Remington lays off 100 folks in Ilion
From Pat comes the news that Remington Arms in Ilion, New York has laid off over a 100 employees as they move a chunk of their production to Alabama according to the Utica Observer-Dispatch as a direct result of New York’s gun control legislation known as the SAFE Act.
“Today’s reduction in force is a result of this strategic business decision and a softening market,” Teddy Novin, Remington Outdoor Company’s director of public affairs, wrote in an email, echoing his May sentiments.
“The latest announcement from Remington Arms, although not unexpected, is still deeply disappointing for our community,” state Assemblyman Marc Butler, R-Newport, said in a statement. “This is more than 100 of our friends, neighbors and relatives whose families now face an uncertain future.”
Colleen Pardi, co-owner of The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy on Central Avenue in Ilion said the layoffs will place more stress on an already depressed economy.
“With the new gun regulations — we all thought they would have an impact on Remington even if (Gov. Andrew Cuomo) said they wouldn’t,” Pardi said. “I wonder how the governor feels now.”
Yeah, well, the legacy governor doesn’t give a tiny rat’s ass. He proved that when Remington invited him to tour the factory and to reassure employees after Cuomo rammed through his ill-considered gun control legislation. Of course, Cuomo couldn’t make the drive.
Jobs are few and far between across Upstate New York, but that’s not where Cuomo gets his votes, so he doesn’t care. As one of the commenters on the above-linked article on Facebook says ‘An upstate vote for Cuomo is like a chicken voting for Col Sanders.’

While it’s sad to see good, hard-working people laid off this is a direct result of idiocy in action by the State of New York’s elected leaders.
On the flip side of that coin, the good, hard-working people of Huntsville, Alabama, would probably like to extend a huge and hearty “thank you” to those New York elected leaders.
If I was a freshly-unemployed Yankee, a southerly migration would be looking awfully attractive to me right about now.
Many already have migrated. The town I’m from in upstate NY is a shell of it’s former self due to oppressive regulation and high taxes driving businesses and employees elsewhere. It’s a little sad to see one’s hometown crumble into a mini-Detroit.
“If I was a freshly-unemployed Yankee, a southerly migration would be looking awfully attractive to me right about now.” –
Many do, I’ve got many neighbors from both the East and West coast follow jobs into the South (Tx). Unfortunately, many seem to have learned nothing from their mistakes so they are still clinging to their failed policies and ideals, and try their best to turn their new home into the failed political/economic environment from whence they came….
I am seriously dreading Toyota’s move into a neighboring town. A massive influx of 2,900 Californians will be transplanted, and if they cling to CA’s failed ideals (unions, voting liberal/Democrat in all elections) – God help us…
Maybe, maybe not, LA, San Foo-foo, and Sacramento are what keeps CA voting blue in elections. Once you’re out of those places, it’s pretty red.
you are so full of shit, those folks moving are trying the same thing here in texas,go god dang blue, just look at austin,,
That may be true. Look what’s happened to Colorado. The leftists migrated away from the mess they made of California and simply imported the same failed politics to their new home.
…and Montana, and Wyoming…
I really feel bad for the folks in New York that live outside of NYC. There are some pretty conservative enclaves outside of NYC. But I’m from Illinoisistan so I guess I don’t feel too bad for them.
I think Remington will find the good People of Huntsville better to work with, better to train and overall better period.
Huntsville is one of my Favorite towns in the US. Redstone Arsenal, Marshall Space Center and the US Space and Rocket center as well as the large number of supporting space and rocket private companies have made that area great to live in. They have a fantastic Public School System .
Good Move Remington, I hope other manufactures follow your lead
I have a very good friend in Huntsville, former Army (finishing up degrees in IT and other electronic wizard-gobbledygook-witchcraft) who is trying to get on with Remington. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him. It would directly benefit seven people (him, wife, and five kids.)
im a ex sugar broker who worked all down the east coast in the 70’s,huntsville is a great place to put a buisness,i had mine there for 20 years, miss it
Being as I live in Huntsville, this article makes me smile a little wider. Remington stood up to the idiocy in New York and my city grows a little stronger. I really hope more companies follow Remington’s lead.
I was at a party in Huntsville. When 3 NASA rocket guys with 5 phd and several masters between them decide to throw a party you can bet its going to be a good time.
As jacked up as TVA was (is) I almost regret not going to work for them because of the area.
Aaahh, Huntsville. I remember there was a place down there called Finnegan’s Iris Pub.
Dammit, Irish.
