Shots fired at RAF Mildenhall

| December 18, 2017

Mick and Club Manager have sent us links to the news from England that a man pretending to be someone that he’s not (possibly a military officer) tried to force his way into RAF Mildenhall prompting US security personnel to fire at him. From Sky News;

A Pentagon spokesman in Washington said: “The security incident has been contained and a suspect has been apprehended.”

RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath, another US base next to it, have both been subjected to terror threats in the past few years.

Last year, a British-born “committed supporter” of Islamic State (IS) was jailed for life for planning a terrorist attack on five US Air Force bases in the UK, including RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath.

From the Daily Mail;

Police rushed to the Royal Air Force Mildenhall base in Suffolk to respond to the ‘significant security alert’ this afternoon and one man was arrested.

Shots were fired by American service personnel at about 1pm and the man was detained with cuts and bruises and taken into custody.

It has been claimed that the suspect is a British citizen who pretended to be someone he was not – possibly a senior military figure – to get through a checkpoint.

The liberals brilliant plan to bring in Muslims to get votes is worth the carnage to them. That’s why we here in the USA must never back down on our 2nd Amendment protections.

Gonna be an interesting week, kids:

This, the Atlanta airport fire where they still refuse to rule out terrorism, the train going off the tracks in WA on its inaugural run…

And it’s only Monday.

Graybeard

Yep.
Constant vigilance is indeed required of all freedom-loving folks around the world.

Apparently, there was a point where the redundant systems all fed through the same room.

And apparently, fire suppression there was inadequate.

And, golly gee, a fire….

The only reason I suspect this is just a freak accident, is that the timing was exceedingly poor for a hypothetical bad actor with such intimate inside knowledge. Mondays are much busier. Next weekend would have been worse.

So, could just be some dummy ran both sets of power lines in the same convenient rack on the conduit/room, the one well away from the sprinklers.

Stupid still explains more mayhem than malice, by far.

We would fly into Mildenhall from other places. Strange thing have fallen out of P3’s. Used to be a quiet place where beer was seen as so much more than just a breakfast drink.

I found out what a Fag was while I was there. Turned out I enjoyed Fags most of my life.

Hondo

Fag, (presumably) short for Fagot – the NATO designation for the MiG-15.

That is what you were talking about enjoying, right DH? The MiG-15 certainly was a beautiful and capable aircraft.

(smile)

Atkron

As a regular watcher of old britcoms on PBS…I believe Dave is referring to smokes.

Hondo

You don’t say. Or maybe that should be “Yer Bloody Well Right”. (smile)

Cris

from fagot – a bundle of sticks, twigs, or branches bound together and used as fuel, a fascine, a torch, etc.

Claw

Wait, I thought a Fagot was a bundle of sticks.

Crossword clue question/answer.

Hondo

Also correct. And who knows – maybe DH really likes playing with sticks. (smile)

Dave Hardin

They are both correct. It might shock a few people but I might have imbibed a time or two.

Somewhere there might be those who could attest to me Bumming a Fag.

CCO

Huh; I just learned something. In the US “fagot” is the correct spelling for what the British spell “faggot.” Weird—it makes more sense with two gs; kinda like ‘worshiped’ and ‘worshiping’ are the “preferred” US spellings.

Ex-PH2

Definitely cannot afford to drop a vigilant stance…EVER.

Update:

Royal Air Force Mildenhall in Suffolk was placed on lockdown about 1 p.m. after a “significant incident” was reported, police said. The Pentagon urged people to avoid the area until the lockdown was lifted about an hour after the incident began.

A Ministry of Defense (MoD) source told Sky News a man rammed his car into the base’s gates while attempting to force his way through.

“Shots were fired by American service personnel and a man has been detained with cuts and bruises and taken into custody,” Suffolk police said in a statement.

Club Manager

As an Air Policeman who worked the gate in the days we had to be unarmed at two different RAF bases in England(59-61)but we were armed on the flight line and guarding nuke storage areas, I have to ask why was the perp not DOT? Do the security forces not have to qualify with all of that fancy shit they pack?

Windshields are actually really good at deflecting rounds. Assuming they were going for a kill shot and not trying to disable the vehicle.

11B-Mailclerk

Glass is tricky stuff, especially windshields. If you think about it, it is intended to stop light fast things from entering the passenger compartment, and most are sloped enough for serious rounds to deflect significantly.

Mass tends to be helpful in getting through. More mass tends to also deflect less.

But windshield glass is truly remarkable stuff.

Found it:

Actual testing results shown. The whole site is a gold mine.

Theboxotruth is awesome. For a long time people would send him stuff, ammo or things to shoot and he’d post results. I wish I lived closer to him, he sounds like a really fun guy. 🙂

CCO

Oh yeah; fun stuff & real data.

Graybeard

Not knowing much about this particular scenario, am I not correct for believing that the angle of the shot relative to the windshield glass plays a role?

Would not a shot from an elevated position which struck at close to a 90-degree angle to the glass have a decent chance of penetrating – especially using the FMJ ammo that Geneva says is humane?

I would also expect that after the first few rounds compromised the integrity of the windshield glass later rounds would be more likely to penetrate into the interior of the vehicle.

I have no experience in shooting into windshield glass, but have tried to break the glass on a burning vehicle to extract the occupants – it is not a matter of simply hitting the glass hard.

Any of the glass in American automobiles (and I suppose most European vehicles as well) is, indeed, remarkable stuff.

11B-Mailclerk

check that link, above. Actual testing. Surprising results.

Graybeard

Thanks for the link!

Ex-PH2

Auto glass is difficult to break because it’s tempered glass, and also is made of laminated layers. One reason for this is that prior to the 1970s, auto glass would shatter in an accident and do as much damage as the accident itself, or even more.
This more modern stuff is called safety glass for a reason.

The Brits allow our troops to be armed?

NavyEODguy

Glass breaking 101.

Items needed:

1 small ballpeen hammer,
4-6 old spark plugs
A hard surface

Using quick light strokes, strike the “glass” off the spark plugs into small pieces.

Gather up about a dozen pices (each piece about 1/2 the size of a green pea)

Stand back about 6 to 8 feet from a junker car side window.

Throw the pieces as hard as you can at the window.

Something about the very small pieces of the ceramic hitting the glass causes a surprising breakage.

Used this technique several times when I was on active duty – always worked the first time. Unlike trying it with an auto-punch. An auto-punch always seemed to take 3-4 attempts.

Does work well on front or rear windshield. That laminated glass will “spiderweb” but not “pop” like side glass.
