McHugh revives drafting women discussion
The Washington Examiner reports that Army Secretary John McHugh mentioned the issue of registering women for selective service hen he spoke to the Association of the US Army convention the other day.
“If your objective is true and pure equality, then you have to look at all aspects and at some point Selective Service will have to be one of those things considered very carefully,” McHugh said on the first day of the Association of the United States Army’s annual meeting in Washington.
The Supreme Court last visited the issue in Rostker v. Goldberg (1981). In a 6-3 decision, Justice Rehnquist wrote the majority opinion;
Since women are excluded from combat, Congress concluded that they would not be needed in the event of a draft, and therefore decided not to register them…Men and women, because of the combat restrictions on women, are simply not similarly situated for purposes of a draft or registration for a draft.
So, with the Defense Department contemplating removal of the barriers keeping women from serving in combat specialties, they also remove any barrier to registering draft-aged women for selective service as well. I mean, if we’re all still concerned about equality here. With the good, comes the bad. Suck it up, cupcake.

I can only imagine what this is going to do to the medical manuals used to screen applicants at MEPS.
“too many are being excluded for this condition…..change it to waiverable, and here’s the new policy for waivers.”
Are you referencing DoDI 6130.03 and USMEPCOM Regulation 40-1? I’m not sure where you’re going, but waivers are granted by the services, NOT by the MEPS Chief Medical Officer. It’s a common misconception.
Combat schmombat. The overwhelming number of males in service never engage in combat. Draft women, starting with the Scrotum Shaver’s kids and Harry Reid’s great-great-great-great grand children. No deferments for pregnancies or babies at home. You want equality? You get it. It would be the crowning jewel on Obama’s Ruin America Crown.
Word.
Pregnancy before a deployment also becomes a UCMJ offense.
The “Gender Benders” are going to love this.
They are not going to be able to have the cake and eat it too and the good of the many will not be able to outweigh the good of the one.
It’s about damned time.
Works for me. The combat arms exclusion was the reason the draft was allowed to remain male only when challenged in court. No combat arms exclusion logically implies that both genders should be eligible for the draft.
And if males don’t get an automatic exemption due to having children in-being or on the way, well, . . . .
I wonder if the same exception would be extended to single fathers raising their children?
They are out there.
‘If your objective is true and pure equality’ — Oh, I like this! I like it a lot! The consequence of howling from the SJWs is THIS LITTLE BIT OF REALITY.
McHugh has made my day. I will sacrifice a goat cheese and some crusty bread to Athena Parthenon. We’ll have a good giggle about it.
I cannot wait for the screaming and howling to start.
Thank you, Ex PH2, for putting it so succinctly.
And may I add, The Immutable Law of Unintended Consequences WILL be coming around to bite these SJWs in the ass. My ears will be tuned and quivering waiting for the screams and howls.
What was that Conan the Barbarian quote about hearing the lamentations of your enemies. . . . ?
Since you asked . . . (smile)
Yes, I am waiting for the day when I walk into the restaurant on the highway and find some female SJWs ranting about it over chai tea.
Canada is thinking….Aw dammit not again, and fat American chicks to boot.
Obviously you haven’t seen the “conscientious objector” who deserted and skipped to Canada during Bush’s war.
Not exactly a stunning example of Hot Babes of the U.S.
What’s fair for the goose…
Let’s not forget that immigrants and dual-nationals are also required to be registered. It’s supposed to be a requirement for federal and most state financial aid (and other items), but you know damn good and well it isn’t checked before handing out tax dollars to those folks.
I remember getting a notice in the mail back in 1983 that I was about to get in trouble because I hadn’t registered yet. I had been in the Army since 1980 at that time….
Selective Service definitely uses interesting ways to track down those who should register. Here’s a funny story: http://www.snopes.com/military/icecream.asp
NBC, I got the same letter about a year AFTER I had been discharged after four years in the ARMY! I sent them a copy of my Discharge and a copy of my Draft card. Funny, I never heard from them again.
I received a nasty gram from Selective Service as well half way through basic. Never responded, what were they going to do?
I like how he is getting all assertive on his way out – bravely spoken.
Never going to happen. Our government is too invested in perks for women for votes and feel good gender discrimination.
Let the Republican congress pass the law and the Occupant veto it. I would ask every democrat who voted against it, “Why did you vote against this law, don’t you support equality under the law?” I would ask the Occupant why he vetoed it.
Stand for stupid causes, deliver stupid excuses.
