Mario Wilson, Army vet, saves restaurant from gunman

| April 22, 2013

Mario Wilson

ROS sends us a link to the story about Army veteran, SFC Mario Wilson, who prevented Leonard Bond from re-entering a Denny’s in Indiana, when it’s believed that Wilson spotted Bond’s gun through the window of the restaurant.

“He seen the danger that was about to come in and he wouldn’t let that young man come in to hurt anyone else. He was not going to let that young man come back in there.”

[Karen Dunbar, Wilson’s fiance`] and other customers were just a few steps behind Wilson but before they stepped outside, there were three gunshots.

“By that time I hit the door and Mario was fighting the guy. He had…he’s been shot and he still had the man’s arm…the man can’t get (to his gun).

“I grabbed the man’s arms as well and in between the two, Mario had eye-to-eye…looking at this young man and keeping him from being able to pull the trigger again.”

The gun clattered off across the pavement. The customers wrestled Bond to the ground. Dunbar tried to save Wilson’s life.

Still saving the world from itself.

Damn…sad but also inspiring…prayers for his family…

Such a waste. I guess he was another one of those potential terrorist veterans that Big Sis is so afraid of.

My sympathies to his family and friends. He was doing what all of us veterans believe we’d do in a similar situation.

This is a sad story on a number of levels. The comments from the Indy Star today indicate Wilson was a good man. Some of the comments are from this with whom he served. Others are from current coworkers. According to IN court records, Bond was arrested for two felonies ( Handgun violation—no license and Receiving Stole Property) last July and was released on $500 bond. Ultimately a deal was struck and he pled guilty to Receiving Stolen Property. The handgun charge and a misdemeanor were dismissed. He was sentenced this past January and received an 18 month SUSPENDED sentence in favor of probation. The reason I looked this matter up is because a 26-year old who criminally shoots someone usually has a history of being given breaks by prosecutors and judges. I can throw this matter on that pile.

RIP and prayers to his family and friends.

I’ll forego my other comments at this time and concentrate on SFC Wilson and those left behind.

Another great American sent to an early grave, by another youngster who was never taught that there are serious consequences to wrong doing; ie, another spoiled, petulant child in an adult body.

Well done, Brother, see you in a while…

Green Thumb

A true hero.

Sleep well, fallen brother.

What if there was a national movement, as vocal as the gun control movement, to drop the hammer on criminal scumbags with twenty-five year mandatory minimum sentences with NO possibility of parole for violent felons? Can you imagine how many incidents just like this one would be completely avoided? Can you imagine how many lives would be saved?

I don’t understand why there is not a movement underway to passionately and LOUDLY advocate for CRIMINAL CONTROL as an alternative to gun control. Unlike the gun control movement which accomplishes NOTHING, the proposals of this movement, if implemented, would truly save countless lives and keep society safe from shitbags who would shoot someone to death over petty bullshit. Seriously.

Prayers out for this fallen soldier and his family.

RIP Mr. Wilson, GOD Bless..

#14, Mandrax: INDEED! We DON’T need more laws, we need effective enforcement of those that already exist.. Here in Florida, we have Concealed Carry and the 10/20/Life Law. Pull a gun when committing a crime, 10 years. Fire the gun while doing so, 20 years. Shoot someone while doing so, 20 to life, all mandatory time. Our CCW Laws also deal with reckless displaying of a firearm, this was printed in the pamphlets accompanying my CCW: A woman was having a disagreement with her Mechanic over the repair price. The Mechanic explained that she signed agreeing that there was a lien on her car until the bill was paid, and he then went and disconnected a radiator hose to prevent her from driving off without paying. The woman came back in brandishing her handgun for leverage in the argument and received a three year mandatory sentence for doing so. Guns don’t cause crime, criminals do!!

Common Sense

Heartbreaking. RIP Mario Wilson and condolences to his family.

@14. There are three-strike laws in many states. What you’re advocating is one strike. They somewhat exist, too, in states with mandatory minimums. The problem is that prosecutors will reduce a charge for a guilty plea and there are provisions that allow judges to exercise discretion in sentencing, notwithstanding the mandatory minimum.

defensor fortissimo

Anyone recall a dennys kicking out a bunch of cops because they were armed? I realize this is a different part of the chain, but perhaps it would behoove the offending party to note that this is why it’s wise to let said cops keep their weapons.

God Bless Mario, those like him, and his family. The world is less of a place without him.

After reading the comments in the Indy Star, I noted that they indicated Wilson was a good man. After viewing the video in the followup today, it is clear that ‘good’ doesn’t come close. Wilson was the kind of man we all hope we could be and pray our sons will be. God bless him. He was a great man.
