Thursday morning feel good stories
Bert sends us a link to a story from Putnam County, West Virginia;
After she heard the noise at the window, [Yvonda “Bonnie” Gatens] called 911 and grabbed her gun.
“I told him ‘you’re going to die’ and he fell over to the side,” Gatens explained to WSAZ.
Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the woman’s call, but they were unable to find the person.
Despite losing a sense of security, Gatens is relieved everything ended up OK. Now she’s encouraging her neighbors to keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
“If you come in here, it’s going to be you or me, and I’ll see to it that it won’t be me!” Gatens said.
From Mishawaka, Indiana;
A 13-year-old male was shot and killed during an attempted home invasion at Hickory Village Apartments in Mishawaka.
His name is being withheld pending family notification. The teen’s age was released by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday at the complex in the 4300 block of North Hickory.
Mishawaka police on the scene told NewsCenter 16 that the deceased person was the attempted home invasion suspect.
From Hyattsville, Maryland;
Friends of a babysitter who were inside a home overnight Monday along Sligo Parkway in Hyattsville say two men appeared to be breaking into a truck parked in the driveway when a man inside the home grabbed a gun from the second floor.
Neighbors who don’t want to be identified noticed something was wrong next door.
“I heard two noises. An officer asked me about it and I tell him it was two gunshots,” the neighbor said.
Authorities say a 911 call came from inside the house and police found a man shot in the driveway.
“Our Detective believes a resident inside the house shot and killed a man outside of the home,” Prince George’s County Police Corporal Tyler Hunter said.
Police believe a second suspect got away and ABC7 News is being told that people inside the home, including at least four children, saw a second man running from the scene.

A 13 y.o?
“Play stoopid games, win stoopid prizes.”
And a “wrongful death” civil lawsuit from the yute’s family in 3…..2……
Can you say Ghetto Lottery? I knew you could!
Truly sad – but maybe some of the students at his school will learn something about life by his demise.
13 y/o? Now he’s dead? Well, on the gallows humor side, he saved the taxpayer the cost of potentially decades of incarceration. I guess he could have squared himself away and never committed another crime, but, uh, …
The liberals will demand to know why he just wasn’t wounded, why he had to be killed. You know, shoot to wound. For some people, everything they know about matters such as this, they learned from TV. Remember the old cowboy westerns, in which the sheriff would shoot the gun from the hand of the bad guy? If only it were that easy.
I can shoot a smiley face in my target, a la Mel Gibson.
Of course, I’m shooting at 10 yards with a Mk III Target .22 from a rest, with a red dot sight…
Your’e right HMC. All 50 of Republics’s 3 Mesqueteer B western flicks plus the Monogram B western flicks all have Bob Steele, Ray “Crash” Corrigan, Bob Livingston, Tom Tyler, Johnny Mack Brown, Tim Holt,Buck Jones, Duncan Renaldo Plus Jean Autrey, Roy Rogers,Lash Larue, Etc. They all made it look real easy.
“Late Wednesday afternoon, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office identified the teen as 13-year-old Tyshawn Taylor…On Thursday, the South Bend Community School Corporation confirmed that Taylor was an 8th grade student at Edison Intermediate Center.”
Photo of Tyshawn Taylor at the link above. Don’t know what the TAH Scrabble score is on him, tho’
Goddamn “######” of whatever variety. You are correct, having a provident father influence makes a tremendous difference in the early development of children.
My brother is a retired Senior Chief and now a member of the Corpus Christi, TX police department. Those guys go way out of their obligation to try and steer wayward youths to a course of life that might have a better outcome.
Little shit matters. Showing a kid how to make buck cutting the grass, wash a car, pick up some trash, anything that brings prosperity to their pocket without violating the law is a step.
13 year old kids have their needs and they will find a way to have them met, gang related, sports, academic achievement, family approval or wherever they can find it, they will find it.
Most folks join the Military, or the EMS and LEO communities for the same reason: to make a difference and help others.
There are exceptions, of course, but the point is they are exceptions. I know and have known a bunch of LEOs through the years, was [very briefly] an EMT-B, and known and a few military types as well, and know who I want around when someone needs help. (Hint: it ain’t someone in a pussyhat.)

“…it’s going to be you or me, and I’ll see to it that it won’t be me!” – Ms. Gatens
Damn straight! You go, girl!
In re: the 13-year-old – they start young these days, don’t they? That’s even younger than William Bonney’s career start. If I didn’t know better, I’d say the kid was either recruited by some gangbangers or something similar, and his family didn’t know what he was up to. But you tell me what some 13YO kid is doing trying to loot cars in the freezing cold and dark. I blame the family for this, if they even exist.
I’ll bet you a paycheck against your favorite stew that his biological father is nowhere to be found or incarcerated.
Somebody is going to be charged with manslaughter, if not homicide, for the Hyattsville shooting. Crimes against property do not raise a justifiable defense for invoking a firearm.
Worse for the shooter is that the shooting occurred in Maryland. It won’t surprise me if the homeowner or firearm owner is also charged for failing to secure the firearm.
Maryland the anti 2nd State. The Incident Paging Network texts I get are from Baltimore and Chicago which lead the U.S. with shootings but you won’t hear from the Lame street media about it, (CNN, MSNBC) unless it’s a white/black thing.
Tallywhagger is right
Maryland is a very anti gun state and will likely charge the shooter
Too bad it wasn’t Texas where you CAN shoot to defend property… but only at night!
Even here in Florida that would be a bad shoot
Defense of property is not a legal reason to use deadly force
Amen. Thanks for saying so.
Looking back on some of the foolish stuff I did as a teenager, I attribute my longevity to God’s angels.
Were it not for a very decent judge, I would have ended up in a correctional institution or the U.S. Army. I requested enlistment, the judge over-ruled and assigned a probation officer, instead. That probation officer “turned my life around”.
It was so easy that I went along with him. At 16, that guy became exactly the mediator in my life. I thank goodness for him and don’t even have the decency to remember his name. It was a long time ago.
The stuff I did did not warrant being shot or killed. It never occurred to me to shoot anyone and, in my naivety, I never expected for anyone to shoot me, either.
…but there was that one time at the drive in movie in Beltsville when the owner approached me for pissing in the brush at the back of the lot instead of marching way to the front and using the stinky concrete rest room. He had a gun. So did I. He never knew that. Life is good.
I love a happy ending.
