I gathered on FNC this morning, he made it to corporal, served one tour in A’stan, and received a CAR.
No awards, two article 15s for shoplifting at the exchange. Honorable discharge. One deployment to Afghanistan.
“shoplifting at the exchange”
That is the last thing I ever expected to read. I must be one naive fool to have thought no one would ever stoop so low as to steal from the PX. Not as bad as stealing from a church but damn man.
Oh yeah. Had a dude in my squad that decided to celebrate his PCS to Fort Hood by getting caught shoplifting panties from the PX.
The funny part was I found out about it from my best friend. Apparently, my dumbass ended up in his squad. Small fucking world.
“Tattooed trenchcoat-wearing ex-Marine”
because that’s all anybody needs to know.
He may have had some kind of problem in another gin mill but we will wait and see the results after the investigation.
1 – Banging his own head against a wall and screaming – bad
2 – 5 years of service – asked to leave early?
3 – Goes to a crowded place to take everyone with him – very, very bad
4 – Now the obnoxious stuff in the press begins – worse than bad.
Did he get his gun from an illegal seller online, like that guy I wrote up a few weeks ago?
What illegal seller online? In Commiefornia People’s Democratic Paradise one cannot legally purchase a firearm online or otherwise without having the weapon held by a FFL Dealer for ten (10) days while both the state and federal governments run background checks.
He bought his weapon legally. Less clear if the extended magazine purchase was legal.
Possession of an extended magazine is also usually illegal in the California. Even if legally purchased.
And all of those gun laws in Commiefruitnia didn’t do shit to prevent that shooting!
Was this another malfunction of a “gun free Zone” ?
This guy: https://valorguardians.com/blog/?p=81175
There is an entire population group of people who are selling guns online, whether it’s legal or not.
You forgot “illegal” a few times. You are actually supporting one of the prime arguments, how do you dtop illegal buyers and sellers? The answer is not “further restrict the law abiding.”
I never said ‘further restrictions were necessary’. I simply pointed out, if you had read what I wrote, that Yak had put together a working handgun from parts he acquired online, but did not have any kind of permit, or applied for and FOID, which, in Illinois, is required if you want to own a gun.
I re-read your article. Yes one can buy gun parts online and one can buy black powder percussion revolvers online, no questions asked. But contrar to what you might believe machining a receiver for an AR15 requires skill and tooling most do not possess; easier and cheaper to get one legally or from a back alley illegal seller. As for percussion pistols and rifles, I have never heard of one used in a crime in the past 100 years. They are not regulated because they are not “firearms” under federal law.
Nope, in California they have build parties. You take your unfinished lower in and they provide the equipment and training for you to finish it yourself. Not expensive at all, just takes time and planning. Lots of places do it.
https://news.ghostguns.com/2017/01/23/80-build-parties-workshops/
Not that it matters here as this was a Glock. Where crazy murderer got his illegal magazine is another question. I am guessing it isn’t far to drive to Nevada?
A Glock 21 holds 13 rounds. California magazine maximum is 10 rounds. Now I know that 13 > 10. But how much difference does anyone really think that is going to make when shooting in to a crowded room?
Build parties are a thing of the past. Cal DOJ along with ATF shut those down. If you advertise on any of the gun websites about hosting one, expect a nice warrant and prosecution. The CAD/CAM machines they use are pricey, so just buying one to tool your own (which is still legal) is out of range for most folks.

2004, you can’t stop crazy
So it’s a small community and it’s still early but word is that his command gave him a choice. Get help for anger management or get out. He got out and from what other people are saying tried to get into the reserves a couple of years ago.
Hence the five years and some change.
Another shooting in which the authorities knew about the killer. It’s almost like they want these things to happen.
I hear ya but I’m not ready to go there yet.
On the other hand, after seeing what the dems are capable of with the Kavanaugh hearings I do sense a sharp increase in skepticism across the land.
Heard one “news reporter” say that the shooter used “an extended magazine or clip, which is illegal in California”. So let’s see…
1- It is illegal to carry a gun into a bar in CA and pretty much everywhere.
2- It is illegal to use said gun to shoot people in CA and pretty much everywhere.
3- It is illegal to murder people in CA and pretty much everywhere..
So exactly why is the magazine size relevant, we can all see that the shooter really wasn’t too concerned about laws.
Stop making sense regarding the magazine size. It’s much more scary when you can blame the giant magazines.
Sarge, maybe it’s because California is one of those liberal states that has passed laws specifically banning extended capacity magazines as a way of getting around the 2d Amendment.
See how well such laws work?
Exactly my point, Poe!
Did you just call him sarge?
OMG, someone is going to be doing pushups!
Poetrooper has earned the right to call me Sarge, many times over. Most other people, not so much.
Addressing you as Sergeant First Class seems a bit too formal for this forum and calling you “D” just the opposite. When I was a young staff sergeant fifty years ago, “Sarge” was a commonly used term of informal address for all non-coms, E-5 and up, until they achieved first sergeant or sergeant major. As a fire team leader and a squad leader I was always just Sarge. Even in the more formal working atmosphere of battalion and brigade staffs, my troops called me Sarge and my superiors called me Sergeant. The only time I was addressed as Staff Sergeant was when the Sergeant Major was pissed.
Times change…
And I neglected to include, SFC D, “Thank you for the kind words.”
You’re welcome, and just plain “D” will do.
Why would anyone be doing pushups??? Calling a Sergeant “Sarge” is anything but disrespectful. If that has changed along with so many other things, it doesn’t look good from here. Don’t they have some substantive things to focus upon?
Will admit to remembering fondly the first time I was called “Sarge.” It felt like having earned something special. Now y’all wanna take that away from us, too? Seems knda sad.
It is also illegal in Mexifornia to possess a magazine holding more than ten rounds; it is a felony.
Mexifornia?
Not surprised you would say something like that.
Just calling it what it is becoming. Victor Davis Hansen coined the name and wrote a book about it. Maybe you should spend some time in L.A.
Sort of like the past eras of US bigotry where people wrote about too many Italians settling in New Jersey or Irish settling in Massachusetts.
That kind of bigotry was a stain on our history. Glad America moved past bigotry like that…
Oh wait, guess not.
Califonia’s pandering to particular groups for political advantage has produced “Mexifornia”, not bigotry. See also “Grijalva, Raul” in AZ.
“Irish settling in Massachusetts”
It was great! My family roots gave me the skills of hard labor, the love of country and the God that blessed it. Take a close look at those WPA stone walls in the Boston area.
Tour the cemeteries with their elaborate stone monuments and explore the rich history of New England Irish families.
Take your troll show some where else.
Gonna freak over “Polish Hill” in Pittsburgh, Squiggy?
Are you perhaps referring to past eras when Democrats ran a race-segregated society? A slave society? Gave us the “Dred Scott” decision that sought to toss out all slave-limit legislation and cement rece-slavery as the law of the land everywhere, thus igniting a civil war a few years later?
And now have to make everything about race, again, having learned nothing?
The side you support? The patronizing “we have to uplift you” is just as invidious and despicable.
Oh, snap…
I don’t recall my Italian Great Grandparents coming here illegally, but white cucks like you ALWAYS have to cry “dats raciss”, nevermind the many Americans getting raped and murdered by yourdarker skinned “pets”.
Crime stats show, overwhelmingly, that “same” Color crime very much outnumbers “different”.
Oops.
Though I should apologize. My comment was flippant and I should not have implied that you yourself is a bigot.
I stand by the fact that the perceptions and assumptions in someone writing about how “foreigners” are taking something away from them by settling in their communities is a sentiment based on bigotry and an entitled view that someone is more entitled to the community being “their” way and belonging to “them” because they were there first.
Books and essays lamenting changes that immigrants create in a community are usually well received by the community at the time they are published but with a few generations they are seen for what they were; lamentations of a bigot.
Fundamentally do you think it is consistent with American values to regard a new family in the neighborhood who buys or rents a home on your street is taking something from you?
It should not matter if the family moving in is the same ethnicity or religion.
But to clarify I do not necessarily think you are a bigot and I am sorry I implied you were in my post.
I thought this was the post about the California shooting instead of… whatever the hell that is.
Cthulhu apparently can’t let any thread go without it becoming all about him and his soap box.
Why, it is almost like he is a practitioner of some ancient, weird, insidious, and insane belief system…
Plus the whole delusion of grandeur thing…
I thought this post was about the bar shooting, also. But when you have a Commisar Clone on deck, it’s always intended to control the conversation, with no understanding of how other people are trying to express their emotions over something as heinous as this event.
Squidward, you are missing the whole point, which is legal immigrants verses illegal aliens.
Nice!
(Grabs popcorn)
Do you have a chiropractor on call to help you with all those strains you get from jumping to conclusions?
For someone who has no idea the ethnicity, age, gender, or much else about any of the posters here, you certainly have a way of claiming stuff about us without any thing to substantiate your clams except wishful thinking.
But then, your side of the aisle has a long history of such things. It was your people who supported the Klan, opposed equal rights for persons of color, and every other use of the Constitution to apply to all of us. Now you want to falsely claim otherwise? Not gonna work. We know better and can’t be fooled as easily as the useful idiots your side breeds.
You are at the wrong blog … drive 3,000 miles due west and look for the Huffington Post.
Lars?
For many years now in California, the amount of people taking FROM the system has been more than the people paying INTO the system.
Illegal immigrants are going to California because they know it’ll be safe for them and that it is a sanctuary state where you can do whatever you want as an illegal (including get a driver’s license….)
The majority of illegal immigrants to California aren’t coming from England, Ireland, etc., they’re coming from Mexico.
I’ve said for a long time now that Southern California is basically “North Mexico” because that’s how it is.
And you’re “implying” that people who don’t want ILLEGAL immigrants moving into their town, neighborhood, onto their street, makes them racist.
That’s the same dumb argument that was being made when Obama was first elected. “You don’t agree with Obama? That’s because you’re racist!” (Though it is perfectly acceptable for Louis Farrakhan to be anti-semite, VERY non-feminist, racist against white people – that don’t kiss his as that is, etc etc.)
As usual, lefties point fingers and make excuses rather than address the real issues.
Reality: Most of us don’t give a flip where illegals come from, their age, gender, or anything else. We don’t get to decide which folks decide to come here illegally. They do. It is not in the slightest racist for us to demand a secure border. We want protection from anyone who wants to break our laws to get here.
Well, just for the record, I make no apologies for not wanting Mexicans here. There are far too many of them. On the whole, they have not assimilated, offer nothing of value to the nation, and cause many more problems than they are worth. I am sick of seeing whatever that bastardization of Spanish is on American store signs and hearing it as an option when I call an American business. I am sick of Cinco de Mayo, of allowing Mexicans to vote for school officials and giving them driver’s licenses and the benefit of my tax dollars. I’m just sick of them. No apologies.
How about Lewiston Maine as little Mogadishu? Very common slang across the state by both parties. It’s called the truth.
I thought Minneapolis was Little Mogadishu?
Every state will have a plethora of colorful enclaves if the dems get their way.
Melting pot my ass.
They want segregation just like they always have.
If the underdogs assimilate and move up, they no longer need the Dem “Massa” as a patron and protector.
They cannot allow -that-.
this was the reason for -evil- crap like declaring illiteracy to be “Ebonics”. Likewise, declaring victims hither and yon, based solely on immutable characteristics, thus in perpetuity, requiring “Massa” to acknowledge “privilege” and thus “help” the (permanent) lessors.
same sheet, different day.
It’s a fact. What we used to call “assimilation” is now called “cultural appropriation”. That means you aren’t allowed to celebrate Cinco de Mayo if you’re not Mexican. Somehow, it’s still ok to get commode-hugging drunk, puking up Irish Car Bombs on ST. Patricks Day regardless of race, creed, color or ethnic heritage. Do you hear any Irish complaining? No. Why? Because we’re not pussies.
I believe the age old, simple concept is, divide and conquer.
It is. They elected the closeted anti-Semite Keith Ellison in congress with the openly anti-Semite Ilhan Omar.
The same guy who assaulted his ex-gf multiple times but it’s okay because he’s a Democrat or something.
Not quite true. I live in Left Angeles county. The original law banning high capacity magazines exempted magazines already in possession.
The lefties in Sacratomato passed a new law requiring law abiding citizens to turn in their legally owned high capacity magazines. The NRA and California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) sued and it is tied up in court with the judge keeping the law from being implemented.
The magazine size was relevant because reporters don’t have anything else to discuss. And also, they tend to get giddy and tingly when they address guns and gun issues.
Addressing people ‘issues’ is all about ‘well, he needed a shrink, obviously.’ That gets yawns instead of viewers.
The magazine size was relevant because the Sheriff did not have much information to put out during the press conference but after revealing to the press what kind of firearm was used he went on to add that through the state of California limits magazine sizes to 10 rounds the shooter had an extended magazine that exceeded that limit.
The sheriff felt it was relevant so he added it and the press with not much to report siezed in every thing he provided.
Of course you can just go on and blame the press for reporting the facts available to them.
I know how the press reporting facts makes them the enemy of the people in your circle.
Swing and a miss, sureshot. Missed the entire point of my comment. Here’s a link you might find useful:
https://www.rif.org
I recommended it to another of your ilk, but he was beyond saving.
My response was to Ex. Not you.
Nobody gives a crap what your target was, quigglethorpe.
Your only intention is trying to control how other people react and think and express themselves. You simply can’t handle reality very well, so kindly piss off home to your mommie, where you belong.
Magazine capacity is only relevant is it was used in the crime, not very successfully I might add. Assuming the extended magazine was of the thirty round variety, common wisdom states that he should have been able to murder more people. But he got no more than twelve, thirteen if we include the shooter. So, the guy was either a piss poor shot, something a Marine would decry them being riflemen and all, or the magazine capacity had something to do with it, those extended Glock magazines being known to cause malfunctions. So, it’s possible that the high capacity magazine actually saved lives in this case. there’s your relevance, pinhead.
Most of those gimick-mags are barely better than the post-ban ten-rounders, and some are decidedly -not-.
Many of the self-made kit-guns are not even 80% usable. There is a -huge- difference between a CNC mill and a half-fast improv based on a worn-out cheap-grade hobby drill press.
Gah.
I have seen some of these “frankenguns” at the range I occasionally supervise. Not pretty. Not at all.
Occasionally, one sees a decent one.
A malfunction with the magazine seems a stretch. There were apparently 10-12 people wounded in addition to the 12 killed. Reports have also said Long shot the sheriff’s sergeant four or five times. On the other hand, it seems to me when you have that amount of gunfire in a crowded bar, anything is possible including one or more victims getting hit with the same round.
Another interesting factor is that Long apparently shot the bar’s bouncer first before barging in. Which means, in theory, he could have come in with an arsenal instead of just smoke grenades and a Glock. Which makes the size of the magazine a relatively minor detail.
Actually, greater than 10 round magazines are not “illegal” to possess in California pending a court decision. Not that it really matters in this case.
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/courts/sd-me-magazine-ruling-20180717-story.html
Possession of one acquired within the years since this whack job left AD is still illegal. Only the grandfathered mags under the old law can be legally possessed. The old law still prohibited plugging one into a semi-auto weapon.
True, but since with most magazines it’s impossible to tell when they were acquired the law is virtually unenforceable. However they did tuck a nice illegal law regarding “high capacity” magazines being a “nuisance” and therefore subject to seizure and destruction without charges.
Oh, I see. In your perfect world, Squigglebthu, there is no such thing as ‘carried a dozen 10-round magazines in his pockets’ doesn’t exist.
The phrase “30 shots from a pistol with extended mags” doesn’t matter to anyone but the press. It is just as easy to shoot 30 rounds from 3 ten round magazines as firing 30 rounds from an extended magazine. It’s SIZE of the magazine that matters here.
That’s what far too many can’t grasp. The difference between three ten round magazines and one thirty round magazine is approximately two seconds, the time it takes to load each new magazine.
-two- second mag changes? I am old and arthritic, and the timer has my mag changes under a half second.
The trick for slow folks is to pull the new mag before the one in the gun is empty, and have it up to the gun as you hit the mag release.
Young/fit and skilled folks can get well under one second mag changes keeping both hands on the gun until empty.
Go watch IDPA, USPSA, and Wild Bunch matches. The top folks have to be seen to be believed.
Practice.
Taking six seconds to change mags would assure a failure to qualify during a MEU-SOC Dynamic Assault shooting package. 🙂
Six seconds? Either the observer was experiencing dramatic event time distortion, or shitbag had a significant stoppage to clear.
No way.
They gotta prop up the narrative, as always. Rumor has it Gavin Newsom is gleefully sliding around on the floor and making snow angels in the innocent blood in anticipation of his next unconstitutional gun grab.
The sheriff put out that statement the press reported it.
Watch the interview and stop being a jackass.
squidbuttwister, you are the only jackass on this post at this time.
That still doesn’t answer the question of relevance. The size of the magazine used is irrelevant. The difference between one thirty round magazine and three ten round magazines is approximately two seconds, the time it takes to change the magazine. There’s your relevance.
Or, via mag bans and other stupidity, we will teach the shitbags to carry multiple firearms and “New York Reload”.
Swapping guns is -way- faster for the novice/idiot, with very little effort.
And nobody gives a flying fart in space as to the object of your response, squiggledthug. Your sole intent is to cause disruption and nought else.
Given the lamestream media’s notorious ignorance re. firearms, I’m waiting to see whether this “extended mag” was a *legit* extended mag (as in, protrudes below the grip frame), or just the *standard* mag (13 rounds, in a land that criminalizes anything over 10).
Not that it matters as to the heinousness of the crime. (See Elliot Rodger, the Isla Vista shooter. Carried 400 rounds—all in 40, CA-legal 10-rd mags.)
I heard the shooter had a left foot. But the media forgot to focus in on that. Surely it had EVERYTHING to do with him being a mad man.
It was magazine size.
Cthulahu has covered it very well.
He also had two hands. Was that featured in the press? No.
I’ll bet he ate carrots!
I bet he drank dihydrogen monoxide as well!
Uh oh. I eat carrots. I eat them everyday. I hope the police are gentle when they come talk to me and do the anal probing to see if I have the PTSD.
Interesting in one of the photos there is a guy with his shirt off and a huge EGA tatatoo but the article doesn’t mention he’s a marine because it wouldn’t be a negative depiction.
Evil exists. Can’t legislate it away.
He doesn’t count. He was helping, and therefore irrelevant.
I see a picture of him carrying a casualty out and then appears to be rendering First Aid.
https://metro.co.uk/2018/11/08/marine-with-ptsd-identified-as-gunman-who-went-into-student-bar-and-killed-12-8118604/
Have to go to the UK press to see that. They don’t know.
Here’s something about one of the heroes of the night.
https://www.foxnews.com/us/california-officer-killed-in-bar-shooting-died-a-hero-called-his-wife-before-heading-in-sheriff-says
Rest easy Sergeant Helus.
Indeed, rest in peace Sergeant Helus. God be with your family.
“No greater love…” God Speed and Farewell Sergeant Helus. His Peace and Comfort the Family.
Clearly Cthulhu didn’t have to work at Starbuck’s today.
I propose a limit on how many times he/she/it can post on any one topic – as a whole person – not just each personality.
Nah. He is comedy gold.
Fair enough.
Yeah we don’t have too many chew toys left. Lars got ban hammered, rightfully so, Bernath is still flying at minus 6′ AGL, and a bunch of the others are either locked up or on probation. Still think that ol’ ctupatooie is masochistic and gets off on the deserved abuse. Sad but funny as hell that someone could be that damaged and still operate a key board. It still needs to read and comprehend the TAH FAQs. YMMV
I’ve got nothing to add here really, but I would like to offer my thoughts and prayers to the friends and families of Sergeant Helus and the other victims.
Damn shame this.
The rest of you, I ask you, please be civil to one another. Help a stranger. Check in on your neighbor. Call a loved one that lives far away. The only thing that’ll conquer evil like this is love…
Which leads me to a more pragmatic notion. If you are capable, sound mind and body and all that, learn how to shoot, train to deal with situations such as this. Get in the mindset that if your at one of these things, know how you’ll react.
Anyway, looking at the pictures, seems like people stepped up and helped the medicals.
I don’t know if it’s just hope but some of those citizens look like Service Members.
Regardless, Bravo and Thank You.
Take care of yourselves.
^this^
That’s good sound advice, Roh-Dog.
Thank you.
And let’s try to find a way to stop these things before they happen, instead of reacting to what happened. Legislation is not going to do it. It has to come from people themselves.
I saw one news blurb where the mother of one victim does not want “thoughts and prayers”. She wants gun control NOW. I’m just sad.
…and don’t anyone dare to ask exactly what she means by “gun control”
I can’t really fault a crime victim’s knee jerk reaction.
I can fault the shameless self-promotion of the politicians who stand in the blood of the victims and spout the same talking points over and over.
I caught a brief clip today, interview with the father of one of the victims. Wouldn’t comment on the shooter because he (the shooter) had parents that are just as upset as the victim’s parents. Pretty impressive.
Been coming to this blog since its inception. Seen many dipshits come and many leave. Don’t know who this “chutl” smuck is and I really don’t give a rats ass. Looks like he’s a worthy “cat toy” though. As far as this 5150 shit stain goes, it was just on news he was a less than stellar Marine. I’ll risk it all and SWAG that this m’fer had serious discipline problems before he enlisted and thankfully or not, at least the Marines seen it coming and shipped his outta the Corps.
I concur with your opinion, Streetsweeper.
His lack of virtue and honor was fulled by his PTSD, but I would say Baby Boomers are partly responsible too.
I would say Baby Boomers have a piece of the pie here in this because of the way the economy and society has been structured to be unfair to millennials. You know this guy was capable of living a good life. The reason he was probably living at home is because you can’t afford to live on your own in CA, even with a decent job.
Think of the sense of shame he must have had being a combat living at home at almost 30 years old with his mother. The shacks they sell in that area are one million dollars minimum thanks to Baby Boomers. These NIMBY Baby Boomers won’t allow millennials to live nearly as good a life as they had. You know when the Baby Boomers moved out to CA or grew up here they could buy a home at 21, have children and live a good life without having a college degree. My uncle bought a home, had children and bought a 3 bedroom house. He worked in a Vons and his wife rarely worked at all. She did some part time minimum wage jobs. Both of them were low skilled labor. These days you and your partner need good paying jobs just to afford an apartment.
“You know this guy was capable of living a good life. The reason he was probably living at home is because you can’t afford to live on your own in CA, even with a decent job”.
No, actually we don’t know that. There is speculation about his time the USMC, and why he left when he did. There is at least one report that the police/sheriff’s department was called on him, likely more reports than that, from what the sheriff said about him.
I’ve lived on my own in California with a decent job since the age of 20, no roommates. Shit’s expensive around here, sure, but it’s doable. All you have to do is not be too stupid with your money and live within your means.
It also depends on where you live. Some areas are more expensive than others. Anywhere near the beach, for example, will cost an arm and a leg, so if you’re one of those people who has to live by the beach, it’s gonna hurt financially. I never had that problem, as I don’t surf and generally go to the beach maybe once a year to make sure they haven’t moved it (I prefer altitude and pine trees; that’s just me). The further inland you go, the more affordable it becomes.
This asshole was simply an asshole who decided to take out his assholery on others like a total asshole. His time in the Marines didn’t cause this, and neither did California’s real estate market.
Once again you proved why you are correctly considered a moron. That must be what the “m” stands for in your handle.
Yeah, I’m a baby boomer and it’s my fault.
Worked hard all my life from paper boy to lead engineer on some pretty neat stuff.
Struggled to pay off a mortgage, student loans (I paid mine back), VA loan (I paid mine back) and even found time to volunteer a year in sunny South Vietnam.
And I did it all just piss off millenials.
I wallow in my hard earned excess as I sit back and watch millenials weep in their cardboard box home on the street.
Blames others? Check.
Whines and moans? Check.
Assumes PTSD w/o factual basis? Check.
Uses “partner” instead of spouse? Check.
Hey, stooped m0311: listen up. The ‘shacks’ they sell in that area are overpriced because millennials are as stoopid as you are and make massively high paychecks, which they spend like water.
Baby boomers had nothing to do with that, you idiot. Millennial have raised the price of housing everywhere, which hits hard on REAL homeowners in established neighborhoods.
Blame the greed of realtors and developers for the rise. None of that had ANYTHING to do with the Baby Boomer generation, which is mostly retired now, you disastrously uninformed and dimwitted clodpole.
Really, before you run your mouth next time, zip it shut first.
Most people who actually know something about the California real estate market would probably disagree. Except for the generally false stereotype of Silicon Valley, which is not Ventura County, most Millennials are not spending money like water. Nor is m0311 correct in using ageism to place blame on Baby Boomers.
Most of California’s high housing prices are due to lack of supply, which is caused by a variety of factors including environmental CEQA restrictions, stricter building codes to meet earthquake standards, the arguable effectiveness of “smart growth” land-use planning, and so forth.
The literal bottom line is that California developers generally find building 2500 square-foot suburban McMansions to have much better financial margins than trying to jump through hoops to provide “affordable” urban multi-family housing for poor people with close to no margins at all.
Writes like Cunthulu. Just toss in a few “It should be noted that” and there’s no telling them apart. Devoid of thought.
I’m still waiting for “empirical data”.
Funny how he speaks about his uncle and aunt and what they managed to do and then turns around and blames them for the problem. As to PTSD, seems to know a lot about that also, wonder if he has ever been tested by the VA as to that, as now am set up for second exam here for it, probably will be same as first was 10 years ago when was given physical by VA for PTSD and Agent Orange, stand up fully dressed, turn around and sit back down, nope, none seen, was never in any area of Agent Orange was used (Phucat RVN), dang that Nurse Practitioner is good. As to Moron statement, careful where you go with this line of thought as a group of us were Drafted and sent to Vietnam courteously by Secretary McNamara in 1967 when he requested that they mainly lower the IQ standards and a few physical standards so as to be able to draft more bodies for the war. End result was we were tagged as McNamara’s Morons and seeing as to I have scoliosis as well as had cartilage removed from my knee removed before I entered service the nurse practitioner told me I was one of this select group. Interesting as to where was I when this wonderful event happened, duh, let me think, enlisted in 1965, school, OJT, wait I know, that Desert Oasis, Phucat AB RVN, guess I ought to change my ID here to McNamara’s Moron.
This baby boomer says you’re full of shit. Each and every human on earth is responsible for their own actions and inactions, success or failure. Maybe I should blame my parents for not making me a trust-fund baby. Can’t be my fault that I don’t have a platinum Visa and checking account in 7 figures. Maybe I should’ve listened to John “I was in Viet Nam, you know” Kerry and stayed in college instead of getting stuck in Iraq. Society is to blame, I deserve better!
Man, sure is gettin deep here, hard to keep up with my shovel here as to the big pile of B/S going on.
Local news just ran shtibag’s last online post, which was a gun control screed and a “see what you let happen”
