Have a pleasant flight ASA style

| March 2, 2024

You can run out of lift, run out of fuel, run out of altitude, run out of airspeed, and they are all bad. Natural problems like storms or even volcano eruptions  are problematic (you try turning 8,000 rpm while inhaling sand!)  People problems like annnoying passengers, entitled idiots, sickness, or skyjackings to some third world shithole can occur (and I suspect that last will come back when ID-less Pre-check spreads (Business Insider).

Normally your pilots can at least talk to the ground and know where they are…mostly.

GPS disturbances have been recorded almost every day this year in the Arctic Circle region where Norway and Finland border Russia, Dagens Næringsliv reported, citing the Norwegian Communication Authority.

The Barents Observer said that incidents of GPS jamming nearly doubled after Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with 122 recorded in that year and 294 in 2023.

The disturbances come as Russia deploys electronic warfare units to fend off Ukrainian drone attacks on its cities, airports, and oil and gas industry in the far north of the country.

Electronic warfare units are able to scramble the coordinates used to guide drones to their targets, the reports said, and are affecting GPS coordinates across the whole region.

According to reports in Russia, the signals are so strong Russia is turning off the internet in some regions to prevent interference.

“We depend on good GPS signals to quickly locate areas with people missing in extreme weather like we have today,” Deputy Chief of Police Trond Eirik Nilsen with Finnmark Police District said to the publication.

Some security officials believe that the interferences are part of deliberate tactics by Russia to intimidate NATO countries.  Business Insider

‘Way back when an acronym called MIJI was drummed into EW folks’ heads. There is a lot of overlap in effects and causes. May want to remember this.

Meaconing is taking over or broadcasting altered nav signals to throw the enemy’s location or navigation off. Intrusion is throwing a false signal into the enemy’s comms, like sending fake commands on their radio net. Jamming is sending overriding or deceptive signals to directly screw up comms – which is a lot of what Russia is doing. Interference is inducing spurious noise in their electronics or comms.

That Russia is pulling such potentially lethal games with NATO allies should tell you something…essentially about the only international convention they haven’t broken in the last three years is actually launching a nuke. Would be nice if someone in Washington was paying attention – to this.

We know the drill with Officer Barbrady in the WH: move along, there’s nothing to see here.

Make sure you know how to use a map and compass, folks.

Might want to put some Tube Rose Snuff cans and a ball of string in your ruck also so you can have some comms.

Good thing that The Bad Orange Man wasn’t (s)elected for another term. We’d shorely be involved in a war in Europe AND the ME by now. Oh…wait

Yeah that guy was a straight up fascist.

He tried to establish a Ministry of Truth to control the media. Then he was going to weaponize the DOJ and sick it on his political enemies all while hiding his corruption behind a web of lies. Then he was going to over ride the Budget Control Act of 2011 and increase defense spending by even more than it was then a few years ago when the US was engaged in two active wars.

We really dodged a bullet there.

Yup, that fascist SOB was worse than that founder of the Fascist Party in Italy. I remember those speeches he gave in that black uniform from the balcony of his palace.

Your right Anonymous, Maps, compasses and sextants worked great in the air, land and at sea before GPS and Loran.

The Russians have not broken any treaties. They simply has withdrawn from them as allowed by the treaty they signed. There are consequences of the west and NATO weaponizing the financial systems and fighting their proxy war. The Russians also have their own GPS satellites.

We keep going down the Pefo Joe rabbit hole. It will end badly.

“essentially about the only international convention they haven’t broken in the last three years is actually launching a nuke.”

This isn’t true. Russia violated the Russia – Ukraine Friendship treaty starting in 2014 after the puppet government of Viktor Yanukovych was tossed out.

In 2019 the Trump Administration accused Russia of Violating the Open Skies Treaty for a number of violations stretching back to 2008. The US and then subsequently Russia withdrew from the treaty.

Depending upon which day of the week it is Russia will claim that older treaties don’t apply to the “new” modern state or that Crimea and Donbass belong to Russia because they were once a part of Russia long before the modern state existed.

They want to drink their vodka and have it too.

“Tossed out” = violent coup of a democratically elected government.

Do you ever think before you comment?

5JC

No I never think up lies, I just post facts and not things that aren’t true. There was no coup. Protests became violent because Yanukovych began killing protestors. He also refused to follow the law and was removed legally from office.

The Courts in the Ukraine extra-constitutionally nullified amendments in 2010 that were made in 2004 to limit executive power. This was a naked attempt by the puppet government to expand executive power. In 2014 the parliament reinstated the amendments and the Russian puppet government refused to honor them. Therefore, it could be argued that the government was operating extra-constitutionally and therefore illegally. A number of the security forces either resigned or joined the protestors. If you think that is a coup you must think that J6 was “scary revolutions, oh nooooooo”.

On 22 February 2014 the Parliament impeached and unanimously voted to remove Yanukovych from office. A lot of the charges were related to the murders of more than a hundred protestors, many of whom died in custody. He and several members of his cabinet fled the country, but they were LEGALLY REMOVED FROM OFFICE IAW THE CONSTITUTION. The Constitution was restored and democratic elections were held later that year.

A parliament impeachment isn’t a coup. It’s a function of the constitution and function of the government to prevent someone from unlawfully seizing power.

Ok, by your illogical reasoning…

Russia is just tossing out the Ukrainian Nazis from the Donbas.

And they even had a vote on it. Just like Kosovo.

ITS ALL LEGAL. AND CONSTITUTIONAL.

See, I can all cap too.

Oh, you don’t think Russia using the same rules is fair?

5JC

Clearly not your best thinking.

Russia has no legal right to interfere with the constitutional self determination of Ukrainians. They’re trying to impose their will through violations of the United Nations charter, yet another agreement that they violated.

Purely a guess, But you may be allowing your dislike of the US participation in the war muddle your thinking. I am sympathetic to that dislike. However, don’t fool yourself about what’s actually happening.

Like we tossed out the minions of King George III?

Bones

Russia, the UK, Ukraine and US agreed in 1994 in Budapest to guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine in exchange for the Uki’s giving up the nuclear arsenal.

The agreement, a memorandum appended to the Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty, was signed by Yeltsin, John Major, Kuchma and Slick Willie.

Russia broke that agreement in 2014, and again in 2022.

That was before the massive oil reserves were discovered. After that it may as well have been written on toilet paper.

The left’ response? They’ll go back to blaming Donald Trump.

It’s strange that a country takes steps to protect itself. RF should follow our example of; unregulated and illegal importation of peoplebombs, allowing incursions of spy balloons, election interference by state and corporate actors, unequal metering of justice based on superficiality, showing how tolerant they are by butchering their youths’ minds with woke bullshite, reduction in military prowess, etc.

I’m not saying they’re good, just pointing out RF’s inclination towards self-preservation, which is admirable if you’re being honest.

I’ve been wondering when, not if, the GPS system would be taken down. All the electronic gizmos we depend on in the military are at risk. Smart bombs and guided shells become stupid munitions in those cases. Had we needed to do dead reckoning navigation in the sand box, Stormin Norman’s “Hail Mary” would not have worked nearly as well as it did.

Even with real roads, as in Germany, I have seen a few screwups because some NCO or ossifer couldn’t use a map & compass. More importantly, I also missed a meal or two because some SP4 truck driver couldn’t read a map either. But, since wars are always fought in locations with street signs and clearly identifiable terrain features, not to worry mate.

“Where are you?”
“I am at grid 12345678”
“So am I— Where are you?”

“But, since wars are always fought in locations with street signs and clearly identifiable terrain features, not to worry mate.“

Doesn’t work in Germany. 30% of the streets are named “EinbahnStrasse”.

Like Peach Tree street in Atlanta?

Is the Army Security Agency (ASA) not a thing anymore?

Nope. Lightning fast chicken f””””ers gone since 1976.

Sounds like there may be a market for jammer-seeking drones.

Maybe call them “shrike”.
