In South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve, an elephant uses its trunk to create a dust shower. Elephants use dust to protect their skin from bug bites and the sun’s harsh rays.

On an administrative note, my computer is deadlined and I’m working on the POS that I replaced. All I did was update my new computer from a Dell upload and it tanked. Screw Dell. I’ll do my best with this old POS, until they get here to fix the new computer.

Let me break in here with some serious stuff all need to read and respond to. A Vietnam Veterans Commemoration program on March 29 at the UALR Jack Stephens center in Little Rock hosted by the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs is a great example of our government minimizing the sacrifices of every man and women who served in Vietnam. Arkansas DVA has nothing to do with the content and they are simply responding to a national observance formulated by the Veterans Observance Commission. All of us know there are two categories of Vietnam Veterans, those who actually served in Harm’s way (i.e. in-country) who are entitled to be called Vietnam veterans and those who served during the period. They are refereed to as Vietnam-era veterans. What this commission has done is deem all who served in the armed forces from 1955 – 1975 as Vietnam War Veterans. They plan to give all a lapel pin that says Vietnam War Veteran. A bona-fide Vietnam War Veteran is someone who served “in-country” for 90 days, or a shorter period if wounded or killed, and those others who engaged in combat missions from external locations. I was in Vietnam for a brief period on the way to Bangkok, and the return we had to overfly Saigon because of a Tet offensive. I am NOT a Vietnam War Veteran and find it very offensive to be categorized as one by this commission. Moreover, I was on the flight line at Hickam AFB for the return of every POW. My belief and those of every veteran I had discussed this with is the blanket recognition afforded by the wording of the Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin is a disgrace and an affront to the sacrifices of these brave men. Military imposters and stolen valor are already enough of a problem in our country and all this blanket recognition does is empower people to make false claims. You’re a Vietnam Veteran too! Just pay the fee and here’s your Vietnam Veteran ballcap. I saw a guy the other day with a patch the size of a hubcap on his back. It read Vietnam Veteran. On the front of the coat was another patch, and he was wearing a Vietnam Veteran ballcap. Looked like he just joined VVA. All I could do was shake my head. I didn’t have to ask him a thing to see that with his spanking new regalia, he was as much truly a Vietnam Veteran as Hanoi Jane is a patriot’s patriot.

The closest I got to Vietnam was Fort Wolters, Texas. I did wear the W.O.C. (Warrant Officer Candidate), briefly, but never completed the course (W.O.F.T.). I wound up assigned to the 561st MP Co. in Fort Myer, Virginia for the rest of my active duty Army time.

Two of my cousins, Marines both, were killed fighting in Vietnam. How the hell can I claim their valor?

To be honest, things could be better around the Compound. My favorite son-in-law has a pacemaker being installed next week, and I have a biopsy on a spot on the prostate the day after – but we are not expecting anything to come of it.

But our deployed son is healthy. The grandkids are all growing well. The other kids (in-law, by-law, and out-law) are all fine – and God is still in control.

Well best wishes to you and your favorite son-in-law…I’m not much for prayer, but I’ll do my best to send appropriate positive thoughts your way.

Had my own excitement regarding a cancer concern for myself, and then later in the year for my wife…it keeps you on point at times and fortunately both concerns came to naught and we are both healthy and solid at this time.

Here’s hoping for a similar good outcome for all involved on your end.

Hi Graybeard, I myself have had prostate cancer. They had to remove it 15 years ago! All went well, then I had to fight bladder cancer for the last 4 years! But, after 4 surgeries and 8 rounds of chemo, my last lab test was cancer free! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions? I have been thru it all………
I will be praying for all of you! Tell them to give you some sedation if they are going to take prostate biopsies of your prostate! It really hurts when they go in your asshole and punch a hole thru to your prostate to snatch out a sample! They took 18 biopsies out of mine! Good Luck my Friend!!

I had a series of prostate biopsies about 20 years ago, so I’ve had the experience of getting stuck in the asshole.

What is new to me this go-around is that they’ve taken a sample of the native flora and are going to tailor the antibiotics to minimize problems with the natives.

It’ll be local & I expect to come on in to work afterwards – to a padded chair I might add.

The doctor thinks the chances are pretty low that it is anything to be worried about – better to know than to have a bad surprise. Lost a good friend and mentor to a fast-moving prostate cancer 25 years ago.

Am once again wondering what it was earlier in the week that I thought would be great for discussion on the WOT. Probably something extremely profound. Uh-huh.

Been raining a lot here. Creeks are running fine but a drain was blocked from the kennel. Soooooo, there I was in the pouring rain this morning, slinging mud and debris. Drain running well enough for now to keep the kennel from flooding. Whew! Will fine tune it later.

It was a nice twofer, though. Was able to use the dirt/rocks from the trench beside the kennel to fill a couple of holes in the yard. Temp dropping outside, so very glad that little chore is finished. For now.

No cookies, but did the cocoa thing, although these days it is heated chocolate almond milk instead of the “real thing.”

Tried making old fashioned cocoa using the plain almond milk. It was delicious. But after trying just heating the chocolate “milk,” it’s just not worth the trouble to mix it myself. Not quite as good as cocoa made with whole milk, but much better than the powdered stuff. Really want to try the dark chocolate version, but don’t see that very often.

As a country and as individuals, we need to be better aware of how our views are shaped. It’s not about D’s or R’s, it’s about the foundations of what an American election entails.

I’d say there’s a pretty big operational difference between giving money to a candidate, and a coordinated intelligence operation where foreign agents impersonated Americans (complete with stolen social security numbers, bank accounts, etc.) in order to influence an election by targeting swing states with propaganda.. and, you know, giving a candidate a bribe in the hope of later action via a well-regarded charity operated in her name.

I loathe Hillary Clinton, but the Clinton Foundation seems to be well-reviewed everywhere I look. If she did indeed take money for favors, that’s obviously terrible, but I see no proof of that. I do see plenty of evidence of Russian influence.

The second thing is, Clinton thought she’d win. Most people did. Why would she spend funds if she was going to win anyway? So even if she got illicit funds for some reason, it’s doubtful they were used.

The FBI now needs to close the investigation of Trump et alia, and refocus its efforts towards the Russians.

I’ve never said President Trump colluded with the Russians. Personally, I don’t think he did – I don’t think his ego would allow him to ask for help. But I wouldn’t put it past some of the people on the campaign.

But it’s worth pointing out this isn’t the end of the investigation – it’s still on-going. Look at investigations by special prosecutors over the years – they run for years, and indictments happen throughout. This is just another day in the investigation.

There’s still more to come, surely. Maybe total vindication for the Trump camp, maybe not. I’m all for seeing this through either way.

Once you’re sitting down and recovered from such utterly shocking possibilities, I’ll also add that I think political operatives within the DNC might’ve not played by the rules either! Technically it’s not breaking a law for Donna Brazile to pass information questions on to the Clinton camp -even if not Clinton herself- but, yes, I wouldn’t put it past the campaign to have stuff like that happen, uh.. comrade.

Come on. Acknowledging that something is a possibility for a handful of people is not the same as saying our whole system is in shambles.

To make a bigger recipe, use a larger baking tin and double everything. Cut the baked quiche into portions and top with more cheese. The World’s Best Crabcakes
Keep it simple.
1 pound crab meat.
2 eggs
1/4 cup mayo
Juice and zest from 1 lemon
a few dashes Worcestershire sauce
S&P
Old Bay
Panko crumbs as needed
Flour
Mix eggs, mayo, juice and zest, Wooster sauce in a bowl. Add S&P, Old bay, mix.
Gently fold in the crab meat.
Add just enough Panko to firm up the mix. Form into patties and dust with the flour. Refrigerate for at least an hour (this is key for pan frying- skip flour, etc if broiling).
Cook ’em up. Pan fry in butter or a neutral oil for about four minutes a side, or broil until brown, flip, repeat.
Bask in the accolades of your family and friends. Lemon juice or tartar sauce are acceptable, if you put ketchup on them I’ll hunt you down like a cur.

Reading that makes me wish Mrs. GB liked seafood.

The only fish she likes is fried catfish, preferably wild-caught and deep fried. In our first church we had a church member who ran a trotline in the local man-made lake. The lake covered ground he had hunted as a boy, so he knew what was under the lake without any electronics, and knew where and when to set his lines.

He kept trying for a 100 lb cat, and only got to 97 lbs. He’d throw a 45-pounder back so it could get big enough to be worth eating.

I helped him skin many a catfish, and we’d lay those things out on the kitchen table and cut steaks out 2″x2″x5″ in size. Roll them in his cornbread batter and throw them in the deep fryer – Hooooeeeeeeee, that was some eatin’!

Man that sounds great! Maybe make some small crab fritters as a side for the Mrs? Prepare as if pan frying, but make ’em golf ball size and deep fry.
Anyway, it’s not summer here until there’s crab cakes, silver queen corn on the cob, and sliced tomatoes on the plate.

That quiche is like culinary velcro; so many ways to change it up. Wilt a pan full of spinach leaves down with olive oil, S&P and add it in. Sauteed mushrooms (add a fat spoonful of thyme, it goes with shrooms like basil with tomatoes), sliced black olives. Change the bacon to ham sliced into cubes, or a big hand full of shelled, de-veined shrimp. Really anything you can think of going on a pizza will work.

My sister told me at Christmas that she was thinking about putting in her paperwork for retirement, but wasn’t happy because she didn’t know what she’d do with her time. I told her to think about what she loves to do the most before she makes any decisions. She calls me on my birthday, I ask her if she’s put in the paperwork yet, she says, no, because she isn’t sure she wants to just yet and she loves her work, and I told her there’s your answer.
Find something that you love to do and love what you’re doing, and everything else will follow.

I know exactly what you speak of. I retired at age 60 (10 years ago) and never looked back.

I can be found out in my woodshop building things & making fine sawdust; working on the yard, garden & fine tuning the house; helping out neighbors, friends and relatives with their projects; fishing; spending time target shooting; going to a casino every now & then; baking & cooking up a storm at times; car shows; and occasionally doing inappropriate things at time (hey, a guy has to have fun once in awhile ;))

I’ve never looked back and am always looking forward. Way too much to see & do to lay on the couch. (smile)

I’ve had a problem or two with these new ‘puters – including a Dell laptop.

Sometimes I regret not having salvaged Dad’s old PDP-11 when I had a chance.

I had to move to a newer box to load Windows on just because my tax software would no longer work with the old version of Windows – and the don’t write it for a *nix flavor.

If Jonn were nearby, I know a real good pc repairman. I can do a little on those machines but have more experience with the Big Blue boxes.

I have no idea, AW1Ed. I only convey information. My guess would be that he is either one of the few people left in the world who uses a 4 mm tape reader, and NASA should contact him about that in case another antique satellite reboots itself, OR like me, he has a floppy disc reader drive and saves lots of stuff on that, then gives it to one of his scribes to convert to whatever MSFT’s current Word level may be.

I am still heavily involved with my Presairo. We’ve have a strong relationship for lo, these many years, and yet, while my access to the palantir of internet still exists, it could be faster if I used a newer model. (Not till next year! I have other things that need attention first, like two new flushers. 🙂

Personally, I try to follow a couple of rules when it comes to the reliability of computer equipment.

The first, common in the corporate IT world, is to not install a Microsoft operating system until after the first service pack has been released. With the release of Windows 8 and 10, Microsoft has switched to a cycle of continuous upgrades which is, IMHO, not a good idea. I have multiple machines running versions of Windows from XP to 10 and find Win 7 with SP1 to be the best of the bunch.

Over time, I’ve also found that what creates a lot of problems is the bloatware/crapware/trialware vendors try to include with machines shipped. A better alternative is to start with a clean install of just the operating system, and work from there. Although this might mean having to buy a copy of Windows, and maybe having somebody install it for you, it’s likely worth it in the longer term.

The approach is common when building a Unix system or one of its Linux variants. You try to give such systems just what they need, and nothing they don’t need to start. You can then improve it over time. A typical result is a system that can run trouble-free for years.

It has been confirmed, (to me, by a friend in that area), that Dirt Dart Dan failed to set a new “low altitude flight record”, as the treetops slowed both his descent and forward speed, so that he and his flying machine barely moved the dead pine needles on the ground. Nary a gouge in the South Florida Sand. Poor guy couldn’t even succeed in death.

As of Feb. 13th, the Florida Department of Corrections shows ol Stretched, Stolen Valorist Kyle Barwan to be off the work detail, (where the guys get some outside air), and back inside the facility at Century C.I. I guess that he missed Bubba and that made him not able to do the little bit of work offered, and he was able to rejoin him in their shared bunk.

Been grieving the possible loss of a good friend. No, not a loss due to death, but one from TDS. We shall see.

For decades we have maintained a very good friendship based on things other than politics. Many years ago we agreed that we agreed upon enough things to remain great friends. We just ignore the differences.

Had noticed subtle things in the past few months, but there was a complete meltdown recently. I am just continuing to act as if nothing is wrong. Don’t really want to lose a friend, but seriously?

I suspect that others have faced such a predicament with a long-time friendship.
