Dear Reddit; a TAH history
Some troll by the name of Joe sent us a link to Reddit this morning wherein some of the folks over there discussed This Ain’t Hell behind our backs. Joe said that we should pay attention because it’s what “combat veterans” think of us. Well, actually there are only 9 people in that discussion, so it’s hardly representative of what everyone thinks of us. TAH has between 6,000 and 10,000 people visit everyday, that’s more than 9, I think. We are not a Stolen Valor website. That’s just one of the things we do. If you look at what we’ve written just today, you’ll notice we only discuss things that affect veterans and active duty troops. You know providing that unique perspective that doesn’t appear anywhere else on the internet.
TAH was founded in 2006 as an opinion blog. My opinion. After a few months, I started covering the anti-war protests and getting the pictures and interviews that the media wouldn’t publish. That led me to checking the background of anti-war protesters who claimed outlandish military service. For some reason, after President Bush that demographic pretty much dried up. Folks started sending us other liars to investigate, so following our readership we got into the Stolen Valor business. But still it’s not the only thing that we do.
We are very good at that, by the way. If I have doubts about a particular suspect, I send it out to some of our editors and our lawyer to get their opinions. There are a number of suspects who haven’t had their records published because they didn’t rise to a level that we thought could be Stolen Valor. Of course, you wouldn’t know that.
The reason we’re so careful is because we don’t want to be known as whack-job loons who go after folks who didn’t earn their National Defense Service Medal.
I don’t think you folks at Reddit want to hang your hats on Dallas Wittgenfeld or Joe Teti. Dallas was caught in the media bragging about a Bronze Star Medal that he didn’t earn and wearing a green beret at the Vietnam Wall that he didn’t earn. In fact, the Special Forces Association booted him for misusing his associate membership with them. He has tried to get us all fired from our day jobs because he really wanted to wear that Bronze Star and his green beret. he continues to collaborate with another SV phony who has established a website that accuses us of being child molesters. I don’t see anyone at Reddit attacking them for their completely false attack on us.
Joe Teti is another story all together – I supported his record and claims, but he didn’t like that I wouldn’t delete the comments that weren’t so kind to him. I actually went to the trouble to call him and let him walk me through all of my questions about him. He threatened to sue me over your comments…despite the fact that I had been so charitable with him. I still get hate mail from his fans over the comments, not over something that I wrote.
We are fairly popular because of our careful research. We don’t “walk up to the line”, we stay back from the line. We’ve exposed some of the most famous phonies and that’s probably why we have so many fans – and enemies. Phonies like Tim Poe, the Round Marine, the Round Ranger, Nick Androsky, Michael McManus and countless others. When we’re wrong, we do apologize, but that happens so infrequently, I guess it’s easy to forget.
One of the commenters at Reddit remarked that we update posts with traffic tickets – I’d like to see that. We only care about their military service. Most of the commenters here get upset when the phonies compound their lies in the comments. Folks like The Round Ranger get their asses handed to them when each explanation is worse than what we reported initially.
I’ve been to court a few times because of the blog, and every time it’s because of comments on the blog, not because of anything I wrote. Folks filing legal action against me have to either lie about what I’ve written, or they dragged comments from our archives which were written before we knew their names.
Our intent is to stop Stolen Valor completely. It damages how the American Public views the veterans of their wars. It is not our intent to cause the liars to kill themselves, but we have no sympathy for those who do that. It’s just another of their bad choices. We want prosecutors to get off their ample buttocks and do this work so we don’t have to do it. It’s costly for us to do the job they should be doing, especially since Stolen Valor is usually just an indicator of more serious crimes. I’d prefer to stop doing this, but if I do, who will step up to be the canary in the coal mine?
This Ain’t Hell exists because it’s what veterans want. It exists in the form that does because veterans want it to be like this. And the opinions of nine anonymous people on Reddit won’t change that. Neither will the opinions of the countless trolls and phonies that clog my inbox everyday change this blog.

As has been stated, the Redditors are more butthurt over Teti than Dallas. I’m pretty meh about Teti, but as far as Dallas goes, well…fucking junior rodeo on.
I like Reddit, I really do, they have some very interesting sections.
That said, I’m not sure about this group. I mean really? look at some of the the stuff posted in the same section.
Yeah, reddit is a massive place, anyone can start up a new place (a “subreddit” in the parlance). Heck, the folks here could start a Don Shipley Hair Fan Club subreddit on there and go to town.
The other feature is that reddit users up/down vote comments and posts, bringing them up or down in prominence (and thus visibility). Already in the time Jonn posted this entry, the comments supporting Dullas are being replied to with corrections or downvoted.
I like Reddit, I really do, they have some very interesting sections.

Wow. I saw a discussion on reddit about tattoos that garnered 3000 posts from 1100 redditors. Just sayin.
I didn’t follow Joe’s stuff much, but it seemed the major disagreement was whether he was an OEF/OIF veteran, correct?
To many people HERE you’re only a veteran if you fought in those conflicts in uniform. To plenty of others, you’re a veteran of a war if you fought in it. He fought in it, I believe, as a contractor.
To me, that’s not patently dishonest, that’s simply a different view of the word ‘veteran’. Language often has one official precise meaning, but there can be a more widely accepted alternate meaning. Which is correct is a question for stodgy linguists to whine about.
Is he really a “combat veteran” of OIF or OEF? Many contractors never heard a shot fired in anger. We only have Teti’s word that he did. And with is many embellishments I won’t take his word for it.
I don’t know – but I think it’s entirely possible to have reasonable disagreements on what constitutes a ‘combat veteran’.
The point is, arguing this narrow and understandable point with someone who unquestionably has the training and background he claimed seems unnecessary given the huge swatch of complete and utter posers out there.
That’s just my take on why some people might feel TAH can go overboard at times. As for me, I disagree with Jonn on pretty much everything when it comes to politics, but I feel he (and the others) do pretty well with the SV stuff. I’ve been on here long enough to remember when one poor guy was misidentified early on, but that was quickly corrected. All in all, the balance between the zeal most here feel for dealing with fakes is decently balanced with the due diligence required to ensure they have their facts correct.
To begin with, contractor is such a loose term, and as was said, we really don’t know what he did as a contractor. Then add in that you get paid immensely better as a contractor while doing less, and his attempt to frame himself as an SF vet seems more and more dishonest.
There’s a real difference between combat vets and contractors, and I say this as a man with friends who are both.
I was a contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don’t recall hearing any shots fired in anger when I was in Iraq (Q-west). I did in Afghanistan (Sharana, Waza Khwa, Sayed Abad, Airborne). I was not weapon authorized but I got invited to the range a few times (M4, SAW, MK48, and AK). The mortar crew had me riding the baseplate and let me hang one. The FA guys let me ride the 105 and pull the lanyard. I went outside the wire a few times for very brief periods. At Sayed Abad “the wire” actually toppled over in the mud on the edge of our pad and it was a few weeks before it was repaired. I was very active in the “drug deals” (water pumps and chigos come to mind) and I will miss that. I have never referred to myself as a veteran or as a combat veteran, nor will I…ever. I’m just grateful you guys in uniform put up with me and let me help. It was a privilege and I will never forget.

Bernath’s gotta be reading everything on here if he caught that. Interesting point to raise when he talks about how we’re “stalking” him at this trial he keeps threatening is imminent.
I created the topic on reddit. I’m not “butthurt.” I, along with a number of veterans agree with about 90% of what you do but in those other 10% cases you cross the line.
I will gladly come back later and expand upon that but I have to get back to work.

Joe, you missed the real point, which is that TAH is NOT just about exposing fraudulent claims of service and medals/awards.
It’s other things that are just as important, and maybe more so, including outing people who have filed fraudulent claims of service-connected disability with the VA and reaped some bodacious stuff from it, including disability compensation they should not have received.
Now if you don’t recognize that part, that’s a mistake on your part, but THAT is only one of many things that TAH is about. If you review the stories covered and the categories they are filed under, you will see plainly that TAH covers a broad and diverse range of subjects, that includes the stolen valor frauds.

My biggest gripe is that every once in awhile I will see an old phony’s case brought to light with an update regarding a court case that has zilch to do with him being a poser. If your goal is to prove they never served and you haven proved that point, why do you feel the need to tack it on?
Who said it was to prove only that someone never served? What about those who did serve but blatantly embellished their service and/or rank and/or awards, or claimed that they served longer than their actual time.
Go look at the threads on Bernath and the portrait of a retired Navy man which he stole, planted his own head on, and claimed that it was him, not the actual sitter for the portrait. If you see no justification in exposing that kind of fraud, you aren’t paying attention.
You need to go through the various threads on TAH and look deeper into what is done here before you protest what TAH is doing.

I can’t speak for the guys who run things here, but I think that the entire point of showing what these guys do is to point out that stolen valor doesn’t exist in a vacuum. These guys are not just doing some harmless embellishment as some people claim.
The same kind of guy who would Photoshop his head onto a another persons in uniform picture with awards and rank never earned then post it on his professional website is the same kind of guy who would do all sorts of other misconduct- say for example an altercation in court resulting in a disorderly conduct conviction.
The same kind of guy who would lie about war wounds is the kind who would defraud innocent people who just want to help.
By posting updates, they are showing what kind of people these folks really are, showing that stolen valor doesn’t happen in a vacuum and there are almost always people out there harmed by these scumbags in one way or another.
By starting that on Reddit, yes, you definitely opened a can ‘of worms Joe.

There are several threads on Posers here that run into thousands of posts, and often they have nothing to do with the original claims or subsequent conduct of the individual. It depends a lot the comments posted by the poser or their sock puppets after they are exposed.
One of the more “popular” individuals on poser threads never made a single claim about military service.
Paul K Wickre appeared as a sock puppet for a phony SEAL Phillip Dale Monkress ( who never posted on here).
Wickre probably made close to 1500 posts, which rapidly declined from being a Monkress supporter to attacking the site and blog commenters.
There are Posers on here who committed murder and have under 100 comments on their threads, simply because they went away.

Guess it was a bit much having Bernastypants and Whippenfloppit show up.
I don’t know what happened. Bernath is a piece of shit no questions about it. Mr. Wittgenfeld clearly has some mental issues going on but so do a lot of veterans. That doesn’t take away from his service and heroism in combat.
Personally I think you guys should leave dallas alone. What has me confused the most is why an honorable combat veteran would allow themselves to be represented by someone such as bernath.
The only thing we ever did was show his records, show pictures of him wearing a green beret and bronze star in public, and say that the two didn’t match up. Jonn added that his CIB was highly questionable because he didn’t serve in an infantry MOS; he later admitted openly on the blog that he was wrong about this, which hasn’t stopped Dullass from demanding an “apology”, which he seems to think involves us removing all the other evidence of his OTHER embellishments. We would have been content to let it lie after that, but he doubled down, made many threats to good folks like Mary Schantag whose only crime was to call him on his BS, tried to get many TAH commenters fired from their jobs, created “evidence” blogs on Google+ and Facebook that accuse Jonn and other of being pedophiles and driving people to suicide, among other things, and other stuff that I won’t bother going into. The only reason Dallas’s name is still thought of or mentioned by anyone on this blog is because of his actions and his douchebaggery. He’s the one who won’t let this die, not us. If he wants to be forgotten and not mentioned by us, stopping that would be a first step.
Minor correction, HSSophomore. No photos of WitLessOne wearing a BSM. Just multiple newspaper articles from the mid-1970s referring to him having one.
I’m guessing those reporters got that info from some source other than a FOIA request. FOIA requests weren’t very common or well-known then.

And that is insulting and degrading to veterans. The overwhelming majority of veterans do not steal valor, break the law, or bully and make baseless legal threats. Wittgenfeld MIGHT be a few cards short of a deck (I think it’s more likely he’s just a stupid alcoholic (given his number of alcohol-related criminal offenses) who does a great deal of posting when he’s drunk, giving the impression of mental illness), but don’t go telling me he’s so far gone he can’t tell the diff between right and wrong. He does these things because he’s a shitty person, not because he’s a hopeless wreck in the head. If he was the latter, he probably wouldn’t be working or have any kind of life. He has both.

I can see why you’d think that, but Dallas crossed a line way back by threatening Mrs. Schantag of POW Network and taunting her about the death of her husband. That’s not the only place where he’s crossed a line, but it’s more than enough.
We HAVE left him alone, you ignorant twit! He is the one that will not leave it alone. He threatens, acts stupid, demeans his own service by attacking other veterans and their families and generally displays his lunacy cyclically.
He attacks, we defend and months go by without communication. He posts a new claim somewhere, we defend, then more months go by without communication.
I was among the crowd who was ambivalent toward him simply because there are limited hours in the day and choices must always be made where to direct one’s attention. Then he started making very specific, insane threats, with the apparent means to follow through on those threats toward people I care about. When he went full-blown nuts, with babbling, crude insults, goofy threats and such toward the then recently widowed Mary Schantag he crossed so far over the line into reprehensible behavior that it appeared even to me that he had voluntarily removed himself from the bosom of the veteran community.
He is a very sad case. His violent threats are disgusting, but he is still responsible to all of us for his behavior, just as we are all accountable to each other.

Why would I apologize for voicing an opinion that I and many other service members and veterans I have spoken with in person and on the internet share about this website?
For the most part good work is done here but from time to time things get out of hand. Now whether that is due to the person you are pursuing taking it to the next level or the work of an admin taking it there who knows. I’d venture to say a bit of both happens. Either way if the administrators of this page posses the character traits they point out others are lacking then they would be the bigger person and let it go after their mission is accomplished.
I have been in the military for 9+ years now, serving alongside and directly supporting the men 99% of these fakers claim to be. I take those claims very seriously and take satisfaction in their exposure of being false. What I do not particularly take kind to is the borderline stalking that occurs of a fake long after he has been exposed. At a certain point we have to say they have paid their price and allow them the chance to get on with their life. If they slip up again taking part in the same actions that landed them in this situation in the first place, then by all means hammer them.

I think you’re taking the wrong tack with that, Joe.
The people who the worst offenders are those who refuse to admit that THEY are wrong, who continue to insist that everyone else around them is wrong, and who exist in a cocoon of complete denial.
They almost all follow the same patterns of behavior, so much so that they are almost predictable in what they’ll say and do, including making threats of retribution and legal action – which costs YOU as the taxpayer – and are repeatedly informed they have NO BASIS for their claims, but they keep going back and forth to the courts and are repeatedly rebuffed.
Some of these people are so embedded in their own lies, they will not give them up. They’ve lied to themselves for so long that they refuse to believe reality.
THEY do that. No one goes after them. No one is interested in doing so. And I fail to understand just what objection you could have to an update on something that brings it to a conclusion. How can that be wrong?

Please read through some of the SV threads.
There you will find that it is not us that brings a dead thread back to life. It usually is a puppet on the SV Thief who does that. It is a rare occasion when an update is made because someone who was exposed here originally was arrested for something else and the Admin here update us as to that fact.
As Ex-PH2 stated, we are not interested in “stalking” outed SV Thieves to make their lives miserable. They and they alone come here and start crap with us.

Welcome to the site Joe. I post here from time to time and even click on the donate button and you have no reason to apologize to me. My opinions are exactly that, mine. I do not speak for ‘us’ or ‘we’ and others that tend to write in that manner do not speak for me. This particular guy has a long history with the site.
It pisses me off when I see someone burn the flag, but I defend anyone’s right to piss me off. I dont even like the phrase stolen valor since it is impossible for anyone to steal mine. I do support stopping people from using fake military service for profit or gain. I do not like it when they are real veterans and they use it for profit and gain.
On some posts and on other sites I agree a few people can go too far in the comments sections. A code of conduct or some rules of engagement might be useful. People do have a right to be full of shit….to a point. This is a good site and John gets a ton of shit because of what others post. I do not always agree with everything he says or does but I do respect the man.

Use the search function at the top of this site with “Bernath” and “Wittgenfeld” as search functions. Then take about 2-4 hours to read the links that come up to see their bungholery displayed.
If you failed to do so before defending Wittgenfeld here, you failed to use due diligence and thus acted foolishly. If you indeed did so before defending Wittgenfeld here, IMO you acted reprehensibly in defending the indefensible.
Best to do one’s homework. It drastically limits the occasions when one “plays the fool.”

Joe- From what it looks like to me you have 2 general complaints about TAH, let me make sure I am correct.
1. The comments and following up on any additional information found about a poser done by us commenters.
2. Updates or “resurrection” on old threads of posers.
You are blaming Jonn for the information that us commenters dig up and post. And most every time an old post is resurrected it is done by the poser or a friend or family member that stumbled on to the thread way after it was dead and forgotten by us.
You are blaming Jonn for allowing free speech and also blaming him for a poser bringing themselves back into the spotlight. You do this not by voicing your unfounded allegations here where Jonn will see them and be able to set you straight as I have, but by creating a post on another website knowing Jonn won’t see it. By you doing it on Reddit you have given the posers a forum to spread more lies and misinformation to the point of posting people’s PPI and the web address for a fake TAH. You did great harm and I’m thankful it was slapped down over there. If you had of made your complaints here they would have been discussed and you would have discovered the truth and then been thanked for your service and welcomed to TAH. Instead it looks as you blame innocent people for other’s actions and agree that Stolen Valor is no biggie. It’s not too late to be welcomed here but you do owe Jonn an apology as has been pointed out by myself and others. You can NOT blame him for our comments or the actions of others. Free speech and free will, he supports them both whether he agrees with them or not.
