Coming for the children
Gateway Pundit writes this morning that Obama has outlined his plan to indoctinate the children into community service (so they, too, can be President someday) by requiring 50 hours every year for elementary and high school students and 100 hours every year for college students. Again, more examples of what IS NOT charity – government-mandated work is not service to the community.
The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America,
JammieWearingFool also writes that Rahm Emanuel is on the same sheet of music with what Emanuel calls “The Real Patriot Act”
Here’s how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They’ll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we’re hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities’ most pressing needs.
What do I have against “community service”? Nothing. Anyone who volunteers their time is an exceptional person and commands my respect. But forced service? In the name of the community? It’s nothing short of collectivism – it assumes that we’re all the same, that we all just lay around watching TV and playing video games. That we all react the same way to the blessings of the Obama Messiah.
And what happens when the shine wears off the new program – when people stop showing up for their mandatory charity? Fines? Jail time? Re-education camps? Another aspect of our lives regulated? Will we then have to form an enforcement agency and a network of tattletales to inform on shirkers?
What have we created here?

The indoctrination begins at home. Yikes.
Shameless bog pimping going on here, but hey I am just trying to get some attention. I wrote about this also this morning.
See here
I guess the 13th Amendment, with its prohibition against involuntary servitude, is one of those “negative” values that the Obamunist doesn’t like too much.
This BROWNSHIRT concept has been scaring me ever since I heard about it. Truly frightening. We need to stay on top of this before it gains any traction at all.
The Thunder Run has linked to this post in the – Web Reconnaissance for 11/07/2008 A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day…so check back often.
Mandatory volunteerism, kind of an oxymoron, isn’t it! This proposal by Obama is “collectivism” Jonn. Why should we be surprised, Obama is a radical socialist.
Hell I believe 2 years mandatory in the Marine Corps for every 18 yr old would be ideal. In lieu of that mandatory community service or Peace Corps could only be beneficial to the young people serving and our country.
You want to bring back the draft, wheeler? I don’t. Serving in the Armed Forces should be voluntary. I volunteered and so did Jonn and many others who post here.
We’re back to becoming a conscription nation. It’s arguably constitutional since there’s verbage in there about “raising an army”, but I doubt the constitution talks about a “civil defense training”, whatever the hell that is.
One of the first acts of Congress after passage of the Constitution was the Militia Act, which still survives in the law to this day. Title 10, U.S. Code, Section 311. If you are a male citizen between 17 and 45, or a female National Guard officer, you are a member of the militia. This is the law that enables the U.S. Government to draft for military service.
I just left a country,Venezuela, in part because they wanted my 16 year old daughter to do mandatory service. Mandatory work without pay? SLAVERY!
I volunteered for Marine Corps but I believe Every young adult should serve nation in some capacity for minimum 2 years. No exceptions. As said, good for them and their country
I believe Jungle Mom just hit on something…

While I agree with you that serving our country is good for a person to do and good for the country, I’m going to have to disagree with you that this service should be mandatory.
Rochester Thanks.Though how few people who’ve served voluntarily or drafted have not come out better people and better citizens for the experience Sometimes the youngsters need a well directed push. They ofcourse should be paid.Screw Chavez in Ven.
Israel has mandatory military service and it seems to help the young men to mature and gain responsibility.
However, performing service to protect the country over service that is meant to further Obama’s ideological goals, some of which are frightening to say the least, is something different altogether.
I may have to return to homeschooling just to get the kids back off the radar.
One good thing is that the government is so damn slow and ineffecient, Obama will be out before any progress is made.
Its not only the kids. he wants to conscript everybody – including retirees. Maybe That One will set us to building a great big canal, like was done in the 1920s. My job will be to teach the obamites the meaning of “obstructive cooperation” and “bad attitude”.
