Update on “Missing” Shiloh Sailor
The Navy Times is reporting Petty Officer 3rd Class Peter Mims, who gained notoriety by hiding in USS Shiloh’s engineering spaces while presumed overboard, has been transferred to the brig at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego. He’s cooling his heels in pretrial confinement, awaiting a possible Court Martial.
He was reported missing and presumed overboard 8 June, and was discovered by shipmates a week later, after a massive 50 hour search was conducted by US Navy and JMSDF ships and aircraft.
Pacific Fleet spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Matt Knight said in an email:
“We do not know all the details and motivations behind this Sailor’s week-long disappearance,” Knight said. “This matter remains under investigation, but early indications are that he had taken steps to avoid being found by other Sailors, who were actively attempting to locate him.”
The investigation is ongoing and expected to conclude by late summer, he said. Investigators are interviewing sailors and reviewing records to construct an account of what happened.
He needs a psych eval and a fair trial. And employment elsewhere.
No good cookie in his future. I read elsewhere (?) that another Sailor on the ship said he got a Dear John or whatever and was despondent. What the hell did he hope to gain by hiding? Was he planning to go ashore at the next port call? I don’t get it. There is no girl alive who is worth the problems this guy is going to have for the rest of his life b/c of this escapade.

How exactly does one disappear into the depths of a ship, and remain hidden for a week, without one of the following?
Prior planning and a large stash of food and water.
Logistical help from a buddy or buddies.
Or both.
Surely someone must have heard him crying.
Or whatever.
It takes a lot of effort for a Commander and JAG to get a service member into pre-trial confinement these days.
This sailor must be a piece of work.
If the guy hides out for a week aboard ship, there’s a good chance he”l try to run away if given the opportunity. His commander must have concluded that no form of restraint short of PTC was likely to keep him around long enough to face the music.

The ship went to Singapore after this asshat was found. Could have drowned all those “Dear Pete” sorrows at the four floors in Orchard Towers. For those who know CG-47 class, there is a cofferdam near the MRG in both main spaces. It’s dry near the top and you can crawl in there and nobody can see you unless they crawl down there and look inside. Intel says that was where he was hiding. Kid knew his spaces.

Way back in day, when Hack Stone was younger, skinnier and faster, and the yen rate was a lot more favorable to American GI’s, we had a tanker at 1st Tracks who was not career progressing along with his peers because he went UA when he was at Camp Pendleton. His reason for going UA was that his wife was cheating on him. So his taking a few months, then getting reduced in rank, fined and placed on restriction is just what it would take for his wife to realize that she made a mistake.
About 8 years later, I was on a CAX out in 29 Stumps with a maintenance detachment. We had a LCpl assigned to the detachment. About two years later, I see him in Pohang sporting PFC insignia. Same deal; wife cheats on him, so he goes UA. I don’t see the logic here. Can someone explain it to me?
Only thing I can come up with is that he went UA to either try to straighten out his wife/her lover or try to win her back.
As we see have all seen time after time throughout life and military careers is that pussy makes some men lose their fucking minds. My best example was when I was a lefttentant and platoon leader back in the day at Ft. Carson. Joe’s wife, who is a very hot looking former stripper convinces him to go around town and take cash advances at every cash advance place in town, then buy a new truck with zero down and then buy a bunch of electronics and some furniture on credit. They then load everything up in the truck and head for California where she is from, free to start a new life away from all those Army troubles. We don’t hear from Joe for a while. So he gets reported AWOL. When they get to her hometown she convinces Joe to rent a house and pay the rent up a year in advance with all his borrowed money. As soon as they are moved in she calls her boyfriend over. Jody and Joe have it out in the yard. Treacherous slut calls the local popo boys while they are fighting out in the yard. When they show up she tells them that he has been abusing her and is AWOL. Joe gets rolled up and sent back to us. Joe gets shuffled to a barracks room. The next morning we don’t hear from Joe. Joe of course had gone back to California. How he got there in three days in the winter with no money is still a mystery. Joe breaks in to the house where his old lady and Jody are bedded down. This results in another fight, more charges for Joe and another free trip back to Ft. Carson. Joe is put under watch at the CQ desk and his BDU top and boots are taken away. He sits there all day. Miramar? I’ve done prisoner escort and pick up from Miramar. Calling it a prison is a joke. Well, mil prisons are a joke compared to civ prisons, but Miramar is prob the cushiest brig in the mil system. I’ve been in there and seen inmates and guards calling each other by their first names.
If he did do this over a woman, at least he’s got a chance of a rebound hook up with the female guards there. Miramar hasn’t had one get caught with a inmate in a couple years, they’re due for another one getting knocked up.
