Lies, damn lies…well, just lies

No shock that much the media is biased , but this week we have great examples to look at. The Atlantic is leading the way with this little gem about Trump offering to pay for Vanessa Guillen’s (young soldier beaten to death a Ft. Hood) funeral, and exploding at the reported bill:

In the meeting, Trump maintained a dignified posture and expressed sympathy to Guillén’s mother. “I saw what happened to your daughter Vanessa, who was a spectacular person, and respected and loved by everybody, including in the military,” Trump said. Later in the conversation, he made a promise: “If I can help you out with the funeral, I’ll help—I’ll help you with that,” he said. “I’ll help you out. Financially, I’ll help you.”

According to attendees, and to contemporaneous notes of the meeting taken by a participant, an aide answered: Yes, we received a bill; the funeral cost $60,000.

Trump became angry. “It doesn’t cost 60,000 bucks to bury a fucking Mexican!” He turned to his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and issued an order: “Don’t pay it!” Later that day, he was still agitated. “Can you believe it?” he said, according to a witness. “Fucking people, trying to rip me off.”  The Atlantic

Whoa…strong language, and a VERY bad look for a Presidential nominee. I did a quick search for “murdered Mexican funeral Trump” and see virtually every MSM carrying the story virtually verbatim. The Atlantic article goes on to allege Trump continually disparages the military (well, he has stepped in THAT cow patty more than once – he is VERY quotable when you take his remarks out of context) .They bring up every allegation pretty much ever, including of course that Trump had a medical deferment that kept him from being drafted. Funny, they don’t mention the slavering hero-worship of Joe Biden, who had exactly the same number and type of deferments, riding out Vietnam in his Corvette. Presumably with that life-threatening asthma Joe alleges (which never prevented him from playing intramural sports or being a LIFEGUARD) Joe needed the motorized assistance?  The Atlantic

What most of the articles omit, and the Atlantic buries ‘way down in the article, is denials from people who were IN THE ROOM.

In statements shared with The Independent, members of the Trump campaign and former staff members vehemently denied that such exchanges took place. “President Donald Trump never said that. This is an outrageous lie from The Atlantic two weeks before the election,” said Trump campaign adviser Alex Pfeiffer.

Kash Patel, former Pentagon Chief of Staff, who was reportedly in the room at the time of the alleged comments said: “Of course, President Trump didn’t say that. President Trump ensured that this victim received full military honors.”

“In addition, President Trump was able to have the Department of Defense designate her death as occurring ‘in the line of duty,’ which gave her full military honors and provided her family access to benefits, services, and complete financial assistance.”  The Independent

And from the Guillen family?

In addition, following the publication of the claims in The Atlantic, Mayra Guillen, sister of Vanessa Guillen, blasted the outlet for “exploiting my sister’s death for politics,” describing the piece as “hurtful and disrespectful.”

“President Donald Trump did nothing but show respect to my family & Vanessa. In fact, I voted for President Trump today,” she wrote on X.  The Independent

It’s interesting that this morning the breakfast talk was about Harris is doing particularly poorly among Hispanic voters and young black males. Although I am sure the Atlantic article is pure coincidence, eh?

Happenstance? Coincidence? Like we don’t already know that the mainstream media is a DNC whorehouse!

Odie

As someone said yesterday, there are no coincidences in politics. There is no coincidences in most media reports now days either.

I remember seeing a video montage where it started with 1 newscaster reporting a story, then 2, then 4, 8 etc etc reporting the same story verbatim. Many voices reporting the same story, as was written and handed to them to read.

News reporters… Lol. Well paid news readers.

For the record, that’s Sinclair Broadcast Group — providing conservative material to all of its broadcasters, covering 40% of the local TV market in the US. It’s a damning indictment of media independence for sure.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinclair_Broadcast_Group

Odie

I saw ABC and CBS logos on a few of the news clips in the video I watched. Are you saying those are conservative media outlets? Who knew as I certainly didn’t.

Does that mean Sinclair broadcast group only owns ABC and CBS partially or wholly, or is ABC and CBS just grabbing news off the wire and reporting it without checking sources?

5JC

No, no, yes.

Sinclair owns the local TV stations, the network (CBS, FOX, etc) owns the content. Sinclair has their own network too. Absolutely grabbing stuff off the wire or wherever and just reading it. Original TV reporting, other than being on the scene or local news is a thing of the past. No local news anchor is going to give you their spin on what the new US Legislation means to you or why Joe Biden is trying to order ice cream from a tree.

Don’t forget also that “conservative” is open to a lot of interpretation and is a sliding scale from say Mitt Romney to Rand Paul to Dan Bishop.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

There are six corporations these days owning about 90% of all media, that the same messaging conservative or liberal or whatever is filtered through the same lens of corporate corruption is hardly surprising…what’s cheap and easy and beneficial to corporate America is what is broadcast regardless of what party politics are on display…

Anyone thinking today’s news outlets are anything but corporate hack mouthpieces has not been paying attention.

5JC

The Latin/ Hispanic vote has them in a panic. The normal method of passing out borrowed money and weed to ensure a vote doesn’t work so well on immigrants because, well they were motivated to change their lives and came here. If they wanted to sit around on their ass and smoke weed all day they could have stayed right where they were.

A Proud Infidel®™

I was listening to talk radio during a lengthy assignment at work today, and a couple of Talk Show Hosts were revealing that AND that the Black Male Vote is NOT turning out for the D-rats as they want and have taken for granted, that and Kamala’s mud-slinging marathon is very largely being seen as a big panic spree.

Graybeard

That is an insult to whores.

The mainstream media are the DNC’s willing sluts.

Odie

Gotta get those couple of drops kamala left behind.

BennSue

I remember a time when the news merely reported events and let you decide what side was “right”. I also remember when reporters or anchors were just that and not opinionated or personalities. They kept their politics out of the news reporting, but the 2000 election was the breaking point and it’s all gone downhill since.

thebesig

The media abandoned journalistic integrity well before 2000. Remember when legitimate sexual assault claims against Bill Clinton didn’t get much air time as the BS ones against Donald Trump? This was during the 1992 elections. The economy also started to pull out of the recession that year, but the media didn’t hype that fact, even ignored it.

I remembered how CNN and others only showed Bob Dole as a stiff older man “out of touch”, meeting small crowds in contrast to Bill Clinton being portrayed as approachable and likeable, with large crowds. It wasn’t until Bob Dole conceded that the media portrayed Bob Dole the way they portrayed Bill Clinton.

Bernard Goldberg wrote a book on the media bias he witnessed as an insider for one of these news networks.

These are just but a few examples, like their double standards when it comes to reporting economic numbers and the economy. But CNN’s coverage in the 1990s was the beginning of the end for me when it came to relying on these folks for the news. I’ve been following the news since the summer of 1982. Today’s media has become like the Soviet Pravda that we mocked in the 1980s, and the Wag the Dog movie.

Bias-by-Bernard-Goldberg
Veritas Omnia Vincit

I’m a little older than you and I believe we have a good 60 years of watching the news drift further and further away from the role of what, where, who, and when event reporters to become more of “let us tell you why” 24 hour news entertainment cycle devoid of whatever integrity might have existed prior to that moment.

thebesig

It had been drifting from its intent well before 60 years ago. I remember seeing a video where Richard Nixon complained about how the media didn’t properly report his side of the story during one of the campaigns he lost in the early 60s.

Even Benjamin Franklin criticized the tendency of the press to deviate from proper journalism.

In the book, Reagan’s War, the author talked about how Ronald Reagan dealt with communist sympathizers in Hollywood and understood that these communists were already attempting to influence entertainment, media, and other aspects of society (towards being more biased in favor of communist thought) by the middle of the 20th Century.

BennSue

Oh I agree it started long before, just after 2000 it became very apparent that “journalists” gave up any sense of pretending to be neutral.

Fyrfighter

I wish I could say that.. I wasn’t born yet (though my father was in country) when Cronkite gave his extremely biased reports on the Tet Offensive… So they’ve been telling us what to think since AT LEAST that far back..

That is as it is. The sheeple on the left will do like they are told, like good little nazis. And their side actually bears a very significant resemblance to that crew. It is the so called independent voters that must pay attention to what is said versus what is real, and in this case, it actually is very clear who is the good one and who is the evil one.

I don’t want to give MSM the clicks, and by now it’s buried in the controversy, but what initially happened to the soldier?

5JC

She was murdered by a gropey boss after she filed a complaint about him. The guy and his girlfriend beat her to death and dismembered the body and hid it in several places. They got caught and the supervisor committed suicide. Girlfriend got 30 years in the federal pen.

This led to a law that requires the military to have an outside investigator for sexual harassment complaints instead of whatever poor bastard got pinned with handling complaints because the whole thing was mismanaged and contributed to her murder.

It was horrific and should never have happened to a soldier and still pisses me off. They never did find all the pieces.

WHAT! That’s the October Surprise? Regurgitating old lies and bullshit talking points? How very 2016 of them…
Trump is Hitler…BORING! Some woman breaks decades of silence to accuse of Republican…how very Cavanaugh of them. Speaking Christine Blassie-Ford, she corroborates Camel-a working at McDonald’s even though she doesn’t know where or when…but she can describe the dinning room. As Dems are prone to do, she doesn’t remember when it happened “…occurred in the late winter or early spring of 1993…”. Nice six month window, not! Oh, and she was dating Jeffery Epstein, supposedly. He can’t confirm ‘cuz he got Killaried.

As for gen Kelly, he’s full of shit! If he ACTUALLY felt that way, then why didn’t he resign? He got canned almost 6 years ago, but 2-weeks before the election he’s crying like a little girl with a skinned that Big Bad Donny fired his ass, and he waited six years to say he was a fascist? Fuck you general. The ‘sucker & losers’ is another such lie because if he actually said that, you should have resigned on the spot. Since you didn’t, we know that’s another lie too.

Same old bullshit that absolutely did NOT move the needle. How about Doug Emhoff smacking some girl at Cannes which was corroborate by 3 witnesses? Anybody in the Corporate Industrial Complex Operation Mockingbird Assets going to follow up on that? Oh, I see. Its (D)ifferent when you do it…

Fyrfighter

Doug Emhoff.. he’s an indian just like Elizabeth “Lieawatha” Warren, though from a different tribe.. in his case, he’s from the Smack-A-Ho tribe..

So, we’re not doing the “without evidence” thing anymore?

A Proud Infidel®™

JUST WHAT CAN any “Kamalite” voting for her say about her past accomplishments that is positive? NOPE, all she and her side can do is throw every bit of shit they can at the wall to see what sticks.

Deckie

It’s either “well at least she isn’t Trump,” or, failing that, they just toss a word salad back at ya — Kamala style… 😏

LC

She was a good enough AG that just over ten years ago, she got a bunch of donations to her successful campaigns, including by someone named… oh,.. Donald J Trump.

Maybe, just maybe, she’s not completely terrible?

SFC D

Yes. She is completely terrible. Kindly list your reasons for supporting her. You can start with a list of her successful accomplishments. Not as VP. In her entire life.

Odie

I asked LC the same question yesterday (?) on another thread. He replied he was busy, and would get back on the weekend open thread. I’ve also noticed since he is so busy, he has managed to make time to reply a couple times on subjects not related to support for kamala.

A head scratcher for sure. Not on our part, but apparently on his part trying to come up with something, anything.

LC

Not exactly a head-scratcher — a full reply of why I prefer Harris over Trump takes a wee bit more than a single link, like I’m about to drop now to SFC D, or a quick comment about the video above.

Odie

Here is a Trump accomplishment that I put at the very top of my list for supporting him.

He started no new wars. Zero. He inherited one, but didn’t start one. Some here were not as fortunate as I to serve during a time of relative peace., 79-83.

I for one don’t need links for your support of Harris, or your disapproval of Trump. I was just asking what she has done to make you like her.

LC

I don’t love Harris, but she’s done a number of things I like. For just one, .. how is this a bad thing? While she was AG, she greatly reduced the backlog of DNA testing in CA:

https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-kamala-d-harris-announces-end-backlog-slowed-dna-analysis

Is that completely terrible too? Come on, surely you can say she did some good things, even if you don’t like her. I give Trump credit for the Operation Warp Speed stuff.

SFC D

No, I cannot say she did some good things. Don’t mistake me for a MAGA flag waving Trump fanboy. I am not. There are many things I do not like about Trump, but I do like the results he got and the prosperity he fostered. Kamala has worked the system her entire life, playing whichever race card suited the situation. Manipulated her way into law school through a program intended for disadvantaged minorities. I don’t need to mention her relationship with Willie Brown. Cackled her way through nearly 4 years as a member of the Biden-Harris administration, where she was touted as an equal partner in running the nation while actively hiding Joe’s dementia. She’s now distanced herself from Biden, promising change without disclosing an actual platform. You’re Ok with the way she became the nominee? Your vote will support democrat chicanery. Every time I hear her call Trump a threat to democracy, I wonder if she understands just what a left-wing puppet she really is. She’s a prop, a stand-in, even more so than Biden.

5JC

Means nada to me. Maybe she helped somebody, somehow by doing her job that she is supposed to be doing a little bit better than the last guy as AG, but given all of her failures I’m going to go ahead and say one attagirl doesn’t make up for dozens of ohshits.

But other than that one time maybe she did a good job what was so special about her that Joe Biden picked her to be breakglassincaseofemergencyguy? As Joe Biden put it she was a minority female, so there is that. I’m not saying her jayjay didn’t get her jobs before but I don’t agree that should be how the president gets things done. Besides she is sixty and let’s face it, lots of makeup isn’t going to cover all that up and few minutes alone with Putin won’t convince him to withdraw… From the Ukraine.

Odie

Didn’t she also, as AG of California, hold people past their release dates?

Here’s a list of some of her other accomplishments.

https://laist.com/news/politics/what-9-cases-from-kamala-harris-past-say-about-her-record-as-a-california-prosecutor

rgr769

Oh really, did she conduct the tests? Or just take credit for whoever ran the lab speeding up the process.

Fyrfighter

Well, according to Willie Brown, she’s pretty damn good on her knees… other than that??? Yeah, I got nothing..

Forest Bondurant

For starters, here’s a list of her “accomplishments”:

She prosecuted the parents of children who were habitually truant, referring to children allowed to miss school as “tantamount to a crime”, and her policy received scrutiny because it disproportionately targeted low-income people of color. The law heaped blame on parents with circumstances outside their control.

Prosecutors obtained personnel files from the Archdiocese of San Francisco which dealt with sexual abuse cases going back decades. She refused to investigate or prosecute any cases.

In 2004, San Francisco Police Officer Isaac Espinoza was shot and killed by David Hill and wounded another using an AK-47. As DA, Harris announced her office would not seek the death penalty. In opposition, Senator Diane Feinstein said she would not have endorsed Harris as DA knowing she was against the death penalty.

A 2009 legal review concluded that the work of her San Francisco DA’s office that felony convictions for cases that went to trial and reached a jury verdict – a comparatively small group that nevertheless included some of a DA’s most violent and emotionally charged cases – declined significantly over 2 years, finding that prosecutors won a lower percentage of felony jury trials than their counterparts at DA’s offices covering 10 of the largest cities in the state. Her 71% conviction rate of felony cases was boosted by a significant increase in pre-trial agreements.

In 2010, a crime lab technician was caught stealing cocaine and mishandling evidence, and had been convicted for domestic violence in 2008. A judge ruled her office had to disclose that information to defense attorneys, resulting in more than 600 drug-related cases being dismissed.

Forest Bondurant

Also in 2010, she opposed state initiatives to legalize marijuana, but during a California Democratic Convention in 2015, she called for an end to the federal ban on medical marijuana but withheld the term legislation. In 2018, she co-signed Cory Booker’s Marijuana Justice Act, which proposes to legalize marijuana at the federal level.

From 2011 to 2016, more than 1,500 people were incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses. Despite her “hard-line” stance, she has adopted a pro-legalization position. During a talk radio interview in 2019, she gloated about smoking marijuana herself when it became politically expedient to do so. The stark contrast between her actions and her public statements demonstrates a troubling inconsistency that calls into question her authenticity and reliability to make policy or enforce it.

For nearly 90 years, California state laws prohibited images of handguns from being used at gun stores. In 2014, her office cited several gun shops and they sued, arguing the law violated the 1st Amendment. Her office argued the law was needed to prevent gun-related crime and suicide. A federal judge concluded the law was a “highly paternalistic approach to limiting speech” and declared it “unconstitutional on its face.”

She repeatedly fought to uphold wrongful convictions that had been secured through official misconduct that included evidence tampering, false testimony, and suppression of crucial information by prosecutors.

She allowed people to be sentenced knowing the marijuana tests they were subject to were giving false positives, and she never disclosed that fact to defense attorneys.

Forest Bondurant

The prosecution of Daniel Larsen – sentenced to 28 years under California’s 3-Strike Law – was ordered to be released after serving 13 years, but he remains incarcerated. During his trial, his attorney (now disbarred) did not call a single witness, including up to 9 who could testify they saw someone else (including a former police chief who said he saw another man toss the knife). The officers involved were not credible, and a federal judge overturned the case in 2009 ruling his Constitutional rights had been violated. Harris refused to officially exonerate him nor rescinded the state’s objection to his release from prison, claiming Larsen did not prove he was innocent quickly enough – a technicality that could keep him in prison longer.

When running her presidential campaign in 2019 against Joe Biden, she said she believed the numerous women who claimed to be victims of unwanted touching by him, but then she joined Biden’s ticket after accusing him of sexual misconduct. Her sudden shift from being a fierce critic to running mate indicates she is willing to compromise her principles. This move also proves she is opportunistic, undermining her credibility and raises doubts about her commitment to issues she claims to believe in.

Forest Bondurant

While Senator, she failed to embrace criminal justice reforms, either opposing them or declining to state an opinion. For example, in 2015 she opposed a bill that required her office to investigate officer-involved shootings. She continued to prosecute death penalty cases as the state AG while opposing capital punishment.

As DA in San Francisco, her “Back on Track” anti-recidivism program that she expanded while AG was criticized because the program was training illegal immigrants for jobs they could not legally hold.

She defended the murder conviction of Johnny Baca, in which judges found a prosecutor lied during the trial and relented after a video of an oral argument received national attention.

While serving as a District Attorney, she fought against new DNA testing for death-row inmate Kevin Cooper, who claims he was framed for murder. Legal experts believe test results would exonerate him.

She advocated for civil asset forfeiture, which would have allowed prosecutors to seize assets before initiating criminal proceedings. Only the federal government has this authority.

Her prosecutors defended the conviction of George Gage, who was charged in 1999 for abusing his stepdaughter. A judge later found that her prosecutor failed to turn over exculpatory evidence – including that the stepdaughter had repeatedly lied to law enforcement and that her mother described her as “a pathological liar.”

Forest Bondurant

As the state Attorney General, her office crafted the “Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act”, which lessened the penalties for a variety of crimes – including making theft of items with a total value of less than $950 a misdemeanor. By doing so, the law handed thieves carte blanche to raid retail outlets with near impunity. The law made communities less safe. Other crimes that were once felonies, including forgery, fraud, drug use, and receipt of stolen goods under $950 were also reclassified as misdemeanors.

She fought to keep a cash bail system in place that impacted poor people.

As California attorney general, Harris appealed a judge’s decision to remove the Orange County district attorney’s office from a death penalty trial after evidence emerged that the sheriff’s department had been operating an unconstitutional jailhouse snitch program. The program tainted more than a dozen criminal cases, several of them murder trials.

Forest Bondurant

During her tenure as a prosecutor, African Americans were hit hardest because their incarceration rate was 5 times their share of California’s population (African Americans make up 6 percent of California’s population but make up 29% of the inmate population. In California and several other states, racial disparities in imprisonment have intensified resentments of what many see as deeply ingrained discrimination in the country’s criminal justice system.

In 2011, the Supreme Court demanded California to reduce its prison population by 33,000 inmates in 2 years. Three years later, federal judges ordered that all nonviolent second-strike offenders be eligible for parole after serving half their sentences. Most of the prisoners were working as janitors, groundskeepers, and kitchen staff. Her attorneys argued in court that releasing those prisoners would drastically reduce their prison labor pool.

In 2019, she voiced her public support to decriminalize sex work.

During her first speech on the Senate floor, she said “An undocumented immigrant is not a criminal…” avowing her belief that illegal immigration is “a civil violation, not a crime.”

She is ranked most politically left compared to Senate Democrats; has written the fewest laws and has held the fewest committee positions compared to Senate Sophomores; the 2d most absent in votes compared to all Senators (missing 55% of votes) during the 116th session of congress.
