Roy Lee Ross, Jr. sentenced
We wrote about Roy Lee Ross, Junior, aka Daniel Alfred Sullivan Jr., last August when he was arrested for defrauding the Veterans’ Affairs Department of more than $143,000. In 2007, the VA diagnosed his Daniel Alfred Sullivan Jr. persona with PTSD for his Vietnam wartime service and he got a butt-load of money for it. Turns out that he had never served in Vietnam. Ross enlisted in 1973 and was stationed in Germany. The closest he got to Vietnam was Hawaii in 1978 right before he deserted and got his Other Than Honorable discharge.
He pleaded guilty in February, and he was sentenced last month to one year and one day in prison, two years of supervised release, $143,000 of restitution in $25 monthly installments. He’s 64 years old, so it’s doubtful he’ll live long enough to pay the VA back – at that rate he’d have to live another 477 years.

As a practical solution, it’s not much. But, at least there is a symbolic negative consequence requiring monetary pay back for his crimes. Makes one wonder if there are no assets remaining from all that money he got.
Oh, and the jail time is a nice touch.

It’s incredibly easy for someone who believes they’ve achieved “lifetime gravy train” status to live like there’s no tomorrow – and blow through a ton of money. I understand that’s often seen in big lottery winners, too.

How does this happen? How can someone file a claim with the VA, asserting that they served in the RVN, and no one at the VA does even a cursory review of his records to verify his story?
I worked for a US Congressman as his Veteran’s Affairs Rep. I handled over 2k cases and many from VN vets who needs assistance.
As a VN vet myself, just a after a few minutes of GI banter, I could tell if the claimant was legitimate or not.
Yes, sad to say that I dealt with vets who claimed to have served in the RVN, but didn’t.
Just a few minutes of barracks chatting is all it took.
Good grief. This my friends is one reason there is such a backlog of claims. The VA is required (and for good reason) to investigate each claim to ensure that the veteran is compensated properly.
Chasing the false claims takes away from the time needed to work on real claims.
It appears as if some of these VA employees need to get their heads out of their duffle bag.
Or are they just too lazy to do their jobs correctly. After all, they think it’s not their money. But it is dummy.

they don’t require a DD-214. if they did and matched it to DOD files when you applied for benefits, we would not have this trouble.

Yesterday, another fellow appeared in a Federal court for sentencing after pleading guilty to theft. It was in LA and the victim was an entertainer, not the American taxpayer. Prosecutors asked for a prison term of five years. The judge said no. she’s not going along with that. She have the guy seven years in the Big House and ordered restitution. Funny how this works (or doesn’t) isn’t it?

It will probably be deducted from his Social Security check until the day he dies, and no, I don’t feel sorry for him if he starts whining about it. He can just sit in jail and rot.

If I’m not mistaken most pensions, at least Federal ones, are garnished upon incarceration to pay for the prisoner’s upkeep.
Not sure what type of pension this ass clown would be entitled to.
He may be getting a bit from SSDI, SSI or SS. I highly doubt if it’s anything substantial.
A more fitting sentence would have been for him to serve Federal time (which suspends Social Security benefits), until such time that his debt to the government would have been paid, in kind.

At 64, he has a life expectancy of maybe 25 years, and he is repaying $300 a year. So out of $143,000 he is pocketing $135,500 free and clear. Who says crime doesn’t pay?
He’s already outlived the average Black male. Last I looked their life expectancy is 63 years.
I’m sure that there are some people who owe the IRS six figures and would love to get on the $25/month payment plan.
