Amor Ftouhi and the gun show loophole

| June 24, 2017

Word on the street is that Amor Ftouhi, the Flint, Michigan terrorist who stabbed a police officer in the neck the other day, told investigators that he tried to buy a gun at a flea market but he was prevented from the purchase because he failed the background check. From CBS News;

The man suspected of stabbing an officer at a Michigan airport Wednesday unsuccessfully tried to buy a gun in the U.S. before the attack, but he did buy a knife here, the FBI said on Thursday.

David Gelios, head of the FBI in Detroit, made the disclosure at a news conference. He did not elaborate.

From Fox2;

The FBI said that Ftouhi entered the country legally last week through Lake Champlain in Upstate New York. The Quebec resident then made his way to Michigan, where FOX 2 learned he visited the Gibraltar Trade Center and tried unsuccessfully to buy a gun.

The Gibralter Trade Center is a massive indoor marketplace where guns and knives are among the many items for sale by vendors who rent space. The last show was this weekend and it’s not clear whether Ftouhi visited the trade center on Saturday or Sunday.

He reportedly told the FBI that after his attempt to buy a gun failed he bought the knife he used to stab Lt. Jeff Neville at Bishop International Airport in Flint on Wednesday morning.

My guess is that he believed the hype that it’s so easy to buy guns here, that he thought he couldn’t fail. He discovered that the gun show loophole is just a myth.

Someone want to tell Chuck Schumer and the Washington Post?

I bought a pistol the other day at a store and could not believe how long it took and all the paperwork….AND….I have a current NC carry permit

AW1Ed

In the DPRofMD handguns are regulated, meaning you can purchase one, then pick it up after a seven day cooling off period and if you pass the State Police background check.

This is intended to prevent one from purchasing, say, a $600 handgun and then on a whim knocking over the neighborhood Shop-N-Go for $50 on the way home.

Or something.

Silentium Est Aureum

CA is 10 days. For EVERYONE, including cops, unless you’re a badged LEO with a letter from your Chief stating that immediate transfer is necessary for their job.

The Old Maj

Or a $90 handgun and knocking over the bank on the way home for $5K. Cuz a $90 handgun will kill just as good as a $600 handgun, and while you always want the tools of your trade to be top notch, cocaine doesn’t grow on trees you know.

Silentium Est Aureum

Heroin/dental seems to be the drugs of choice around here.

Too bad narcan is so readily available.

Silentium Est Aureum

Fentanyl.

Fucking autocorrect.

Since when do hoodrats go through background checks and waiting periods to purchase a firearm, TOM?
I’ll take “Never” for a thousand, Alex.

Fyrfighter

Go for two thousand AW1Ed, that’s a daily double!

I got temporarily dq’ed at a gun show in Columbus GA while on active duty with a CT permit (which GA doesn’t recognize tho) and I had a copy of my orders/CAC card. The evil rifle in question was a Mosin…
The upside was it gave me an opportunity to check out Stone Mountain to pick it up. Probably spent more on gas and the meal up there than the rifle was worth, but those memories were worth it.

Mason

Beautiful place! I also have some good memories of hiking up that gigantic chunk of granite when I was there on one of my TDYs. Been so long now that I hardly remember it was 90 plus degrees and so humid we were essentially swimming up hill.

Roh-Dog

The state is great, from Cloudland Canyon to Savannah, Toccoa to Lake Seminole. I’m not sure but it might be paradise*.

Sj

PS. This was in NC and my permit is from the same NC county.

IDC SARC

how long did it take? I am in NC, have a CCW and the last pistol I purchased I walked in filled out the FFL and walked out with it.

Without the CCW I would have had to fill out a permit form and taken it to the sheriff for endorsement before going back to the store to get the pistol. Having a CCW saves you considerable time and effort when buying a pistol….for a rifle of shotgun it only saves a matter of minutes really.

I got it same visit. My point was all the paperwork and how long it took…about an hour. I know that is nothing compared to other states but it illustrates that one doesn’t just waltz in and out.

IDC SARC

An hour to fill out two pages on a Form 4473…where was that, Short Bus Firearms? 🙂

11b-mailclerk

Newbie clerk? They can add fun and drama to the process.

Jay

Not to mention if you are stationed on base, having to go get a letter signed by your CO and a current background check from PMO….even if you live in town. I jetted out the back gate and picked up a Glock during lunch one day. Still had time to have lunch at Denny”s too.

Fyrfighter

Man, that’s just crazy to have to get anyones permission / signature to buy a firearm.. While the dims in charge here rammed some stupid laws through after Sandy Hook, including a magazine capacity limit, and requiring a background check for private sales, all you need to do here is fill out the 4473, and go through an insta check (which will cost you $6 because the idiots in this state years ago decided that the national check wasn’t good enough, you need a Colorado one as well.. That being said, the time it takes is directly related to how many people work at CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation)for the checks, and the volume of checks being done at that moment.. ( don’t go to your local gun store when there’s a big gun show in Denver, then it will take a couple hours… black friday sucks too..)

rgr769

In Commifornia the paperwork takes about half an hour, but only if you already have your “Firearm safety Certificate.” But if it is a pistol you will also have to have a separate pistol certificate. Each of them requires passing a test and a fee of $25.00. Also, they expire every five years to you have to do it all over again each five years. Once you do all the paperwork and you pass both the state and federal background check you must wait ten days to pick up your gun. Every year, the legislature and governor enact new laws to make firearm ownership more onerous, but only for the law abiding, of course. There are about a half a dozen other requirements and hoops but I won’t “LC” you all with the details.

Fyrfighter

Hmm.. sounds like more and more, we should give all the people in California who still retain the capacity for rational thought the chance to evacuate, then do like in the James Bond movie, and blow the San Andreas Fault.. let the rest of the state fall into the sea… just saying..

Roh-Dog

The Pistol and Rifle club on Benning had this rule, I guess to be authorized to sell. Considering the markup was next-to-nothing above dealer price, I would’ve done the great gathering of holy signatures while on fire.
A side note: I bought a shotgun off of a buddy while I was there. We went to the Post Legal Office to get a Bill of Sale noterized, just to make sure we were both covered. Weird looks were had.

Jay

My Florida permit was easy. Set an appointment, show them my ID, fill out the app, take prints and a picture and out the door in about 10 minutes. I figure with a NC AND a Florida CCW i’ll be covered anywhere I go.

Roh-Dog

But to get a FL permit you’d actually have to step foot in FL, right? I’m not ok with this, but it’s still better than being in ‘Bama.

Jay

If youre a Florida resident you can mail it in. Pretty sure you can get a non-resident permit too, but I’d have to look into it.

Silentium Est Aureum

Where I’m at, it takes longer to fill out the paperwork than it does to get it approved, and I don’t have to show my CCW permit, either.

jonp

Odd…I have a NC CC and the last gun I bought at a store took about 15 min

GOSH GOLLY GEE WHIZ WALLY, what’s next, Knife and Machete Control Laws?

*points at England*

Careful what you scoff at, API. The Brits have done exactly this, with completely predictable results.

11B-Mailclerk

Banning cutlery did not work out too well for Scotland. 8 – )

Now all of Britain is trying it out…..

rgr769

Well, if the Brits have “assault” knife control laws, how come all these people have been knifed by ‘Slamos over the past four years? I heard they were even talking about banning kitchen knives with sharp points.

A Proud Infidel®™

They might as well pass legislation controlling the sale and transfer of screwdrivers, ice picks, chisels and tire irons while they’re at it!

Liberal Politicians can ALWAYS be counted on to be IDIOTS and imbeciles.

Silentium Est Aureum

Don’t laugh. Google, “New York gravity knife.” The Assembly there is about to outlaw any folding knife that can be opened with one hand.

Waiting for CAIR to retain the ACLU to file a lawsuit against AG Sessions for being a meanie.

Every time I buy a gun at a gun show it takes LONGER than at a gun shop. The Lines are long and cell service to get a check done is a pain. I have bought a number of guns at gun show and it is the same paper work and checks as at a gun shop. This hopefully will put another spike in that vampires heart.

My daughter wants her toys back. She’s in preschool and she thinks CUNTzman is a worthless flaming pussy. She can also identify the major components of an M1 Carbine and told me this week that she wants a pink one. Anything for my baby girl!

Fyrfighter

Good on ya TOW!

jonp

Just bought our 5yr old her first gun and got her a lifetime NRA. A bubblegum pink Chipmunk. It’s never too early to teach gun safety.

jonp

5yr old granddaughter

The Other Whitey

I’ve bought guns at gun shows. Every single one required a photo ID, 4473, and 10-day wait (California), just like any of the weapons I’ve purchased from a gun shop. So I’m still wondering where this loophole is supposed to be.

The Old Maj

I’ve bought guns at gun shows without a background check. Sold them to. Never lived in California.

AW1Ed

Private sale? Otherwise you could be setting yourself up for a very bad legal experience.

The Old Maj

Sure, depending upon the state you live and the policy of the gun show anyone can make a private party sale at a gun show without a background check. In some cases dealers can even sell their “private collection” without a background check.

You might think that private sales are only a small part of the market. Most estimates have them at 40% of annual sales.

11B-Mailclerk

With some effort, and resolute determination, we can keep that “private sales percentage” number uselessly vague permanently.

OWB

And are any of those legitimate sales or mostly dark alley criminal sales of stolen or otherwise illegal firearms?

Or are you seriously suggesting that all those sales are at gun shows between individuals who would otherwise be able to purchase firearms legally? That doesn’t even make sense. It sounds like you are saying that 40% of annual gun sales occur under the table or in the parking lot at gun shows. Not believing it.

IDC SARC

Considering no one is keeping stats on their illegal sales/purchases and centrally reporting them the claim is an estimate. Estimates are just that, estimates. Estimates are known for unreliability and are particularly vulnerable to agenda and other biases.

The Old Maj

OMFG, This is what a reply to a comment looks like. I can’t help it if you don’t understand what a reply looks like. Does my other comment look like that?

No. ?

You wanna know why? Because I wasn’t fucking talking to you.

You can thank me later.

IDC SARC

k bitch

The Old Maj

You would really have to contort what I wrote to get that out of it.

Private sales are popular. People who can’t buy guns legally sometimes buy them in private party sales. Criminals are not big on buying things for the most part. They would rather steal them if they can. But they certainly do buy them in private party sales.

The implication throughout the comments here is that; “you can’t buy a gun at a gun show without a background check”. Someone even posted a video showing the utter futility of even trying it. Nothing could be further from the truth. It can be easily done if you live in a state where private party, sales w/o BGC are allowed, like Indiana

Let’s not put the blinders on and pretend like things are not what they are. Try not to make up ridiculous shady innuendo about what I write. Most of the people I know who do stuff like that have a (D) near their name.

IDC SARC

pffft…quit being a bitch

The Old Maj

Wow, genius impressive. It’s almost like you tried to man up but didn’t have it in you.

IDC SARC

You make a bitch comment seeping with estrogen after I said nothing…absolutely nothing to insult you personally and then want to talk about manhood. Yeah ok…if it makes ya feel better.

The Old Maj

what made you think I was talking to you fucktard?

IDC SARC

you replying to my comment mostly

IDC SARC

like I’m doing to yours.

Bill R.

He had to have done some research before his visit to Gibraltar Trade Center because they do not have gun and knife shows every weekend. They have different shows every weekend and gun and knife shows are maybe one weekend a month. I generally don’t go there any more because I’ve found better deals elsewhere.

Ex-PH2

What is missed in all of this was Ftouhi’s reason for trying to get a gun in the first place, and failing that, acquiring a knife.

That is passed over as if it has no importance at all, when in fact, it is more important than the fact that he could not get his hands on a gun.

It appears that the brutality behind the desire is something, some reality that the weak-minded twits on the left side of the political fence, including that imbecile gershman, are unwilling to face.

Everything is fine. Everything is just fine. Just maintain an even strain. Nothing is wrong. Everything is just fine….

Yeah, keep saying that, and when you say “I’m angry”, make sure you say it with a smile and nod when you do so.

Dave Hardin

I bought a NAVY Seal 2000 Tactical Flashlight for only the cost of $4.95

Package says it will disable people hundreds of yards away.

Warning, it doesn’t seem to work on Soviets. Pointed it at my Soviet whom I use for testing these kind of things.

She hit me with a lamp and told me to go phuk myself. She doesn’t appear disabled in any way but the lamp needs some work.

jonp

Your problem is that you bought an old model. The NAVY Seal 2017 Tactical Flashlight is now on it’s 12 generation. Soviets are not as much of a problem now so they redesigned it into a Muslim exploding piece of ordinance.

Hondo

Bingo. The Soviet Union ceased to exist roughly 26 years ago. There are no Soviets anymore – so anything that is effective against Soviets won’t work today.

Well, outside of the People’s Republic of Berkeley. There . . . maybe.
