2d ACR on parade near Russian border

| February 25, 2015

Estonia

The Washington Post reports that troopers of the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment paraded through the streets of Narva, Estonia just a few hundred meters from the Russian border on the occasion of Estonia’s Independence Day;

Russia has long complained bitterly about NATO expansion, saying that the Cold War defense alliance was a major security threat as it drew closer to Russia’s borders. The anger grew especially passionate after the Baltic states joined in 2004, and Russian President Vladimir Putin cited fears that Ukraine would join NATO when he annexed the Crimean Peninsula in March last year.

The Post also reports that US tanks participated in Latvia’s Independence Day celebrations a few months ago. I think it’s odd that many of the so-called liberal Left in this country call us occupiers and an imperial power, but these countries welcome our troops and include them in their celebrations of self-determination.

Given their close proximity to armed cranky Russians, were they allowed to bring ammo with them to Estonia?

Ex-PH2

There is definitely something about those big ol’ gashog vehicles. It looks like you really mean business when you show up in that.

Can I get one in pink camo?

As armored vehicles go, Strykers are the Prius of the Armor world. Respectively tiny fuel tanks, and still has a 300 – 400 mile range. They sip fuel compared to their older tracked cousins.

B Woodman

Interesting. My, look how far they’ve traveled. I was stationed with a 2ACR support unit in Neurnberg back-in-the-day, when the three troops were stationed just west of the German divide at Amberg, Bamberg & Binloch.

Goes to show some countries, unlike the citizens of our own, appreciate the U.S. Military, its power and what that power means. They like us and know what we provide. I wish we could have some of these people, formerly under the iron fist of Communism, speak at universities and city halls across America and especially, to the Congress and the DNC.

Ex, only Muddy Pink(pink with black spots) camo OpSpec must be observed. Joe

A small part of me likes this. But my better judgement says that this was a seriously BAD idea.

Having the 2nd ACR parade in Tallinn (Estonia’s capital) would have “shown the flag” equally well. However, having them parade a few hundred meters from the Russian border will be seen by the Bear as nothing less than a poke with a sharp stick.

The only problem is, the Bear still knows how to play for keeps – and is willing to do so if and when it suits their purpose. I don’t think our current Administration ever knew how, nor does it have the will.

Green Thumb

If you are going to “rattle sabers”, then, at the very least, you need to have been in the military.

Obummer is poking the Bear…..

This is Obama we’re talking about.

My guess is that if push came to shove, that brigade would be ordered to do a Dutch in Balkans maneuver.

By that I mean, surrender and have their vehicles, with themselves chained to them, to serve as human shields at whatever areas the Sovs…erm.. I mean, Russians didn’t want bombed.

PFM

Are they still out of Vilseck?

To Huxton

Ah, the memories Vilsec, Weiden, Graf, Hohenfels, border patrols, Weidhaus greeting fleeing film crews as the Russians rolled in. S.P. artillery company in an armor Battalion.

Yes, 2CR still out in Vilseck they came back over in 2006.

Pathetic bark, neutered, sex change, and no teeth.

The Barack Hussein Obama way!

I would not want to be them with this President.

They dropped the “Armored” when they switched to Strykers and they dropped the “Stryker” last year when they kicked all of the Cav Scouts out of the 2nd and 3rd. Its just the 2nd Cavalry Regiment now.

4/2 ACR, S Troop, 88-91. At a border camp the night the wall came down. Interesting times to say the least, then and now.

CLAW131

My Army son did his Germany tour (88-90) with the 2nd ACR.

He was the parts clerk in the motor pool. Was doing good until he broke his right arm in two places trying to push a deadlined deuce and a half into the bay to be worked on.

Had to learn how to write and do his job then with his left hand, soldiered on, returned to CONUS, then went over to DS/DS and completed his four year enlistment. Took his Army College Fund money, went to EPCC in Colorado Springs and got his Business BA, got a job with the Post Office and now has 22 plus in with them. Works the loading docks at the General Mail Facility in Denver driving a tote motor cart back and forth all shift.

I’m proud of my son. He was a good soldier then and is continuing to be a good USPS employee today.
