Fox News: Jimmy Lee Dykes is dead
Fox News is reporting on their broadcast that Jimmy Lee Dykes has been killed “after some sort of explosion” (it sounds like a suicide) and the five-year-old that he’s been holding is safe. (No links anywhere yet)
Fox also says that Jimmy Lee Dykes was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam era with a Vietnam service ribbin of some sort, so I may have been wrong. But he was a aviation mechanic, so I still don’t know how being a veteran had anything to do with this situation. Unless the ice cream machine on the mess deck had broken down for an entire day, or his hunt aboard ship for an ice cold Coke drove him to madness.
Here’s an ABC link. They call him a “decorated Vietnam vet”. According to Fox, his highest award was a Good Conduct Medal – so yeah he was decorated, but barely.

Thank God that the kid is unharmed.
I read in this mornings paper (it was an AP story) That this asshole was a “Decorated Vietnam Veteran” When will the negative stereotype of the crazed Vietnam vet end? So sad for true heroes of that war.
One story I saw today was calling him a “decorated Vietnam veteran” My aching ass! It sounds like Jimmy the “hero” died after the flash-bang went boom. Don’t know yet whether he shot himself or the Feds got him, anyway, Jimmy can burn in hell now.
I am relieved.
His madness included believing that he was going to be abducted by space aliens.
Was that child released before the flash and bang? So long he’s safe….
@#1, NR: AMEN TO THAT!!
As to the liberal media, especially the ASSociated Piss, I lost the last bit of confidence and respect i ever had for them during my tour in A-Stan, they have NO integrity, just their political agenda.
Not sure how you can be decorated without combat related awards……
This really is not the appropriate place to ask this question, but it seems there is some confusion on what “decorated” means. Where do I find a list of what awards count as decoration and which do not?
(Before this deteriorates into something unpleasant, I am in the group who hold those who were shot at in very high esteem. Yes, I honor all who serve in every capacity simply because it always takes everyone to get the total mission accomplished. But, I cannot keep from feeling a bit of extra esteem for those took fire whether on the ground, in the air or aboard ship.)
@8, Being decorated, in my opinion, is earning something more than the usual “thank you for coming” or “I didn’t step on my crank” awards.
@9: but the military does shit like this: http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2012/04/air-force-tech-sergeants-take-heat-bronze-stars-041612/
Unless that shit is combat related it doesn’t mean shit in my book.
Marine Corps need to change their “good conduct medal” to “didn’t get caught medal” to accurately reflect it’s true meaning.
So would a SSG with a Meritorious Service Medal count as decorated? What about an infantryman with both an EIB and a CIB? Long tab…short tab? Just trying to figure out how to define “decorated.”
It would be nice if the MSM’s would start using Vietnam ERA Vet. Just say’n.
@13…average “Joe” wouldn’t notice the subtle difference
Fuck Jimmy I hope he didnt die too quick. I wish that he had at least a split second of awareness, that whatever clusterfuck mission he was on had failed and he was about to die before the bullet splattered his brains. Swat should plan to provide that awareness.
@8 From AR 310-25 Dictionary of United States Army Terms
decoration (A)
Distinctively designed mark of honor denoting heroism or meritorious
or outstanding service or achievement. The decorations, in order of precedence, follow : Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldier’s Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Purple Heart. See also award.
According to the tards iver at Puffho, conservative talk radio made him do it…How does anyone this stupid survive?
I do not even think that Good Conduct Medal is not Decorations but a Service Medal. It has its own slot in after the decorations.
Thanks, all. This has explained a lot.
For the record, even without knowing the Army specifics, I would never haved allowed myself to be referred to as “highly decorated.” Would maybe have gone along with “decorated” simply because I have quite a lot of fruit salad, some of which was earned for specifics things I did individually. But none of it above purple heart level.
Don’t think it has ever been an issue, but I will make sure that it never is in the presence of Army personnel and/or retirees. No sense in asking for scorn. (grin)
The boy is safe, thank you Lord. And now, for Dykes. Adios, mo fo, adios. No thanks to you for giving the MSM a chance at associating the rest of us vet’s with your personal problems or belief’s.
You lied to people and claimed you were a veteran of the US Army Rangers. I would have you know that I know far many more men that are true, Rangers and have never laid a hand on or needlessly taken another’s life.
Instead, you brought more shame upon yourself and all the other posers that claim an unearned greatness they nor you don’t have the balls and courage to earn.
When any of you poser mo fo’s are wanting to go out with a bang, be big boys about it, not cowards. Stand on your own two feet and fight to the end. Maybe, just maybe you will get a feel for some kind of honor, however hollow sounding it may be.
I earned a couple awards when I was in. Marksman, Pistol, .45 ACP. Sharpshooter, Rifle,Auto M-16. Marksman, Shotgun,12 ga. Driver, sedan, 1/4, 1/2 ton gun truck(M60)and V100 w/30 & 50 cal weapons qualification to the best of my memory.I will say the V100 with those two MG’s rocked and rolled. Ha! And what ever ribbon it is for stateside service and the privilege to wear a black brassard bearing the dreaded white letters, MP.
I’m so relieved the kid is alright.
Joe won’t weigh in on this one because it doesn’t involve dead children that he can exploit. And neither will any other Libtard.
I am glad the boy is ok. And I hope and pray that he suffers no long term mental effects from this ordeal. I hope that he has good and loving parents who will be patient with him, and guide him through this. And may G-d help and guide them all.
And among all this, this reaffirms my belief in and knowledge of G-d, our Eternal and Just Father in Heaven, that He has dealt justice most swiftly and surely to Mr Dykes (may his soul burn in hell forever).
Ptew! (spit)
I echo the previous thanks for the boy’s save return. As for Mr. Dykes, dollars to donuts he’s about 100 quarts low on some high potency antipsychotic. That report of him putting tin foil on the windows of his van is straight out of the crazy town handbook.
@18 Agreed. That’s the definition that I subscribe to.
CC Senior/Sporkmaster/Rochambeau: that’s the technically correct definition, even if AR 310-25 is now obsolete (not sure what replaced it), with one caveat: the Army Achievement Medal and the DoD decorations (DDSM, DSSM, DMSM, JSCM, JSAM) should be added to that list. Not sure why the AAM was omitted, as it existed the last time AR 310-25 was published. The Defense Decorations were probably omitted to keep the definition Army-only.
Sister service equivalents (e.g., Navy Cross, AFCOM, etc . . . ) would also be considered decorations when properly awarded to a soldier or received during prior service with another service.
The GCM is more properly an award (in the category of service medal) vice a decoration, as is the ARCAM.
Expeditionary and campaign medals, service medals, unit commendations, badges, and tabs under the now-obsolete definitions from AR 310-25 would all be awards vice decorations.
All that said: the media appears to equate receipt of any type of medal (personal decoration, campaign medal, service medal) with being “decorated”. That’s technically wrong, but we’re probably not going to change 50+ years of the press “getting it wrong” on this point and might as well just accept that.
I think I pooped a brick – the Huffington Post correctly identifies him as a “Vietnam-era Veteran” and points out his service was from 64 to 69, and the closest he came to ‘Nam was Japan.
BK: other sources I’ve seen say Dykes qualified for the VSM, which technically makes him a “Vietnam Vet”. Many Navy ships making a WESTPAC deployment qualified, as the defined AOE for the VSM extended well out to sea – over 100NM in some places, if I recall correctly. Only 1 day in the defined AOE was required for receipt of the medal for persons assigned to a unit or ship deployed to the area and supporting operations there. TDY required 30 days consecutive or 60 nonconsecutive.
Whichever turns out to be the case – thank God the kid’s safe and apparently doing well.
