Also found out some jails in VA offer Tablets to inmates (families or friends have to pay the rental for it). The tablets can be used to read books, download music, find employment. Don’t know if Internet access is available on those tablets. The tablets are monitored, just as the phone calls. The prisoners are only allowed to havd them so many hours a day (they are a controlled item even though someone has to pay for the rental). Who knows…he may have access to the Internet after all.

AnotherPat, I know what you mean. I found TAH in January 2012 after surgery and not much to do. I was warmly welcomed. What I found, was a family more than anything else. Fellow veterans and civilian who believe in the sanctity of true Valor earned. In my bad times they have supported me with well wishes, prayers and some “get well dickweed!”, which I love just as much because I know it all comes from good hearts. When folks ask me about my family, I tell them my blood family is now quite small, but my family of brothers and sisters at TAH is large and reaches the world around. Good people here. Some of the smartest and most well thought out people I’ve read are here. So I will add, to my TAH family, Thank You All and God speed.

Hot air balloons are a lot of fun, because you are traveling along with the speed of the wind there isn’t a tremendous feel of movement nor do you feel the wind because you are part of the wind….
Sailing works in a similar fashion on the downwind run…because you are traveling with the wind and the sail are full there is almost no sense of movement unless you are in sight of land and you sense the movement of the vessel, otherwise only your GPS system indicates your actual speed….
I would encourage everyone to try both modes of transportation…they are ridiculously enjoyable.
I had one of those contraptions almost scare me out of a rowboat one morning. Fishing on a secluded lake (no skiers expected), water still as glass. They came in from my blind side while I was focused on my bobber. They were about 50 feet above me when they hit the burner. Those things are loud.
I enjoy watching ballooning, but am driven to participate. Sailing? Meh. I sailed in Sunfish boat, even crewed a bigger one on the Huron to Mackinac race. I prefer to turn the keys, (someone elses keys), on a pair of CATs or Detroits, V-8s to V-16s, and head out to the Gulfstream to drag bait. Anymore, if a boat doesn’t have rodholders and a tuna door, it just doesn’t excite me

I was there for that years ago. There is a sheet rock plant right next to a field they were launching from and when I was in line to pick up the rock i watched them fill and take off. Very cool

In calling the VA, it was suggest that I go to the local ER last night. I did, I walked in, the waiting room had 2 2 year olds puking, wailing, and 3 wenches whining, and the smarmy clerk told me, with pleasure, that it could take 4 hours or more to get a urine test submitted. Submitted, not evaluated. I left and called the VA this morning and handled everything there. The Pensacola Joint Ambulatory Care Clinic, goes out of their way to do the right thing for us.

This one slipped up on me. I avoid being sick, by getting plenty of fresh country air, not getting around crowds, and living nearly right. I sort of double, (or multiple), whammied myself. I didn’t eat on Wednesday, didn’t drink water,and was outdoors, and did a lot of walking around. Any of those could have caused discomfort, but all together they kicked my butt. VA found high White blood cells in my urinalysis, along with quite a bit of bacteria, constituting a UTI. I am now on an anti-biotic and trying to regain my appetite.

Stouffers makes a quite passable SOS. I find that heating it in a fry pan to boil off the excess liquid makes it even better than zapping it. If they would only put SOS on the label they would sell a lot more.

Are the damned Weather Forecasters ever going to agree on where a storm is going to hit? SO DAMNED MANY “Experts” say they can tell us what the weather and climate will be like ten to fifty years from now and they can’t even accurately predict what a hurricane will do in the next twelve hours!
Houston has not been in the equation for days. It has shifted west from its initial track for a West Florida Landfall, with the models now showing a landfall between Mobile and Biloxi.
Hurricanes are like children – they have minds of their own until they reach maturity, so you have to watch them 24/7 until they figure out what they’re doing.
Now it appears that Nate, after bouncing off Central America’s east coast, is headed up in the general direction of MS/LA. I hope it’s far enough to the west of FL to bring some rain up our way. A little overnight helps, but we need some serious rain!

I wonder how much longer it will be until some Judge decides he or she has had enough of his courtroom crap and throws him in jail for Contempt of Court?
Bernath has already been sentenced to two years. His latest appearance was to try to appeal the sentence.
When he showed up his defense instantly asked for a mental competency exam before the judge could hear any other evidence.
Ball workin’ Bernath was betting he could delay the proceedings further and stay out on bond.
The Judge may have not hit him for contempt but he had him stuffed and cuffed and thrown into the mental holding facility and had him undergo evaluation. He is going to be there until the 11th, when he will be dragged in front of the judge in his county jump suit.
At that time a court appointed shrink will present his findings and he either goes back to the nut bin or in General pop to await his hearing on his appeal of sentence.
So either way he stays locked up, fine by me and I’m sure that will bring relief to many others!

Please bear with some old Army vet’s questions about Navy subjects.(again) I watched again. an old movie from 1980, “The Final Countdown” about the USS Nimitz going back in time.
1. In the movie an aircraft was landing with a failed tailhook. They were putting up a catching barricade and one of the deck crew was using what looked like a power wrench to turn a mechanism to lift the steel arms for the catch net. Is that real? I would have thought it was a purely hydraulic system.
2. There was a Tomcat squadron with black and orange tail markings with a skull and crossbones. Is that a real squadron and if it is what is its name and is it still in existence.
3. The Captain ordered an “A6 Tanker” up to refuel 2 Tomcats. Can that tanker carry enough to really fill up two Tomcats?
4. Last question. Watching the arresting cables be drawn up after a landing I wondered something. Do arresting cables ever break or snap? Does the crew on the landing deck have a safe place in case one did?

2–It was black and white but had yellow. They were the Jolly Rogers (VF-84) out of Oceana (go figure how an East Coast squadron ends up off Pearl. But hey.) They have been inactive since the mid-90’s.
3–Short answer, yes.
4–Yes they can, and do. IIRC, they are taken out of service after 100 “traps”, regardless of wear, etc.

That happened when I was onboard a carrier. We had a Tomcat literally fly past the possible point of return due to pilot error. They rigged the barricade and launched the alert tanker. Barricade looks like a big, thick volleyball net. I honestly don’t remember the precise mechanics in rigging the barricade as I was actually at my station and watching the PLAT camera.
F-14 didn’t make it to the ship, tanker didn’t reach the plane in time, plane ditched (Deep water, lost forever) Aircrew was recovered without any major injuries. Both pilots were separated from Naval Service.

Yes, and it can be devastating. Flight deck is dangerous as hell, but organized and operated to minimize injuries/damage if something goes wrong. Ive seen deaths, dimemberments, broken limbs, aircraft go overboard etc.
Sea and anchor, mooring, UNREP, anything using cables, chains, hauser line can cause horrible injuries or damage.

Mobile to Biloxi are probably getting pretty strong winds, and the eye, (1/2 way point), will most likely, come ashore around 2000 hrs tonight. I am good to go, not expecting more than a few gusts of 30 MPH, sustained 20 MPH, coming through a dense cedar barrier. Not even “Hurricane Party” worthy.

Bet Kyle Bardwin does not ever want to make your aquaintances again. He sounds mentally unstable since he seems to repeat the same behavior over and over and over again and does not repent or learn from his mistakes. A Repeat Offender similiar to those other two Dudes in Florida or Forgin Frank. At least one of those Florida dudes is escaping the Wrath of Nathan, since he is enjoying spending Virginia’s taxpapers $$$$ being fed, housed and clothed at Chasapeake, VA. He may be another one who will never learn the errors of his ways.

I did not catch all of it, but I did see the first 30 minutes of last night’s Saturday Night Live. No references in what I saw of the current Presidential Administration, and surprise surprise, what I saw was actually amusing. Perhaps Lorne Michaels has concluded that the Bash Trump Well has run dry, or more likely, a temporary respite. Perhaps the latest sexual harassment scandal involving a loved one of the Democrat Party is making them reconsider their incessant attacks on Donald Trump regard his alleged sexual indiscretions.
Another Army vet’s Navy question. (Goodness, there are so many if I think too long.)
On one of today’s threads a phony was listed on his DD214 as a “Machinist Mate Fireman”. What is the difference between a MM and a MMF? I knew a coworker years ago who was a some Rating-Fireman. He said Firemen wore red stripes on their uniform. Is there more to it than that, like extra training? Also is their a Rate for just Fireman and if so, what do they do? Thank you Navy vets for your patience with me. I have the greatest respect for anyone serving on a prison that can sink.

When you enlist in the Navy there’s different general fields of specialties. So depending on what field you are “striking” for would decide what color your stripes are. This all goes away at E-4 when you get your “crow”. Try this website, it might help you understand.

I know, confusing. But on the other hand, big Army confuses the crap out of me with all the numbers/letters thing, sometimes you wear this beret, sometimes that one, ropes etc. 🙂
