Lt.-Col. Deborah Miller; stolen valor in Canada
Back in July, we wrote a bit about Lieutenant Colonel Deborah Miller of the Canadian Army who was being investigated for her wearing of medals and honors that she didn’t earn. Hondo sends a link from The Whig which reports that she was convicted yesterday;
She pleaded guilty to three counts of conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline for wearing unauthorized medals on her military uniform. She was given a severe reprimand and a $5,000 fine.
[…]
The judge…was also concerned that Miller wore the unauthorized medals at military events only two months after being convicted at her other court martial, at which she was found guilty of making false statements.
The Whig is calling it a “severe reprimand”, but I’d argue that it’s can’t be severe enough. A field grade officer should know better especially after her court martial a few months before for similar charges. But, hey, it’s Canada.
Category: Phony soldiers
Are they really that hard up for officers in Canada that they keep an officer around that has been court martialed and now for the second time? She should have been jettisoned after the first one.
How in Heaven’s name can this phony NOT have been cashiered by now!!??
Ah, well. It’s not like we are doing much better.
I didn’t know Paul McCartney was a Canadian!
You’re mistaken. Paul McCartney is much prettier than that.
Holy carp… that’s a female? She’s more butch than some of my Drills!
So from Canada we are blessed with, Justin Bieber, Celine Dion and now Lieutenant Colonel Deborah Miller. Canada, the gifts that keep on giving.
The Canadian government has apologized for Bryan Adams on several occasions.
While I did send Jonn the link, I have to give a “hat tip” to commenter mikeninercharlie for providing the link in this comment to the original story yesterday.
The “Great While North” ain’t exactly looking so great today after this blatant miscarriage of justice.
Just wearing them as a tribute to those who actually earned them…
Google is your ally in this fight.

It appears on this short blurb that the Canadian Military could have hemmed her up for not only the “good order and prejudice” (equivalent to our Art 134 and Conduct unbecoming charges) but tried to get her for wearing unauthorized awards. Yet, the government could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt based on the previous case (where she falsified her records) that they were unauthorized awards.
Talking to a canuck military friend of mine. The American translation of what happened is that she got shot with a fine and basically a letter of reprimand that is permanent in her record. So she career is done and they will probably put in the department of double redundancy till hee retirement papers clear.
Charles: you might want to look at the article Jonn linked – it’s quite a bit more detailed. A short quote:
“On Monday, Miller, 57, pleaded guilty to three counts of conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline for wearing military medals and ribbons on her uniform she was not authorized to wear.”
The “lady” pleaded guilty, so that rather invalidates the claim that the prosecution had no case. The article goes on to say that the judge had considerable heartburn with the recommended sentence, thinking it too light, but in the end decided to accept the joint prosecution/defense recommendation of a fine and reprimand.
The individual was cut a break, bigtime. And IMO it’s not a break she deserved as a repeat offender.
You might be right. It’s still early morning where I am and working off an all night bender of paperwork and school stuff so my brain is just engaged in the barest minimum of work right now.
“Gibson [the judge-charles] also remarked how Miller has the support of her current superiors, but as a senior officer, should be held to a higher standard.”
Something is stinky if seniors are covering for such an stupid mistake. Which makes me wonder what she knows and what is the purpose of this cover for stupid here.
Mistake? Being courts martialed twice in 24 months is hardly what one would call a mistake. It shows a pattern of deliberate misconduct.
Hello, I worked with LCol Miller on several occasions and for several years and the reason she has the support of her superiors is because the woman does the job of three people. She puts in super long days and her performance is amazing. I can’t figure out, knowing her very well, why she did these things. I am totally at a loss and shocked. Truly she has been an extremely hard working and competent officer. It seems her ethics are bent though. I am certain her career now is over. What a sad way to end a 34 year career. What I can’t understand is why she got away with wearing the medals and commendations for so long (almost 20 years) but it is only now that it was noticed. I know what she did was very wrong and against military law and ethos, but someone was digging dirt on her. I know this looks very bad, and it is, but please remember the military took action and I am almost positive administrative action is ongoing to release her. The Canadian Armed Forces doesn’t condone this. But I do wish her good luck.

One more with more amplifier (and more cow bell?)
It seems her JAG plead out the unauthorized uniforms charges for the lesser charges of conduct unbecoming in the previous court martial. So that meant they couldn’t be used here. Add in that even the judge is no happy with these lesser charges, but that is the legal system up there.
A few people have commented on why a field grade officer with two court martial convictions is still in uniform and not out on her ass. Simple, really. Given today’s political and social climate, do you want to be one of the leaders that throw this fella out? Dykes on Bikes would rip you a new a**hole right quick!!!
In the Canadian military they do not use the term field grade. There are only 3 grades of officers which are Junior officers,Senior officers, and General officers.

If they claim t have won the Victoria Cross or the Star of Military Valour and they don’t appear in the list they are talking out their ass
Amazingly, she’ll receive the same letters and certificates that those with honourable service receive upon retirement… Makes me want to rip every scrap of paper and every plaque off the wall in my man cave and have a great fuckin’ fire in my back yard! While Canadians have been fighting and dying in third world shit holes over the past dozen years, this lying sack of shit has been rocking illegal medals and basking in the reflected glory of the guys and gals doing the heavy lifting… Fuck her and everyone like her!
Well said.
“Fuck her and everyone like her!”
I presume you meant that figuratively. 😉
That goes without saying. I’ll wager that you’d chew your arm off rather than risk waking her if you woke up after a drunken night with your arms around that thing. Then again, if looks alone are any indication, I doubt she sleeps with men.
Mikey, don’t ever change. Well said brother.
#Female privilege.
That’s not fair. No honorable woman would act this way, ever. It has nothing to do with “privilege” and everything to do with shitbaggery.
She was caught wearing unearned awards at a military event shortly after having been court martialed for the same thing, and she gets a sternly worded letter and a fine? With the current crop of political ass kissers in the Pentagon, I can see the same thing happening in the US military.
No, her first court martial was for falsifying her physical fitness test. Not wearing falsely obtained medals. I know, very sad.
“But, hey, it’s Canada.”
You really meant to say “But it’s Canada, eh!”
At least Canada is trying.
Obummer and SCOTUS are not.
sorry Scunt
The author has stated that the LCol is in the Canadian Army, please note that she is in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
