Egyptian military warns government and protesters

| July 1, 2013

Ex-PH2 sends us a link from NBC which tells us that Egyptian protesters are dying and and being injured by the scores despite the fact that our President has called for them to stop the violence.

Sixteen people were killed and more than 700 were wounded during the protests Sunday and early Monday.

[…]

As the military statement was read, President Barack Obama urged all sides to refrain from violence shortly after he arrived in Tanzania.

Kinda like the neighbor yelling at the kids down the street.

The Washington Times reports that the Egyptian military has warned both sides to stop the fighting, but they seem to be leaning a bit towards the protesters;

“The Armed Forces repeat its call for the people’s demands to be met and give everyone 48 hours as a last chance to shoulder the burden of a historic moment for a nation that will not forgive or tolerate any party that is lax in shouldering its responsibility,” it said.

It did not directly define “the people’s demands,” but said if they are not realized, the military is obliged to “announce a road-map for the future and the steps for overseeing its implementation, with participation of all patriotic and sincere parties and movements.”

I hope our embassy folks there have their bags packed.

“I hope our embassy folks there have their bags packed.” I wonder, will there be a contingency plan to help those people out this time around?

When will Barry issue his “RED LINE” warning?

I have more hope for a salvaged “failed state” if the military backs the protesters. My understanding is that the protesters are of a more secular bent and want the Muslim Brotherhood out because of that.

One could hope. Morsi has been busy militarizing Zone C in the Sinai, and perhaps that would stop under a different government.

@1. The administration DOES have a contingency plan. It’s called “hope.”

AFRICOM commander GEN Rodriguez probably isn’t sleeping too well…the thought of having to report to a bunch of meatheads – Obama/Hagel/Dempsey and throw in SKerry. Not ready for Prime Time/3 A.M. phone call.

The protests against the Islamist governments in both Egypt and Turkey are heartening-best of luck to them.

@1 – They announced the other day that they had a force of 200 Marines on standby to protect the embassy and evacuation of personnel. Another couple of thousand are also available on ships nearby.

It was reported this weekend that over 60,000 foreigners, including diplomats and families, had already left the country. All flights to Europe and the US are booked and the Egyptian military is guarding the airport.

Sorta makes me “hope” CODEPink gets involved again…No ill wishes or anything but the world might be a better place without ’em.

@11 – Medea “The Mouth” Benjamin to the rescue, eh?

If the Egyptian military is not satisfied with Morsi’s response, they may take steps to remove him. They gave him 48 hours as of this morning their time, to reform his government.

They are siding with the protesters.

Finally, something over there makes some sense.

Egypt has been dependent on tourism to boost its economy for a very long time. Its almost their biggest industry, and it has dropped off drastically since last year because of Morsi and the Musllim Brotherhood. The infrastructure is also beginning to fall apart, which makes Egyptians extremely unhappy. The Aswan High Dam was built to provide electricity for everyone, so why is the power service not working properly?

I’m really glad that the military is backing the protesters.
