Democratic presidential hopeful, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., center, gets a loose ball as Kory Mckay, left, watches during a ‘3-on-3 Challenge for Change’ basketball game at Maple Crest Elementary School in Kokomo, Ind., Friday, April 25, 2008. Obama is wearing a U.S. Marine corp T-shirt, given to him by an agent in his security detail.

Reader Ray reminded me of this today. I saw it on Fox and Friends this morning and of course the USMC thing jumped right out at me. The picture caption said the shirt was loaned to him by the Secret Service detail, but still…. He wasn’t wearing a T-shirt under his suit? Why the USMC shirt? Everyone knows that Obama doesn’t do something without thinking it through. He started wearing a flag pin recently for his phony patriotism and now he wants to be a phony Marine.

Reader Ray wrote;

Am I the only Veteran irritated by BHO using a USMC shirt for a photo op? It seems to me that the only candidate who has any right to wear a BTDT shirt is McCain. I am a firm believer in the “if you didn’t earn it, don’t wear it” school of thought.

No, Ray you’re not the only veteran irritated by this, as I’m sure other readers will join you in their dissatisfaction.

He can wear it as there are no regs against it. Only you can’t say you earned it unless you DID.I earned mine in 1964 at Parris Island.
Any Marine that earned one will know the truth.

However, I remember a day when we’d beat a recruit down for wearing an Airborne T-shirt, or a Ranger T-shirt, or even an Infantry T-shirt before they graduated AIT. Heck, I was scared to buy jump boots before I graduated from jump school for fear some 5-jump-chump would beat me on my way back to the barracks with the new boots under my arm.

My point, though, is that Obama does nothing that’s not without meaning. I’m sure we’re going to see this picture again in the coming months.

Looks like he doesn’t want the military vote!! Think the Secret Service Agent is pulling his chain a little???

Black man playing basketball. Aint it racist to publish that?

Rurik

Hey.

Let’s send him on KP. The grease traps, maybe? Then we can think of some other details to satisfy his craving for military stature. Ray is right – didn’t earn it, don’t wear it.

Kate

There might not be any rules preventing him from wearing it, but even though I’m not a Marine, even I’m a bit put off by him wearing it.

“Black man playing basketball. Aint it racist to publish that?”

Foog me … dats funny. Tis possible we have moved (or are moving) past color in the campaign? And getting down to brass tacks …. the measure of the men and women who are running for office (and how small the yarsdstick be, needed to size up a couple of them).

The Brits call it Bad Form.

Kg Maj USMCR (Ret)

Didn’t go there, didn’t do that, still got the t-shirt.

Disrespectful…

Semper Fi to all the real Marines!

First we define ourselves by our actions and by our associations; not by what we say! For Senator Obama to wear the symbol, i.e., “USMC” without “earning” the right is a disgrace to himself and an insult to those of us that paid the price to be called a United States Marine. Semper Fi Mac

Bill C "Former USMC"

Our actions and associations define us not what we say about ourselves. For Obama to wear a T-Shirt with “USMC” on it implies he was a Marine, when the naked truth is he was not! I believe there is a law against “Stolen Valor”, which this blatant act may not qualify to be procuited under, but in all reality it doesn’t fall to short from the mark. No one has the right to wear any symbol that implies he is or was a Marine except a Marine!
Semper Fi Brother’s

Ray

First,I’d like to make it clear to all my Marine Brothers and Sisters that I was NOT a Marine. I was in the US Navy, and for years have razzed my Marine friends that “the only good Marine is a Submarine”. That is the right of one fellow members of the military to gently jibe each other and does not detract from the deep respect I hold the Marine Corps in. (I assure you they gave as well as they got.)

No, the point is, I wouldn’t ever wear a USMC shirt because I wasn’t one. That does not mean that I have a problem with someone’s Dad, Mom, Girlfriend, Wife, (or Boyfriend, Husband) and kids wearing a shirt that shows their respect for their family member even if they’re not in the service themselves. That’s showing respect and love for someone.

But when you’re running for POTUS, image is everything and Obama knew damn well that he was in a photo op and that shirt is subliminaly suggesting that he has a connection to one of the finest group of Americans I know, when none exist. How many people will look at that picture and seriously think he was a Marine? That corks me off.

John

So Obama is at a high school, and is invited to a pickup game of basketball. He needs to take off his suit, and asks if he can borrow a T shirt. One of his security guys says here – wear this one. And you want to make an issue of this? You guys need to get a life!

Jonn wrote: You might have a point…except that I wrote this nearly 5 months ago and it hasn’t been mentioned since. If that’s the only thing you have to say, and the other 1999 posts on this blog don’t piss you off, then you’d better get a life (and another witty retort). You’re the one who Googled “Obama wearing USMC shirt” apparently looking for a fight.

Proud Marine Dad

The shirt he was given “just happened to be a USMC t-shirt?” Oh, I guess it’s an accident there’s a female in the picture too? 🙂

Chelsea

Geez all of you are so negative! He is SUPPORTING the Marines! These are just biased comments because you probably support McPAIN. And no I was not searching “Obama wearing USMC shirt”, I was looking for pictures of him playing basketball with troops. Emphasize on playing basketball with troops!

Gary Jacobsen

He is the commander-in-chief. He can wear whatever military shirt he wants. Incidentally, the shirt he is wearing is available for $5.95 to ANYONE who shops at a Marine Corps Exchange.
