Sgt. James Bennett; saving the world two people at a time

| September 10, 2012

Chief Tango sends us a link to the story of Sgt. James Bennett who was home on leave when duty called;

He was on leave in January when he and his father, J.D., witnessed a fiery car crash in Fresno. They pulled a 2-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl from the burning car. The children’s parents did not survive.

“Me and my dad you know, it’s just a natural reaction. You just see somebody struggling and you help out. I mean that’s what you’re supposed to do. Anybody should do it, and that’s what we did that night,” said Bennett.

The Army awarded Sgt. Bennett the Soldiers Medal, the highest award for valor not in combat.

Not only SGT Bennet’s actions, but also his response….are by and large the standard for those that are serving and have served. They continually bring out the best of us.

Good parents, good kids, it’s not really hard to figure this stuff out.

Indeed Sgt. Bennett, you represent the best of America. Thank you for your service and God Bless.

….bringing honor upon himself, his unit and the United States Army….

I wonder if his father is a vet?

Now this is the way I like to start off my day and week.

I’m more than grateful that Sgt. James Bennett and his father were in the “right place at the right time” to save those folks. And I’m grateful that the Army recognized Sgt. Bennett for his actions.

Way back in the day, mid 1980’s, I was stationed at Camp Lejeune. We had two guys get a letter from the Governor of North Carolina because they saved a few people from a burning building. I think they also got medals from the Marine Corps. After formation broke up and we were heading into our shop, my roommmate, who I will call Fat Murph for the sake of this converation, said “Man, that’s f’ed up!” I said “What’s f’ed up, Murph?” “I saved a guys life once, and I got nothing.” To which I repsonded “How did you save a guys a life?” “When I was in Okinawa, my roommate came back from town drunk, and I rolled him on his stomach so he he wouldn’t choke on his vomit if he threw up.” I was so amazed at his act of courage with no regard to his own safety, I was almost compelled to get everyone into formation right then and there and have the Commander award him on the spot. I think I even sent his act of courage into Reader’s Digest to be featured in their Drama In Real Life series. I’m still waiting for it to get published 25 years later. You hang in there Murph, your day will come.

Old Tanker, his Dad is a vet. Sgt. JD Bennett, U.S. Marine Corps. He is now currently the Vice Commander at Fresno American Legion. He raised a brave U.S. Soldier also. Thanks for recognizing his bravery.
