Pot-growing Veteran in shoot out in Utah

| February 1, 2012

Police engaged in a shoot out with Matthew David Stewart, a 37-year-old Army veteran in Ogden, Utah when they attempted to serve him with an arrest warrant because he was suspected of growing marijuana on his property;

Ogden police officer Jared Francom, 30, died during the shootout with a suspect during a drug raid on a home in Ogden, about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. Five other officers were injured.

Police said Matthew David Stewart, a 37-year-old Army veteran suspected of growing marijuana, ignored a knock at the door when drug task force members arrived to serve a warrant. They said he waited for them to enter his house before firing from a concealed position with a semi-automatic pistol.

When police returned fire, Stewart fled through a rear bedroom window, according to an affidavit. He hid in a backyard shed, where police say he continued firing, nearly hitting another police officer.

It was at that point that Stewart was shot and taken into custody, prosecutors said.

We know what his defense is going to be;

Stewart, a former member of the U.S. Army for four years, is charged with getting into a gunfight with members of the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force after the task force showed up at his home to serve a warrant on Jan. 4.

I suppose the Army taught him how to grow pot, too.

Yawn, of course. PTSD. Even if he was a clerk who never set foot in Iraq/Afghanistan.

So predictable.

I think we covered this one a few weeks ago, and this one is the guy who served in Germany in the mid-90’s.

Christ, that must have been so horrible, having to deal with all that stress, all those beers…

I like Terminal Lance’s take on the subject of a person’s former military status making headlines all the time, even when it’s not necessarily complimentary to the story at hand.

Could’ve just been “Pot growing man in shootout in Utah” But we HAVE to know he was a veteran.

Yup–earlier story on the guy. Amazing.

#3 Former 3c0…Yep! love me some Terminal Lance too. 14 mos. as a Lance…fortunately not terminal. His toons same today as yesterday (67-72).

@GruntSgt
I’m about as far as one can get from any Lance (terminal or otherwise), while staying in the military (debatable). I’m in the USAF and quite the “desk jockey”… but damn I love Max’s sense of humor. I’m the first person in my squadron to own his Knife Hands!

Doc Bailey

Being a veteran doesn’t protect you from being a dumb ass.

The real question is instead of firing on cops, if he was so desperate, why did he not blow up his head? Coward. If he wanted to grow pot, just move to Mexico.

There is alittle more to this story.The ogden police have a bit of a coverup going on.Not exactly sure what went on but it seems the cops shot each other.These particular cops have been in some questionable shootings before.Anyway it was the media saying he had ptsd,not the guy charged.

Sergeant Spliff

What a disgrace. Guy serves his country honorably and then gets killed by the so-called law over some cannabis. If they hadn’t been wasting their time hassling this guy, and concentrated on going after some real criminals, this could have all been avoided.

OWB

Could have been avoided if they had all stayed home that day, too.

Or, if he hadn’t done anything illegal in the first place.

Don’t expect sympathy here for violating the law. Smoke dope if ya wanna, but don’t whine when the consequences of it catch up with you.

Former3Co is on to something: much of the headlines, when negative, has to mention a perp’s veteran and PTSD status.

Past practice for Reuters and AP (the main sources of traditional news), and of Journolist was to coordinate stories and reporting policies in support of a specific political agenda. Since the DHS was revealed trying to criminalize vets returning from OEF/OIF, I wouldn’t be surprised if all this emphasis on veterans’ status and PTSD hasn’t been coordinated with DHS.

Shorter: same people, some now in government, carrying out the same mission.

UpNorth

Spliff, you really need to concentrate on comprehension. Where in the article did it say that the guy got killed “by the so-called law over some cannabis”. He’s been charged, most dead people don’t get charged with anything. Have another toke.
And, the most serious charge is, for now, shooting at the cops who showed up at his house to halt his farming efforts.
You do make a good advertisement for everything that’s good about weed, though.

NHSparky

Actually, Spliff–the fact that the above pictured shitbag ISN’T currently at room temperature speaks volumes about the restraint of the police in this case.

That and shitty aim.

Dirty Al the Infidel

If I didn’t miss something,the Cops actually knocked first? If so this could give more ammo for No Knock Warrants.
