“Emily Gets Her Gun” testifies

| February 1, 2012

If you didn’t see my original link on the series, Emily Miller of the Washington Times has documented her experience while trying to obtain a legal gun with which to protect herself as a resident of the District of Columbia, which has been forced by the Supreme Court to allow legal handgun ownership. Miller recently testified to the Judicial Committee of the District and recorded her testimony in her column;

Which brings me to the astronomical cost of registering a gun in DC. On top of Sykes’s fees, I paid $225 for the class. $35 for range fees and ammunition. The passport photos cost $20. Then I paid the city $35 for fingerprints, $13 for gun registration and $12 for a ballistics test.

So I have spent a total of $465 in fees. And that doesn’t include the cost of the gun!

I had no idea registering a gun would be this expensive.

It’s especially expensive when you consider that the only state fees you incur in West Virginia is the sales tax on the gun. I think the gun safety class I took for my CCW license was $75 and the license itself was $100 because I opted for the laminated one with my picture on it which was an extra $25.

But, back to DC. There are thousands of unregistered and uninsured automobiles in the District because they’ve made it so expensive to maintain a vehicle there. The practice has apparently seeped into the gun owning process, too. There are so many illegal guns in the District precisely because the government wants to limit LEGAL GUN OWNERSHIP – a self fulfilling prophecy.

Thanks to ROS for the link.

Hmmmm…IIRC, mine cost $10 to the PD to cover background check. As a veteran, no class required.

Didn’t even pay sales tax on the gun. Gotta love New Hampshire.

One of the many reasons I loved living in Alaska, right to purchase authorized right to carry. Same day purchase and each seller did a background check while you waited. Only question I ever got from a Police Officer was what caliber I was shooting at the range.

You know, it just occured to me: If the reason Southern States are disallowed by the Federal Government from requiring photo ID to vote is because “it financially restricts” the rights of voters, shouldn’t that also be applied to those exercising their 2nd Amendment rights?

Isn’t it just as “racist” to place a financial barrier to the self-protection of the poor and minorities of DC, as it is to place a much lesser financial barrier on them to prove they are the person they claim to be voting for?

Speaking of the 2nd Amendment, Madison Rising released their new single “Right to Bear” yesterday.

WOTN–no, keeping people defenseless isn’t racist, you see, while ensuring the integrity of the voting process is, at least by their “logic”.

@1- I’m originally from Massachusetts, but about a month ago I changed my state residency to NH. Immediately I noticed an extra 120 bucks in my paycheck. There’s a lot of benefits about being a resident of the Grantie State.

Imagine if you had to shell out $400+ in order to practice any of your other Constitutional Rights?

Want to vote? $400
Want to practice your religion? $400
Want due process of law and a speedy trial? $400…. Wait that’s pretty cheap considering the usual lawyer costs!! Ok that one can stay.

The Bill of Rights… Now for the low introductory price of EIGHT payments of $399.95!!!

Bah–some good, some bad. More bad if you’re not the self-reliant type. Yeah, property taxes are teh suck up here (almost $25 per $1000 this year in my town) but considering what that same house would run me where I lived in CA, and the sales and income taxes, etc., I was paying there, ain’t even close.

Gotta love driving I-93 or 95…it’s like a fraternity party. You stop, pay your toll, they might as well give you a cup and say, “Hey, liquor store is a mile that way–and take off your seatbelt, ya big pussy!”

But back on topic, yes, it’s nice that MOST town police chiefs understand AND PRACTICE the concept of “shall issue” when it comes to CCW permits. You might run into a dickhead now and then, but for the most part if you’ve kept your nose clean, you’re going to be good to go.

Virtual Insanity

Alabama: $20 a year for CCW, no class. We’re slowly educating the police that it’s an open-carry state. PX on post sells firearms; same-day pickup. Crime and cost of living here are pretty low.

However, Yankees, there’s no more room here for you. Sorry.

Adam_S

Georgia: $75 for CCW. No waiting periods for buying guns. No classes required and no fee for the background check.

Flagwaver

When I got pulled over for a blown-out tail light, I handed the cop my CCW along with my other info when he asked. He didn’t look nervous or anything and asked me what kind of a pistol I had. Well, it is an M-1911A1. His eyes went wide and asked me to step to the other side of his car (out of view of passing motorists). He was in the Corps back in the 80s and hadn’t seen one in a while. Dear God, he was like a kid seeing the brand new toy on the market. Even checked and cleared it when he handed it back to me (just like I did when I handed it to him).

Dirty Al the Infidel

@Adam the background fee is in the cost for the permit. Mine was actually $85. In Ga its also called a Ga Weapons Carry License (GWCL). Which covers both open carry and concealed. Back in the 80s you could open carry with no permit.

LC BU1

Here in PA you can open carry any where outside of what is termed a “Class A” city, which is Philadelphia, and probably including Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, also. Concealed Carry is $25 and two weeks to wait for the permit. PA is Shall Issue, so unless you have some kind of felony on your record you’re good to go.

In Arizona, no nuthin’!!! As long as you’re not a felon, carry away! I still have my CCW just in case one of Sheriff Joe’s deputies pulls me over. I’m Hispanic!? 😮
