Why does VoteVets hate America? (With Update) VoteVets hates teachers and cops, even Veteran ones.
Got back from Vegas last night (having lost 10/12 bets, and the two I won were for other people) and the first thing I am greeted by is this piece of shit television commercial from VoteVets. Please watch it at least twice, and try to figure out what this numbnuts is talking about:
Just off the top of my head, this commercial is completely assinine for a number of reasons.
1) You didn’t take a “pledge” before you deployed to Iraq, you took an Oath to support and defend our country. You only changed it to “pledge” to try to make a dopey argument that doesn’t even work on its merits.
2) “Richard Mourdock sees pledges differently.” Dumb, unsupported by facts. See #3.
3) Um, Mourdock didn’t take a pledge to save all Indiana jobs. If you had him making such a pledge and breaking it, that would be a commercial.
Let’s look at how idiotic such a pledge would be. Back in the mid 1700’s and early 1800’s, Massacusetts streets (Boston, other cities) were lit by Whale Oil lamps. Each night dutiful employees of the Commonwealth would set out and light these things so that shady characters couldn’t do nefarious things in the night. Now, what happened to those whale oil lamp lighters? Do you mean to tell me that all the people engaged in that occupation in Massachusetts have been let go? Are you kidding me? We put all those people out of jobs? Why does the Mass State Gov’t have a historical hatred towards their workers?
Well, it was no longer financially efficient to use whale oil lamps. We went with lightbulbs. Is this idiot really saying that Mass should still employ the same number of lamp lighters?
What about carriage folk? Should Mass have banned the automobile so that these hard working homosapiens and their equine coworkers could still have jobs?
4) Mourdock opposed the Chrysler bailout because when you look at the cost/benefit of it, we come out in the red. Why have people working in occupations that on the whole end up costing money for the society?
During the evenings of late I have been listening to the book Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny by Robert Wright. (Highest recommendation for those interested in history and social science.) In it he talks about how the societies that adapted most quickly to new technologies were the ones that have historically “Won.” He talks about China and how the Ming Dynasty tried to shut itself off from the world, and they suffered for 400 years because of it. Once you are plugged in, unplugging will only lead to your demise as a society. China has played catch up ever since.
Now, if other cars can be made or purchased for less money, relieving the stress on the purchaser, but putting some folks out of work, wouldn’t it stand to reason that society as a whole should figure out the most cost effective way to get those people employed? If Japan can fish for 1/2 of what it costs Australia, and Australia can produce wood for 1/2 of what it costs Japan, doesn’t it make sense for Japan to import wood and export fish? (Just an example, I am not an Australian import/export specialist).
If Chrysler is losing money hand over fist, and taking the taxpayers with them, why the hell should we continue on? Isn’t the economy dynamic enough to find something else that these people could do?
Isn’t that what the free market all about?
I was initially ambivalent on the Indiana Senate Race. I wanted Lugar gone, because I just find him to be wretched. I don’t much care for my other GOP Senator either. But this ad is so idiotic and panders to morons that Mourdock just locked down my vote.
Yes, Veterans need jobs. But we aren’t training them to light whale oil lanterns because that doesn’t serve the purposes of the country. How about we find occupations that have some viability in the long term for these folks, instead of shoving them into a business that is costing the American taxpayers money?
This article makes my point for me. Wonder how many Vets were employed making batteries no one could afford.
UPDATE: Shame on me for not looking up VoteVets’ crappy research. Here is the article they use as a source on their claims. I’ll highlight part of it:
State Treasurer Richard Mourdock is reviving his dormant effort to call the Chrysler bankruptcy proceedings into question.
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a June bid by three Indiana funds to block a deal that Mourdock, a former Vanderburgh County commissioner, said would break from ordinary process and cost Indiana funds millions of dollars.
On Thursday, Mourdock’s office asked the Supreme Court to reconsider the questions he raised about the federal government-backed sale of the bulk of Chrysler’s assets to Italian automaker Fiat.
Mourdock, a Republican, argues that Chrysler’s sale was unfair to secured creditors, such as Indiana’s Major Moves transportation fund and state pension funds for teachers and police officers, which his office estimates lost $6 million in value in the sale.
Instead, unsecured stakeholders, such as the United Auto Workers union, received more value.
So, there you have it. Mourdock was being a steward of the public funds, and trying to get that money for actual Hoosiers like me who pay their taxes, and instead VoteVets goes after the unemployed veterans (number unknown.) Here’s an idea, how about spending the money that went to the UAW on veterans training instead? I assume VoteVets would fight against that as well, because let’s be honest, they care much less about veterans than they do doing attack ads against Republicans.
How do these guys get away with claiming they are non-partisan?

TSO, since when have those towards the liberal end of the political spectrum ever listened to economic common sense?
That’s just it, TSO. No batteries have been made. According to the local NBC affiliate, that factory hasn’t produced one single battery. As a matter of fact, one could say that LG Chem is the Solyndra of the battery producers, except they haven’t gone bankrupt……….yet.
TSO, that article about LG Chem makes your point plus a dozen others….
The government is good at funding research as policy, think NASA, and bad at funding actual production, think GM/Chrysler…research NIH grants for the public health good idea, Wall Street bailout to keep rich guys rich, not so good….
I still like hearing dems tell me that Romney wanted Detroit to go bankrupt when they’ve never read anything but the headline of that article. Dems like to bust folks b4lls about Fox News talking points when they have their own MSNBC talking points as well. Their talking point is a headline that misrepresents the actual article under the headline, at least in a talking point about Obama you have classic investment failure like Solyndra, LG Chem, GM, et al…thinking GM is still operating the same way it was 10 years ago is a good thing shows exactly how little this administration understand the necessity of what you point out in your article about ascertaining ever more effective means of increasing competitiveness through productivity increases.
I am trying to keep Warren from getting elected here in MA, best of luck getting Mourdock where you need him.
TSO, Dead on! That is exactly what FREE MARKET is about. We have to look outside of our factories and find what is viable to our economy. High priced autos is not the answer, actually, if you come right down to it, they cost so much predominately because of the unions. If a risk taking individual were to develop a reliable auto for less money because they were not tied down by any union, they would be ran out of the country! I know this is not only about the auto industry. Capitalism and free market work, bottom line.
I would pay cash money to debate this guy anywhere under any circumstances. I get that he was given a script and read it, but come on….the argument here is so stupid that it actually makes veterans look even dumber.
That was a real vague, desperate, and irrelevant commercial. Let’s hope many of us who think so will go to the VoteVets FB page and say so!
Take a look at the article that VV uses in the ad.

He is operating as the State Treasurer trying to recover the CITIZEN’s pension money that the Chrysler purchase by Fiat cost them.
“Mourdock, a Republican, argues that Chrysler’s sale was unfair to secured creditors, such as Indiana’s Major Moves transportation fund and state pension funds for teachers and police officers, which his office estimates lost $6 million in value in the sale.”
The beloved Police, Teachers and (you didn’t build that) highways?
Sounds to me like he was doing his JOB.
But see that’s the point. While trying not to get conspiratorial the point of the liberal agenda is to make expensive. They don’t really deny it. If things are expensive then we can’t so as much.
Take cars and fuel. If it costs more we can’t drive as far, both heling the green agenda and limiiting travel and slowing commerce (an essential in a capitalist society).
Cash For Clunkers, while on the surface seemed good but all it did was put people in debt agian with car payments. In the Michigan area there really isn’t a need to buy a new car. You can find good cars cheap i fyou are willing to go to used lots or even private sales. Cash For Clunkers had a reverse effect. I have bought 3 cars with cash all at least 6-10 years old and in GREAT condition.
Doing the math if you spend 200-300 on a car payment you will easily spend 2200-3300 a year. Why not budget that for car repairs. Around here that can really fix a lot of things and if you go over….well…time for a “new” car.
damn. I may not be helping the auto industry so much but 50K on a car is nuts. I won’t judge any one we all have our own priorities but there are other ways that will get you there.
Still look at SmartCars. Where does that make sense. They cost 20-30K. How in the hell does that work when the manufacturing material alone is far less than my F150 Super Cab truck? I can fit two of them in the bed of my truck!
Chrysler, which is now owned by Fiat (so it’s Fiat-Chrysler now) is now operating in the black.

I watched many of those Detroit getto videos last night, and until now, I had no idea that the hourly wage & benefits for UAW workers had been negotiated to a whopping $74/hour. On a 40 hour work week, that’s $2,960 per week. No wonder Detroit has become a ghost of its former self. And Detroit can thank the unions for that. Labor unions were once a good idea, because they worked to get a fair wage for a day’s work and better working conditions. But they long ago became corrupted by their own greed.
I’m just waiting to see how many school districts start cutting teaching and other jobs, along with sports, music and art — things that make a well-rounded kid — because the teachers’ union in Illinois wants more than the state tax base can support.
Well, to answer the rhetorical question of how they get away with calling themselves “nonpartisan”; they’ve recently changed their mission statement to add this line; “While non-partisan, the group is the largest progressive organization of veterans in America.” so, you see, it’s not their fault that all of the “progressives” are Democrats. At the same time, they added the line that they support the destruction of terror networks worldwide. You know, as if a real veterans’ organization would have to add that to their mission statement.
the school situation in detroit is nuts. DPS has a $1B budget and can’t manage it. Most of all it is no longer supportable due to population loss.
Kinda makes me want to vote for the guy. Luckily everyone I know in Indiana already is planning to.
Donnely lost my vote last week anyway when I heard him talking about how the right and left wings were polarizing and we needed someone in the middle. Great sentiment, and I agreed. And then he said “Which is why I work with Andre Carson and others…..” Now, this was on a black radio channel (I guess the color of the channel isn’t key, it’s just one that caters to African Americans) and the guy he is praising (Carson) is the same one who said that Tea Partiers (and I loathe the IN Tea Party) won’t be happy until all the black people are swinging from trees.
Really? That’s your moderate in Indiana?
Screw him.
I am voting Dem in the Governor race, but only because the guy has zero shot of winning, and I sat next to him at a dinner two months ago and REALLY liked him. I like Pence too, but Pence didn’t go out of his way to engage me personally when I sat on a plane with him, whereas Gregg (the moustache guy) was just a delightful dinner companion.
If only I could vote in Indiana. I only get to listen to the radio ads and there is nothing I can do about it.
VoteVets is a horrible organization that gives the impression to civilian Amerians that they are representing all Vets. I’d hate for Americans to get the impression that most Vets support the Democratic Party. VoteVets isnt for all Vets, just Dems, regardless of what they advertise. They dont support all Vets running for office by any means, just those with Liberal views.
“And Detroit can thank the unions for that”. And, Ex, the unbroken string of democrat mayors for the last 50 years. The last time Detroit had a Republican mayor, JFK was still 11 months away from his trip to Dealey Plaza. The dems have done such a wonderful job for Detroit.
The problem has been identified and we need new jobs to train those vets for.
Solution.
Pooper-scoopers, S#it shovelers, crap cleaners.
Employed in and around Wash DC they’ll always have plenty of work to do.
@17 – I disagree. I think that politicians should have to clean up their own crap.
