Good guys with guns stop mass shooting

| November 28, 2017

Chooee sends us a link to the story of Robert Lorenzo Bailey Jr who took his .45 caliber pistol and several magazines full of ammunition and started blasting away in the parking lot of Schlenker Automotive in Rockledge, Florida. Bailey was able to kill one person and injure another before the employees of Schenkler sprang into action.

The manager of the shop, a concealed weapon permit holder, opened fire on Bailey who then charged the manager. The manager fled the parking lot with Bailey in hot pursuit, distracted from his attack in the parking lot. Another employee, who was also legally armed then engaged Bailey with gunfire and struck him twice, effectively ending his assault.

“If not for the brave, quick thinking of the employees at Schlenker, this could have been a lot worse,” [Rockledge police chief Joseph La Sata] said. “Mr. Bailey had multiple magazines on his person. He was intent on doing harm. The employees stepped up.”

Of course, you won’t read much about this in the national media because it wasn’t bloody enough, and then there’s the inconvenience of Americans protecting themselves before the police could arrive.

Roger Lee Smith, 50, was killed in the parking lot and another unnamed employee was paralyzed by his injuries resulting from Bailey’s murderous rampage.

But, but…I thought Whatshisname that tiara-wearing ladyboy tranny who flaunts his time in the Army said that good guys with guns are a myth! He’s a liberal, he’s a ladyboy tranny, and he says he was in the Army, so he can’t be wrong, right?

/sarc

Damn good job by both employees. It’s sad that two people were shot, but unlike in that shitty Tom Cruise movie you can’t read people’s minds. They responded at the first sign of trouble, which unfortunately was when this asshole started shooting people. Without them, their weapons, and their proficiency with same, this would’ve been a massacre that led national headlines for weeks.

Graybeard

Sounds like the manager engaged and distracted, then executed a strategic retreat while his coworker could then engage and neutralize the threat.

If that is correct, it appears they had some pretty good tactics in the playbook.

Fjardeson

I wonder if either of the good guys had military, LEO, or “GunSite type” training? Sounds like they had a plan or at the least improvised one…

Great Job!

Graybeard

Whether it was pre-formulated as a result of training or experience, or developed on the fly, it was a good one.

I think Sheriff Jim Wilson had an article a few months ago about preparing a plan. Sometimes that is all it takes.

Yef

Why is there no picture of the perp?

Flagwaver

It’s because he’s a Person of Color and the media can’t show it or they’ll be accused of racism.

Mason

Maybe these psycopaths that want to be famous wouldn’t be attracted to mass shootings if stories like this were more highly publicized. Absolutely hate how the media essentially glamorizes these muderers. They shouldn’t publish the shooters name or ask all those “what made him do it” questions.

The Other Whitey

“What made him do it?”

Hmm, I think I’ll go with “He’s a fucking asshole.”

Next question.

Mason

Couldn’t agree more, but it doesn’t stop the media from making front page headlines about the shooter’s history, life, and motives. Pretty sure the motive for shooting into a crowd is to kill someone. But I’m a simple man.

Ex-PH2

What made him do it?

He’s an attention whore.

Thunderstixx

He’s a whiny little slut with mommy issues and needs to have his ass shot years before he pulls something that costs other people dearly…

Daisy Cutter

Yeah, the media will create spashy graphics and endless specials. This will include a weekend biography of the shooter complete with interviews of his neighbors, scout troop leader, teachers, coach and friends from 8th grade. In a nutshell, a warped sense of instant celebrity status.

This is right before they ask “What would make him do this?”

Then, unable to just accept the fact that the shooter was crazy, they have to ask the followup provocative questions of 1) How crazy was he? and 2) What kind of crazy was he?

Mr. Pete

In the USA Today website about this crime there is a commentator/poster who says in her comment: “Imagine a world/country/state without guns.”

Mr. Pete would like to imagine a world/country/state without VIOLENT CRIMINALS.

The Other Whitey

“Imagine a place with no guns…”

Yeah, that was called “anywhere in the world prior to 1300AD.” Take Europe for example. It was a violent, Hobbesian place in which knights or men-at-arms could—and frequently did—rob, rape, and murder poor peasants when they felt like it.

The assailants, being essentially a warrior caste in all but name, had expensive arms (swords, axes, poelarms, maces, flails, daggers, etc.), armor that would shrug off a thrust by a pitchfork, and years of professional training required to use them effectively. The peasants had pitchforks and not much else. They had no rights and no means of doing anything about it. They could only hope that their local Lord was in a benevolent mood. You think a lack of guns means safety? Try facing a big bloodthirsty sonofabitch in plate armor coming at you with a zweihander!

America, and the cherished liberty and safety that make it what it is, wouldn’t be possible without guns. You want to know what a gun-free society looks like? Watch “Game of Thrones” and tell me how much better off the average resident of Westeros is for a lack of firearms.

Graybeard

You don’t have to go there, TOW.
To see a World Without Guns [in the hands of law-abiding citizens] look at:
Mexico
Cuba
Venezuela
Most of Africa
Vietnam
North Korea
China
The streets of Sweden
or a thousand other places.

Those who believe this would change are delusional.

Sparks

Great Britain also, but you got a damned good list going Graybeard of helpless populaces without a means to defend themselves from crime or their tyrannical governments. If we add Chicago, Detroit, Dearbornistan and most of metro USA, it gets worse.

bullnav

You know that in Detroit Rock City, the Chief of Police has encouraged folks to get their CPL because the cops can’t be everywhere…

Graybeard

I should have included GB.

Some years ago now, a family friend was in an exchange program with U. Glasgow for a year or so. She was walking home from a pub with a guy when he commented that if they were confronted by any yobs, he was expecting her to protect him.
Being a Texas girl, she was a bit taken aback and asked why not the other way around. His response was “because you carry a pocket knife.”
Yeah, make a gal real comfortable there, Jeeves.

Graybeard

GB = Great Britain, not myself Graybeard.

::smh::

Brink’s, London UK had dogs on the armoured trucks instead of guns until one of the trucks were held up and the perps blasted the dog with a shotgun then they stopped using dogs. Word from one of the air couriers was that between the robbery and some dogs taking a dump and stinking up the trucks, the dogs were dumped and not used.

desertdweller

you forgot australia, after the moronic govt bullshytted the populace into turning in their guns and the crime rate went ballistic!

NHSparky

Oh, it would change.

But not for the better.

David

How about a world where no one is allowed a weapon except for the police authorities… it’s called “prison”. Yeah, that’s safe.

In a gun-free society might makes right and very little restrains the larger and more powerful from abusing the weaker. Hence the phrase “God made Men and Samuel Colt made ’em equal.”

11B-Mailclerk

I don’t know about guns making folks “equal” but they -do- make them a whole lot more self-restrained.

And -that- should be sufficient for civilization to flourish.

NHSparky

Heinlein was right in that regard–an armed society is a polite society.

Quote:

“Across U.S. 1 in Cocoa Village, employees and patrons at the Dog and Bone British Pub were asking why this happened.

Bailey was a longtime customer at the pub, and he occasionally worked there helping with cleanup and checking IDs at the door, said manager Diana Lynn.

Why would someone they knew as sweet and happy snap?

Lynn said Bailey was let go about two weeks ago after an altercation with a patron. Another manager said Bailey thought the patron had a gun and was trying to kill him. The customer didn’t have a gun. The Dog and Bone manager was concerned Bailey was having a mental break from reality and suggested he see a doctor.

Bailey told people at the pub that he suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome, though he never went into details. He did not have a military background, Lynn said.

“He seemed kind and gentle,” she said. None of the other employees at the pub can understand what happened. “We’re all very sad.”

I found this guy from cocoa Beach.
Is it the same guy?

Reasons you will never hear about this on the mainstream media:

1) It wasn’t a scary black rifle used in the shooting.

2) The shooting was stopped by good guys with guns.

3) The shooter was a Person of Color.

Grunty McGruntface

Also, the good guys probably had “high capacity” magazines (or “clips”, as the super professional and well informed media like to say), while the bad guy probably had a single stack .45 with standard mags.

The Other Whitey

He could’ve had an XD, glock 21, or FNP. All of which are double-stack.

AnotherPat

Florida. Again.

Ok…am going to do this (please forgive me for diverting from the post/story, but just could not resist).

I read the article. While scrolling down, saw some interesting mugshots…and just had to share:

http://news.brevardtimes.com/2017/11/brevard-county-arrest-mug-shots_25.html?m=1

AnotherPat

P.S. In those mugshots:

What the heck is “Black of African American”????????

🤔

Graybeard

I’d guess a typo, typing “of” for “or”.

YMMV

Daisy Cutter

It is cut off. The entire phrase would be:

Black of African American descent.

Same as:

Pacific Islander of Polynesian descent.

Graybeard

Those are some u.g.l.y. lowlifes there.

AnotherPat

You nailed it, GB. Some of them seem to wanna say “Ph!%#k You!”

QMC

Crazy. That assault pistol seemed to stop assaulting people in the parking lot when two others started returning fire.

Crazy how these dangerous and scary things just seem to have a mind of their own. Crazy I tell ya.

Wilted Willy

My prayers go out to the two victims, and BZ to the employees who stopped the perp from stealing any more of my oxygen!

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Another Floridian. When did this happen. I do not read the Palm Beach Post or the other one which I forgot the name of. I don’t watch the local news much, so I don’t know if it was on the local news down here.

JC

I know the guy who was paralyzed. I worked with him for a couple months while he was up here in NH. His name is David something. Good guy. I still work with his cousin, who is beside herself. The man who died was David’s best friend, and saved his life by jumping on him and taking the brunt of the attack. David is recovering, paralyzed on the left side, and lower extremities. But very happy to be alive.

Keepin' It Real

If I ever go to Florida on vacation, I’m taking bottled water.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

I have a nice sized water purifirer under my kitchen sink, so I’m still banging on all 8 cylinders down here in South Fl.

Docduracoat

The water here is fine
Governor Scott just raised the limits on arsenic and other pollutants in the drinking water in order to improve the business climate
Those are indeed some ugly criminals
The first rule of gun fighting is to always have your gun with you

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

@ Docduracoat-I carry that brand spanking new Springfield XDE single stack .09MM down here in Fl. Hasn’t gotten me laid yet, but WTF.

David

.09mm? Now that is a really skinny bullet. What’s the magazine capacity, like 300?
